To set up multiple cameras for a live stream, route each camera into either streaming software such as OBS or a hardware video switcher, then send the resulting program feed to your encoder. Choose the route based on your cameras’ outputs, how many feeds you need at once, and whether you prefer software controls or a physical switching panel. Before going live, test the whole path—including audio and monitoring—from camera to platform.
Choose how to switch between cameras
Software switching with OBS
Connect each camera to the computer as a video source. Depending on the camera, that may mean a direct webcam connection or a capture device that brings the camera’s video into the computer. In OBS, create scenes for individual shots and layouts, then add each camera feed as a source. Scenes can hold multiple sources, so you can build a full-frame camera shot, picture-in-picture view, or another composition.
OBS Studio Mode displays the current live scene beside an editable scene. That lets an operator prepare a camera or layout and then switch it live when ready. Check that the computer has enough compatible capture connections and can handle the number of active feeds and the production settings you plan to use; numeric computer requirements are not established here. See the OBS Studio overview and OBS sources guide.
Hardware switching
Connect cameras to a video switcher, select the shot on the switcher, and send its program output to the computer or encoder. This keeps camera selection on dedicated physical controls and can consolidate several feeds into one output. Confirm the switcher’s input connector type and count match your cameras; features such as multiview monitoring vary by model.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Blackmagic Design’s setup guides describe ATEM Mini models with four or eight HDMI inputs, depending on model, and USB output for use as a webcam in streaming software. The guides say Pro and Extreme models include multiview. ATEM SDI models similarly offer four or eight SDI inputs depending on model; Pro and Extreme models include multiview, with USB webcam output described in the guide. The ATEM Television Studio guide describes eight SDI sources, and says HD8 and HD8 ISO models include multiview. These are model-specific details: verify the exact product specifications before buying. Read the ATEM Mini setup guide, ATEM SDI setup guide, and ATEM Television Studio guide.
Match the equipment to the production
| Decision | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Camera output and connection | Whether each camera outputs HDMI or SDI, and whether the switcher or capture device accepts that signal | Connectors and signal paths must be compatible. |
| Number of feeds | How many cameras need to be connected at the same time | Hardware input counts vary by model; software workflows need enough capture connections. |
| Switching method | OBS scenes and controls, or dedicated switcher controls | The operator’s workflow determines how shots are prepared and changed. |
| Monitoring | Whether you need multiview, preview of individual inputs, or a separate monitor arrangement | You need to identify the next shot. Do not assume every switcher includes multiview. |
| Program output | How the switched feed reaches streaming software or an encoder—for example, a USB webcam output or capture-device connection | This is the link between the camera production and the stream. |
| Audio | Which microphone or mixer supplies program audio, how levels will be monitored, and whether audio stays in sync | Camera cuts should not interrupt or degrade the main audio. |
| Camera consistency | Framing, focus, exposure, and color across angles | Consistent shots make cuts less distracting. |
Set up the multi-camera stream
- Plan camera positions and shots. Choose a wide or master view and useful close-ups or alternate angles. Position cameras so they do not block one another, and aim for reasonably consistent framing and lighting.
- Choose where switching happens. For an OBS workflow, plan how each feed will reach the computer, directly or through capture devices. For a switcher workflow, connect cameras to compatible HDMI or SDI inputs and route the switcher’s program output to the streaming computer or encoder.
- Build and label scenes or inputs. In OBS, create named scenes and add the relevant camera sources. On a hardware switcher, label inputs and arrange monitoring so the operator can identify each feed. OBS’s overview explains its scene-and-source workflow; Blackmagic’s ATEM SDI guide describes switching and multiview on selected models.
- Choose one deliberate audio path. Decide which microphone or mixer provides the program audio, then check that it remains clear when switching cameras. The sources cited here do not establish a preferred microphone or detailed synchronization procedure, so verify your own audio chain in rehearsal.
- Configure the destination encoder. For an encoder-based YouTube stream, enter the YouTube Live server URL and stream key in the encoder. YouTube describes encoder streaming as using software or a hardware encoder with audio and video equipment connected to it. Follow the current instructions in YouTube Help: Stream using an encoder.
- Rehearse the complete signal path. Check every camera input, framing, focus, exposure, audio, transitions, overlays, monitoring, and stream destination in a private or test session before the public event. Confirm that the intended camera changes appear in the program feed and that audio continues cleanly through them.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
- A camera does not appear in OBS: Check that the camera or capture device is connected, selected as the intended video source, and supported by the computer’s available input. Confirm the source is added to the scene you are previewing.
- A camera will not connect to the switcher: Verify that the camera output and switcher input use compatible connectors and signals. Check the exact model’s input specifications rather than relying on the product family name.
- The operator cannot tell which shot is next: Label OBS scenes or switcher inputs clearly. Check whether the switcher model includes multiview; if not, plan a suitable separate monitoring arrangement.
- The stream shows the wrong feed or layout: Check the selected OBS scene or switcher program output, then verify that the program output—not merely a preview—is what reaches the encoder.
- The stream has no audio or audio changes unexpectedly: Check the selected microphone or mixer path and monitor levels while changing cameras. The program audio should have a deliberate source rather than depending on whichever camera happens to be live.
- YouTube does not receive the encoder feed: Recheck the YouTube Live server URL and stream key entered in the encoder, following YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
Or let it run in the cloud
A multi-camera production still needs cameras, switching, and an encoder to create its live program. StreamNeo is a separate option for keeping an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube; it does not switch camera feeds or go live from a camera. Upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free day.
