When one teammate has to copy questions into an AI chat, bring the answer back to everyone, and explain what was said in between, the conversation becomes a relay. Multiplayer AI puts people and AI participants in a shared thread so they can work from the same conversational context. That can support brainstorming, questions, summaries, and coordination—but a shared chat is an interaction pattern, not proof of better team performance.

What does “multiplayer AI” mean?

Multiplayer AI is AI that participates in a conversation shared by multiple people, or a coordinated conversation in which multiple AI agents can take part. The central idea is shared context: participants can refer to the same discussion rather than relying on one person to carry information between separate chats. Microsoft Research describes the broader direction as AI participating in group activity and supporting shared context and collective reasoning, while noting that evaluating AI interventions in real-time group settings remains an open research challenge. Microsoft Research: Collab AI

“Group chat” can describe different setups. It does not automatically mean that several AI agents are present.

  • People and one assistant: Several people share a thread with a single AI assistant.
  • One person and multiple agents: Several AI agents contribute to a conversation, usually under some form of orchestration.
  • People and multiple agents: Human participants and more than one agent share a conversation or workflow.

Can several people use the same AI chat?

Yes, in products that offer shared conversations. For example, OpenAI announced ChatGPT group chats on November 13, 2025. The announcement described group chats as separate from private conversations and said a person’s ChatGPT memory is not shared with other people in a group chat. At launch, the feature began as a pilot in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan; OpenAI later announced an expansion to logged-in users on Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans. These are dated rollout details, not a guarantee of availability in every region or plan today. Check OpenAI’s current feature information before relying on access. OpenAI: Group chats in ChatGPT

A shared thread can give a team a common record of prompts, responses, decisions, and follow-up questions. For example, teammates might use it to ask an assistant about a shared task or request a summary of the discussion. Whether that saves time or improves decisions depends on the work, the participants, and how the tool is configured; the cited sources do not establish a quantified productivity gain.

How do you add an AI agent to a group chat?

The steps depend on the product and on the permissions granted to the agent. Microsoft’s Teams support guidance describes adding agents or bots from a group chat, reviewing what each does and what permissions it needs, and then asking it questions about the chat or requesting summaries. Exact labels and availability can change, so use the current Teams interface and your organization’s guidance. Microsoft Support: Add an agent to a group chat in Microsoft Teams

Conversation Cards for Coworkers & Managers - Build Trust & Improve Performance by Asking the Right Questions - Team Building Games for Work, 1:1 Meetings, Retros | Say This Not That Cards for Leaders
  • Built for managers who run the meetings: Every workplace conversation has its moment. 150 questions across 3 color-coded categories help you match the right tone to the right room — the icebreaker before a team standup, the prompt that opens a real 1:1, and the question that makes hiring panels and onboarding actually land.
  • Work-safe and appropriate for every HR policy: All 150 prompts are curated specifically for the workplace. Think of it as a "say this, not that" guide for team conversations — no awkward dating questions, no prying personal topics, no tricky power-dynamic moments. Whether you're managing peers, managing reports, or just trying to break the ice with a new coworker, every question is one you can comfortably ask — zero prep required.
  • Pick the category, set the tone, and lead the room: Yellow for icebreakers (office lunches, meeting warmups, virtual happy hours). Green for 1:1s and growth (career check-ins, performance prep, retros). Brown for alignment (onboarding, kickoffs, culture-fit interviews).
  • Enough variety and durability for years of use: 150 distinct prompts keep weekly 1:1s, quarterly retros, sprint planning sessions, and onboarding rounds from going stale. Each 2.5 x 3.5 inch matte-laminated card is built for repeated handling, so the deck holds up as long as the conversations do.
  • Designed by people who've actually managed teams: Built for HR pros, scrum masters, first-time managers, and people leaders who'd rather invest in their team than buy another team-building gimmick. Every question is one we'd ask our own teams. Not party trust falls. Not generic icebreakers. Just the kind of workplace conversations that build trust, surface real feedback, get stuck conversations unstuck, and help teams actually connect.

For Teams agents, being installed in a chat does not by itself mean an agent receives every message. Microsoft Learn says the default is for an agent to receive messages when it is directly mentioned. Resource-specific consent can allow an agent to receive all messages in conversations where it has been installed. Treat these as distinct access settings, and confirm what the agent can receive before using it with sensitive or confidential discussion. Microsoft Learn: Channel and group conversations for agents

Can multiple agents collaborate in one conversation?

Yes. In a multi-agent design, an orchestrator can select which agent speaks next and direct the conversation. Microsoft Agent Framework documents several speaker-selection strategies:

Strategy How it works When it may fit
Round-robin Agents take turns according to a fixed sequence. A predictable turn order is useful.
Prompt-based A prompt helps select the next speaker. The next agent should depend on the conversation or task.
Custom Application-defined logic chooses the next speaker. The workflow needs rules tailored to its context.

These are orchestration options, not evidence that one approach produces better results. A team should be able to tell which agent is speaking, why it entered the conversation, and how the system decides what happens next. Microsoft Learn: Group chat orchestration in Agent Framework

How do you stop an AI bot from interrupting a team chat?

Make the agent’s role and speaking conditions explicit. An agent that responds to every message can add noise even when its answers are relevant; one that speaks only when asked may be easier to manage but less proactive. In Teams, direct mention is the documented default for agents in group chats and channels, while broader access requires resource-specific consent. For an orchestrated multi-agent chat, the speaker-selection strategy governs which agent contributes next.

In practice, agree on what the agent is for, when it should respond, and what kinds of requests belong in the chat. If people cannot distinguish an agent’s contribution from a person’s, or cannot tell whether it is answering a mention or monitoring messages, the interaction needs clearer cues or tighter controls.

What should you compare before choosing a group-chat approach?

Use these questions to assess a product or design against the team’s actual workflow:

  • Who shares the thread? Is it several people and one assistant, one person and several agents, or a mixture?
  • When does the AI speak? Only after a direct mention, in response to every message, or when an orchestrator selects it?
  • How are agent speakers selected? Does the system use a fixed turn order, prompt-based selection, or custom logic?
  • What context can each agent access? Check membership, installation, and permissions. Do not assume an agent can see private messages or organizational content without the required access.
  • How much noise does it create? Does it answer the shared task concisely, and can people tell when it is acting?
  • Who controls availability and setup? Distinguish a feature available to an individual user from organization-controlled configuration, policy, and consent.

Product features, plan eligibility, regional rollout, and administrative controls can change. Check current vendor documentation and your organization’s policies before deploying an agent in a work conversation.
