musikcube is a free, cross-platform terminal audio player and local music-library manager with a streaming server built in. You can use it to index and play music stored on your computer, or serve that collection to compatible clients on your network. A Raspberry Pi or custom DAC is optional—not a requirement for using the desktop player.
What musikcube does
The project describes musikcube as a C++ audio engine, library, player, and server. Its underlying musikcore library handles file scanning and tag indexing, alongside playback features such as gapless playback, crossfading, queue management, playlists, and plugins. The project website says it supports libraries of 250,000+ audio tracks; this is musikcube’s own capability claim, not an independently measured benchmark. Local playback and library management
The core use case is playing and organizing an existing local music collection, including from a terminal-based interface. The server function is part of the software, so musikcube can also make library content available to remote clients; it is not a separate streaming-catalog subscription service.
Desktop installation options
The project describes support for Windows, macOS, and Linux and provides installation instructions and precompiled binaries for major platforms. The official installation guide documents platform-specific steps and package-manager routes, but it was last edited April 20, 2023. Check the current release and your operating system’s package availability before relying on a particular filename or installation command.

How the built-in streaming server works
According to the repository documentation, the server is enabled by default. Its WebSocket service uses port 7905 for metadata retrieval, while its HTTP service uses port 7906 to deliver audio, optionally transcoded. The remote API documentation describes WebSocket traffic for real-time control and metadata paired with HTTP audio streaming. That wiki page was last edited December 28, 2018, so confirm behavior in the version you install before building a detailed client integration around it.
The same API documentation describes a source-audio mode that sends files as-is, without transformation or downsampling. Treat that as documented behavior rather than a guarantee for every current release or client configuration.

Keep server access on your local network by default
The project warns that the server and remote API, as shipped, should not be assumed safe for public-internet exposure. WebSocket authentication uses a simple password challenge, audio HTTP uses Basic authorization, TLS is not provided, and the password is stored in plaintext in a local settings file. The repository notes that a reverse proxy can provide TLS termination, but still urges caution about exposing the service online. Read the repository’s security guidance before configuring access beyond your home network.
For ordinary home use, keep access limited to your local network rather than forwarding the server ports from your router to the internet. A reverse proxy can address TLS termination, but it does not by itself establish that every authentication or exposure risk is resolved.

These are examples, not required components or a current compatibility guarantee. External storage may suit some large collections, but the project material cited here does not establish a recommended capacity or device.

- People considering a dedicated Raspberry Pi stereo or server setup who are comfortable checking hardware compatibility themselves.
It is a less straightforward fit if you want a hosted subscription catalog, a turnkey public streaming service, or a server that can safely be exposed to the internet without additional security configuration.
