Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo reduce live workload, render a visual loop before streaming and play it in OBS, or route a real-time visualizer into OBS when you need audio-reactive visuals. Pre-rendering moves visual generation out of the live moment, but it cannot guarantee zero encoding lag: performance depends on your computer, encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity.
For hands-on VJ mixing and offline clip rendering, Resolume offers documented OBS routing and rendering options. Synesthesia is an option for real-time audio-reactive scenes with output-routing setup. If you only need a repeatable visual layer, an exported video played as an OBS media source is the simpler workflow.
Compare the main visualizer workflows
| Option | Best fit | Workflow | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| Resolume Arena or Avenue | Hands-on VJ mixing, loop creation, and performance | Route live output to OBS using NDI, or Syphon on Mac. Its Clip Renderer can render supported clips offline. | Requires media preparation or live routing. Clip Renderer cannot render live inputs such as capture devices or NDI streams. |
| Synesthesia | Real-time audio-reactive visuals and shader-based scenes | Route or capture its live output through integrations such as Syphon, Spout, or NDI. | Output capture and routing add setup steps; the research does not establish independent performance benchmarks. |
| Pre-rendered video in OBS | A repeatable visual layer with less live visual generation | Add the exported file as an OBS Media Source and enable Loop. OBS’s VLC Video Source can loop a playlist if VLC is installed. | A fixed clip is less spontaneous or reactive unless you prepare multiple clips and transitions. |
How to play a visualizer loop in OBS
- Create or render a visual clip before going live. In Resolume, Clip Renderer works offline for supported clips and renders at the clip’s length. It does not render live capture-device or NDI inputs, and some transport or FFT features are unsupported.
- In OBS, add the rendered file as a Media Source and turn on its Loop option. To loop a playlist, use VLC Video Source with VLC installed.
- Check the loop’s start and end at the frame rate and music tempo you intend to use. If the timing does not line up, adjust the clip or music workflow rather than assuming every loop duration will be an exact match.
- Test the entire intended OBS scene before streaming, including the visualizer, overlays, browser sources, and any recording. Watch OBS performance indicators and reduce one workload at a time if frames are missed.
How to route live visuals into OBS
When the visuals need to react live, run the visualizer during the stream and send its output to OBS. Resolume documents NDI routing and Syphon output for Mac; in that Mac workflow, Resolume says Syphon has less latency than NDI. Synesthesia also describes live output and Syphon, Spout, and NDI integrations, with capture paths for macOS and Windows. These are product-specific routing descriptions, not a universal latency guarantee.
- Choose a supported output route for your visualizer and operating system, such as NDI or Syphon where applicable.
- Add or capture that output in OBS and build the rest of your scene.
- Run the complete scene at your target resolution and frame rate, then check performance before going live. A routing method alone does not prove that the computer can encode the scene smoothly.
Choose export codecs for the playback application
There is no single best codec for every use. Match the file to the application that will play it. Resolume recommends DXV for playback in Resolume because its player can decompress frames on the GPU. For clips rendered for other software, Resolume lists MotionJPEG or ProRes. In a 10-bit Resolume workflow where smooth gradients show banding, the vendor recommends ProRes 422; it describes DXV as 8-bit and faster for playback. These are application-specific recommendations, not advice to encode every stream in DXV or ProRes.

- Vekkia Sheet Music Stand Panel Connection Screw
OBS’s guide identifies H.264 as broadly compatible and its default video codec. Check the streaming platform’s current ingest requirements before changing outgoing encoder settings. For local recording, OBS documents MKV as resilient to interruptions, while MP4 and MOV require finalization and an interrupted direct recording may be unrecoverable. OBS also notes software AV1 encoding requires a high-end CPU for real-time compression.
Keep audio and visuals in sync
A rendered visual loop and a separate music source may not repeat on exactly matching boundaries. Frame rate and tempo can make an exact loop impossible at a chosen duration. Resolume’s example: at 25 FPS, a one-bar audio-video loop for 90 BPM cannot be represented as an exact whole-frame duration; the closest 66-frame duration corresponds to about 90.9 BPM.

Consider separating audio and video rather than forcing the music length to fit the video frame count. Test the transition point at the intended frame rate and tempo. If the visuals must follow changing music in real time, use a live visualizer instead of relying on a fixed rendered loop.
Diagnose encoding lag instead of assuming a visualizer is the cause
OBS says performance requirements vary with encoder, resolution, FPS, and scene complexity, and that a compatible system is not necessarily capable of streaming or recording adequately. Start with OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard, then test the actual scene and settings you plan to use. Pre-rendering can remove live visual generation from the workload, but OBS still has to composite and encode the stream.

Does pre-rendering a visualizer eliminate encoding lag?
No. It moves visual generation out of the live moment, but OBS still composites and encodes the scene. Actual performance depends on your encoder, resolution, frame rate, computer, and scene complexity.
Which codec should I use for Resolume loops?
For playback in Resolume, its documentation recommends DXV. For clips going into other software, Resolume lists MotionJPEG or ProRes. Choose based on the playback application and workflow rather than treating one codec as universal.

Do I need a capture card for music visualizations?
No, not for generated visuals. A capture card is for bringing an external camera or HDMI/SDI source into compatible software; it is not a general encoding-performance solution.
What should I check if OBS drops frames?
Test the full scene at the intended resolution and frame rate, including overlays, browser sources, visualizer, and recording. Use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, monitor performance indicators, and reduce one workload at a time.
