mSpy works with both iPhone and Android, but the two platforms are set up differently and do not offer the same documented experience. On Android, the route mSpy describes requires physical access to the child’s phone so the software can be installed on it. On iPhone, the route it describes is iCloud Sync, which uses the child’s iCloud username and password and a verification code shown on the device. That route may still need brief physical access to turn on iCloud backup. Whether mSpy fits a family depends less on the headline feature list than on three things: which platform the phone runs, whether you can meet that platform’s setup requirements, and whether you have the authority to monitor that particular device.

On price, mSpy’s pricing article (updated August 24, 2026) lists $48.99 for one month, with lower monthly equivalents on longer terms. Those are published prices, not a guaranteed checkout total. Confirm the amount you will be billed, the renewal terms, and the price in your region before paying.

What this review is based on

This article draws on mSpy’s own published materials: its Compatibility Policy (last updated September 8, 2025), its FAQ (accessed October 7, 2026), its pricing article (updated August 24, 2026), and a Help Center article dated August 23, 2024. It also draws on TechRadar’s mSpy parental control review, published in September 2026, and on a historical research paper hosted by the Federal Trade Commission. We did not install mSpy, and nothing here reports battery, accuracy, or reliability testing. Where a claim comes from mSpy or from TechRadar, the text says so.

What mSpy says it does

mSpy describes itself as parental monitoring software. According to its FAQ, the service gathers information such as location, text messages, and call details from the target device and makes it available in an online account dashboard. It is a subscription service. What you can see depends on the platform, the setup path, and the plan you buy, and mSpy’s materials do not promise that every listed capability works on every phone.

Android and iPhone at a glance

Factor Android iPhone
Setup route Installation on the target device, as described in mSpy’s Compatibility Policy iCloud Sync, using the target’s iCloud username and password
Physical access Required for the stated Android route May be needed briefly to enable iCloud backup and to obtain the verification code (FAQ)
Minimum OS Android 5 or higher (Compatibility Policy) Not stated in the Compatibility Policy
Data update interval Can be set between 5 and 30 minutes (FAQ) Stated as every 24 hours (FAQ)
Account-owner notice Not stated in the sources reviewed The account owner receives an email when a new device syncs (Compatibility Policy)
Feature list Detailed list in mSpy’s compatibility materials No equivalent per-feature list in the sources reviewed
Reported limits Some permissions differ on customized builds; full feature access can require root (Compatibility Policy; TechRadar) TechRadar reports iPhone limitations and setup friction; the review does not list every affected feature

Does mSpy work on Android?

Yes, on the terms in mSpy’s Compatibility Policy. The policy describes an Android route that requires installation on the target device and Android 5 or higher. Customized Android builds can differ, because the policy warns that permission steps may vary and that compatibility does not guarantee every subscription feature will run correctly.

Setup requirements and friction

  • Device in hand: installation requires the child’s phone, as covered in the table above.
  • Permissions: the policy says the device owner or installer should grant the permissions. On customized Android systems, the steps may differ from the standard path.
  • Google Play Protect: TechRadar’s September 2026 review says Android setup may involve disabling Google Play Protect.
  • Root: TechRadar says full feature access can require root. Rooting is a separate decision with its own security trade-offs, and the sources reviewed do not describe the process.
  • Removal of traces: the Compatibility Policy says mSpy’s instructions include removing traces of the app. The legal section below explains why this matters before you install.

Features mSpy lists for Android

mSpy’s compatibility materials list chats across selected messaging applications, location, geofencing, calls, texts, emails, browsing history, site blocking, alerts, and calendar activity. Its FAQ adds plan-dependent claims covering app activity and other phone data. These are mSpy’s own claims. Do not assume any of them works on your child’s model or operating system version, because the Compatibility Policy says features may fail or contain bugs.

The FAQ says Android data updates can be set between 5 and 30 minutes. mSpy’s homepage advertises updates “as often as every 5 minutes.” Read that figure as an Android setting that the FAQ supports, not as a promise for every platform. TechRadar’s review describes Android as mSpy’s stronger platform. That is the reviewer’s characterization, not an independent measurement.

Does mSpy work on iPhone?

The iPhone route in mSpy’s Compatibility Policy and FAQ is iCloud Sync. It does not use the Android installation path, and the sources reviewed do not describe installing software directly on the iPhone.

How iCloud Sync is set up

  1. Turn on iCloud backup on the child’s iPhone. The FAQ says physical access may be needed briefly for this step and for obtaining the verification code.
  2. In mSpy, sign in with the target iCloud username and password.
  3. Enter the verification code that appears on the target device.
  4. Expect an email to the account owner saying a new device has synced. Whoever owns that iCloud account receives it, which matters if the account belongs to your child.

Do not describe this route as requiring no access to the device. You need the credentials and the verification code, and the sources reviewed do not explain what happens if iCloud backup is later turned off.

What to check before relying on iPhone monitoring

  • Feature coverage: the sources reviewed give no per-feature iPhone list comparable to the Android list. Check the features you need against mSpy’s current iPhone documentation before paying.
  • Limitations: TechRadar reports iPhone limitations and setup friction. It also says some features require rooting or jailbreaking but does not list which features those are.
  • Dependence on iCloud: the route depends on the child’s Apple account and backup settings staying as they were at setup.

How much does mSpy cost?

Plan term Published price Monthly equivalent What the source says
One month $48.99 $48.99 per month The one-month price in the article
Three months $27.99 per month $27.99 per month Monthly-equivalent rate; total term price not stated
Twelve months $11.66 per month $11.66 per month Monthly-equivalent rate; not evidence of a month-to-month option at that price

Is mSpy legal?

Legality depends on the jurisdiction and on who owns or has authority over the device. mSpy’s own guidance draws the line at consent. Its FAQ says: “If you want to monitor an adult person, you have to get their consent.” It also says laws differ by country.

mSpy’s Help Center article, dated August 23, 2024, lists three situations in which it says the software may be installed: on your own device, on an underage child’s device, or on another person’s device with that owner’s explicit consent and agreement. It warns that installing surveillance software without authorization is unlawful in many instances, and that notice may be required.

These are company statements, not legal advice. Whether a parent’s authority over a minor’s phone is sufficient, and whether you must notify the child, depends on where you live. Check local rules before installing anything.

Covert installation and notice

The Compatibility Policy’s instruction to remove traces of the app means a covert install is a different decision from a disclosed one. Decide before installation whether monitoring will be disclosed and whether your child will be told. The sources reviewed do not settle that question for you, and they do not say whether notice is a legal requirement in your situation.

Security and privacy evidence

The most relevant independent security evidence in the sources reviewed is a research paper hosted by the Federal Trade Commission, “No Privacy Among Spies: Assessing the Functionality and Insecurity of Consumer Android Spyware Apps,” published in 2022. It includes mSpy among the consumer Android spyware apps it studied. It is historical. It is not a current audit of mSpy’s software, its security controls, or its current app versions, so it cannot establish that mSpy is secure or insecure today.

The data mSpy describes gathering, including location, text messages, and call details, is sensitive. The sources reviewed include no current security assessment and no summary of how mSpy stores that data. This article did not review mSpy’s privacy policy. Read it directly before buying.

Who mSpy may suit, and who should look elsewhere

It may suit a family when:

  • You are the parent or guardian of a minor whose phone you own or manage, and you have the phone (Android) or the iCloud credentials (iPhone) the route needs.
  • You have checked the rules where you live and decided in advance whether the child will be told.
  • You have confirmed, for your child’s platform, the specific features you need.

Look elsewhere when:

  • The phone belongs to an adult who has not consented.
  • You need a feature you cannot confirm for that platform or model.
  • You need current, independent security evidence before handing over sensitive data.
  • You cannot meet the setup requirements, whether that means physical access, a supported Android version, or iCloud access.

What to compare with other family-safety tools

Use these axes when comparing mSpy with another authorized parental-control service. The sources reviewed do not support ranking mSpy against specific alternatives.

  • Setup and transparency: does the product require the child’s knowledge or consent, and how does it notify the person being monitored?
  • Platform parity: are the features you need documented for both iPhone and Android, if your children use both?
  • Requirements: what physical access, credentials, permissions, and operating system versions does setup need?
  • Updates and reliability: what do independent sources report, rather than marketing copy?
  • Total cost: term price, renewal, refund terms, and the cost of paid support.
  • Privacy and security: is there current, product-specific evidence?
