A four-year-old phone can feel slow for different reasons, so age alone isn’t a diagnosis. In my case, a Nothing Phone 1 had a worn battery, demanding apps and a storage cleanup overdue. I replaced the battery, changed how I use a few apps and adjusted some settings. Those are choices that helped with my own phone—not a guaranteed fix for every Android model.

First, work out what is actually aging

Before spending money or changing settings, check three things on your specific model: battery symptoms, available storage and software-update status. A phone that drains quickly may have a battery problem; lag that appears during particular tasks may be tied to apps or workload. Android software-aging research also finds that responsiveness can vary with workload, Android version and manufacturer customization, so the phone’s age by itself doesn’t identify the cause.

  • Battery: Note whether runtime has become poor or the phone shuts down unexpectedly. Use the manufacturer’s diagnostic tools or support guidance where available.
  • Storage: Review how much space is occupied and look for large files or forgotten downloads you no longer need.
  • Updates: Check whether the exact model still receives Android and security updates, and whether an update is available.
  • Apps: Notice whether slowdowns are associated with particular apps or tasks rather than assuming every part of the phone is failing.

The advice below draws on my experience with a Nothing Phone 1. Its settings and repair options won’t necessarily match another phone.

Why I replaced the battery

My Nothing Phone 1’s original battery was below 75% health, struggled to last a day and seemed to contribute to performance throttling. I had it replaced at an officially licensed service center. That is my account, not a universal battery-health threshold or a diagnosis anyone can apply to another model.

Batteries naturally lose capacity over time. For Galaxy phones, Samsung describes short runtime and unexpected shutdowns as common signs of battery aging and recommends checking with Samsung Members diagnostics or a service center when appropriate. Menus, warranty coverage and payment conditions can vary.

Google’s replacement guidance is specifically for Pixel devices: it recommends replacement below 80% remaining capacity or at model-dependent cycle counts—800 cycles for Pixel 3 through Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel Fold, and 1,000 cycles for Pixel 8a and later. Those recommendations are not a cutoff for Nothing, Samsung or other brands. See Google’s Pixel battery guidance and check the support information for your own model.

If a battery is swollen, don’t press the cover back into place or try to open or repair the phone yourself. Google’s Pixel support directs owners to repair options or local recycling guidance; follow the appropriate safety guidance for your device.

Which changes helped me day to day

Use apps that suit the phone

I reviewed battery usage, switched some heavier apps for alternatives and used web versions of some social sites. I chose AntennaPod for podcasts and replaced the default launcher with Before Launcher. Those were my preferences; whether an app uses fewer resources depends on its version, settings, workload and the phone.

Trade some visual smoothness for a simpler feel

I set animation scales to 0.5x and lowered the display refresh rate from 120Hz to 60Hz. Animations felt quicker to me, and the lower refresh rate traded some smoothness for the experience I wanted. I also limited maximum charge to 80–90%. These settings and their names vary by device, and limiting a charge can mean starting the day with less available runtime.

Adjust charging and the case to your preferences

I switched from a fast charger to an 18W charging brick and replaced a heavy-duty case with a thinner one. Those were personal choices, not requirements for preserving a battery or improving performance. Check your phone maker’s charging guidance before treating a particular charger or case as necessary.

Clear files you no longer need

I deleted large files and old downloads. That gave me a straightforward way to reduce clutter, but there is no universal free-space percentage in the available guidance that guarantees a speed improvement.

Adding a memory card is not a general speed fix. Android’s documentation says only apps that declare support can be placed on adopted storage, and the system benchmarks that media against internal storage and warns if it is significantly slower. A card also needs to stay in a stable location to reduce data-loss or corruption risk; Android specifically advises against adopting USB devices as internal storage on phones or tablets. Check that your exact phone has a suitable card slot and supports the intended use before considering expansion. See the Android documentation on adopted storage.

Private DNS was a personal choice

I use AdGuard DNS through Android’s Private DNS setting because it blocks unwanted ads for me. That is my experience, not a guarantee of ad blocking or suitability for every user, network or device.

Check software support, not just speed

My Nothing Phone 1 had recently reached the end of its software-update support. An unsupported phone may still work, but update status matters independently of how fast it feels: updates can include security patches, bug fixes, stability and performance improvements, and compatibility benefits. Android says that not updating may increase security risk and can contribute to slower performance or app-compatibility problems; that is a stated risk, not a diagnosis of my phone.

To check, open Settings > System > Software update on devices where those labels apply. The path varies by manufacturer, and update eligibility and timing depend on the manufacturer and sometimes the carrier. Android’s update guidance, published 2026-02-05, explains why updates matter; use your phone maker’s support page to confirm the support schedule for your exact model and region.

Should you repair, keep or replace the phone?

There isn’t a universal break-even price for an older phone. Compare the condition of the battery, the cost and availability of a repair for your exact model, remaining security support, compatibility with essential apps and whether everyday performance is still adequate.

Option When it may fit What to check
Repair A battery symptom is the main problem and a suitable repair is available. Exact-model compatibility, service route, quoted price and any warranty conditions. Repair prices are not established here.
Keep using it Performance meets your needs and essential apps remain compatible. Update status, battery behavior and whether the phone still handles your routine reliably.
Replace it Support, app compatibility, repair availability or overall performance no longer meets your needs. Verify the new model’s update promise and local availability with its manufacturer; support can depend on model and region.

I may eventually replace my phone with one that has longer update support. Some devices are advertised with support of up to seven years, but verify the current promise for the specific model rather than assuming every phone receives the same duration.

What I’m not doing: flashing a custom ROM

I haven’t installed a custom ROM. It might be an option for some owners, but it can involve trade-offs: I’m concerned about losing current optimizations or access to apps and features I rely on, including banking apps, Google Wallet and Nothing Glyph features. Those outcomes are not guaranteed for every device or ROM. Before considering one, check compatibility for the exact model and the apps and features you need.
