If you mean a microcontroller that can work without you writing firmware, the closest documented example is InPlay’s NanoBeacon IN100—but only for a specific beacon task. It still needs configuration, suitable hardware and power, and sometimes sensor or microcontroller integration.
Are programming-free microcontrollers real?
Some chips can perform a narrowly defined job without requiring you to write firmware for that job. InPlay’s NanoBeacon IN100 is an example: after you configure it with the company’s NanoBeacon Config PC GUI, it can automatically transmit Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) or proprietary-format advertising packets.
That is different from a general-purpose microcontroller that can be told to perform arbitrary new tasks without code. The IN100 is designed for beacon tags and low-power wireless sensors, not unrestricted application firmware. “Programming-free” describes a bounded workflow, not a chip that needs no setup or engineering.
What does the InPlay NanoBeacon IN100 do without firmware coding?
Configure a beacon, then let it transmit
InPlay’s IN100 datasheet says, “There’s no need to do any Bluetooth-related software programming to use this device.” In the documented workflow, you configure the beacon mode and payload using the vendor’s PC GUI; the chip then handles the advertising transmissions.

Choose fixed or dynamic payload data
The IN100 can send predefined payload data stored in non-volatile memory. It can also acquire dynamic data from sensors or an external microcontroller. Dynamic data therefore still depends on the relevant sensor or MCU being connected and integrated; the no-Bluetooth-firmware claim does not mean every sensor arrangement works automatically.
Account for the chip’s stated hardware limits
InPlay’s datasheet, whose publication year is not stated in the available copy, lists a package as small as 2.5 mm × 2.5 mm, operation down to 1.1 V, and sleep current below 650 nA. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements. A complete design must also account for its power source, antenna and board implementation; the figures alone do not establish the power use or performance of a finished product.

Only the IN100 removes Bluetooth firmware coding for the specific beacon workflow described above. PICAXE makes programming approachable but still requires BASIC. XOD reduces hand-written coding through a visual layer, and µPanel avoids programming the mobile app itself; neither makes the microcontroller universally code-free.
What do you still need to build a working device?
- A defined task: The IN100’s documented no-Bluetooth-code use is beacon advertising, not a general replacement for a programmable MCU.
- Configuration: You still set the beacon mode and payload using the vendor’s configuration GUI.
- Hardware and power: The chip must be incorporated into a suitable circuit and supplied with power. Its datasheet specifications are not guarantees for a finished design.
- Data connections, if needed: Sensor readings or data from an external MCU require the corresponding components and integration.
Which option should you choose?
- Choose the IN100 if your defined requirement is a configured BLE or proprietary-format advertising beacon and you want to avoid Bluetooth firmware coding.
- Choose PICAXE-20M2 if your goal is to learn programming or control a small project and you are willing to write BASIC.
- Consider XOD if you want to build visual logic for a supported MCU board, while accepting that the tool generates code behind the scenes.
- Consider µPanel if you want a configured mobile interface for existing electronics and your MCU can communicate with it over USART.
These options solve different problems: a fixed-function beacon, a beginner-programmable controller, a visual development layer and a mobile-interface approach are not interchangeable. Current stock, physical availability and pricing are not established here.
