mpv 0.41 changed its preferred video output driver from gpu to gpu-next, the renderer based on libplacebo. If you rely on a particular output driver, set it explicitly; otherwise, the new default is intended to be selected automatically. The change is a software setting, not a requirement to buy a new graphics card or other hardware.
What changed in mpv 0.41?
The mpv 0.41.0 release notes, announced December 21, 2025, say that “The libplacebo based gpu-next is now the default, over gpu.” In practical terms, a setup that does not specify a video output driver will now use gpu-next by default.
The project’s stable 0.41 manual describes gpu-next as a video renderer based on libplacebo. It supports almost the same set of features as gpu, but “almost” matters: the documentation does not promise identical behavior or compatibility in every configuration.
Do you need to change your settings?
If you let mpv choose its renderer
Usually, no. With no explicit video output driver selected, mpv 0.41 uses gpu-next. If playback works as expected, there is no release-specific setting you need to change.

If you need to select a driver explicitly
Use --vo=gpu-next to request the new renderer, or --vo=gpu to request the older driver. For example, launch mpv with mpv --vo=gpu-next video.mkv or mpv --vo=gpu video.mkv. The manual notes that the default video output driver can change between versions, so explicitly selecting a driver is appropriate when a setup depends on one.
These command-line examples apply to launching mpv; where and how to make a selection persistent depends on how you manage your mpv configuration. The key setting is the video output driver, not a hardware upgrade.

How do gpu-next and gpu compare?

The release is a change in the preferred default, not evidence that gpu has been completely replaced. Since the manual promises similar rather than identical features, a configuration that uses particular renderer behavior should be checked rather than assumed to transfer unchanged.
What are the dependency and decoding changes?
The 0.41 release notes list minimum dependencies of FFmpeg 6.1 and libplacebo 6.338.2. These are software version requirements for builds of mpv 0.41; they do not imply that users need to purchase hardware.

The release notes also say mpv prefers Vulkan hardware decoding when available. That is a separate decoding behavior from the switch in the default video renderer. The notes do not establish that Vulkan decoding is available on every system or that a user must enable it to use gpu-next.
What to do if playback changes after upgrading
- Check whether you had selected a driver. If your launch command or configuration specifies
gpu, that explicit choice is distinct from mpv’s new default. - Test the other documented driver. Launch the same video once with
mpv --vo=gpu-next video.mkvand once withmpv --vo=gpu video.mkv. Compare the result in the configuration where you noticed the issue. - Keep the driver that works for your setup. If you need consistent behavior across versions, specify the chosen driver explicitly rather than relying on the default.
These steps distinguish a default-selection change from a problem that also occurs when a driver is selected directly. They do not establish that either driver will work better on every system.
