For an MP4 that needs to play across a wide range of devices and software, choose H.264 (AVC) video with AAC audio. An .mp4 file is a container, not a guarantee about the codecs inside it: playback also depends on the tracks’ profiles and levels, the device, and the player or browser.
What “MP4” tells you—and what it doesn’t
MP4 is a container format: it can package video and audio tracks encoded with different codecs. The filename extension alone therefore cannot tell you whether a particular player can decode the contents. A codec string can identify the codecs in those tracks and may include profile and level details. For web media, the MIME type can also include a codecs parameter. MDN’s guide to video codecs explains common web formats and their pairings; its container-format guide covers the distinction between containers and codecs.
Which codec should you use?
Choose based on the playback environment, not just the file extension or a codec’s theoretical compression advantage.
| Priority or environment | Practical choice | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Broad playback compatibility | H.264/AVC video with AAC audio in MP4 | Confirm profile, level, resolution, and support on the target devices. H.264 and HEVC are patented codecs, and licensing obligations may apply in some circumstances; commercial publishers should verify requirements for their use. |
| Smaller files for a known audience | Consider AV1 | AV1 can achieve better compression than H.264 and VP9 at the same quality, but encoding takes more computation and playback support varies. Check the audience’s devices and browsers. |
| Verified Apple-oriented or other compatible playback environment | Consider HEVC/H.265 | Support is not universal. Microsoft documents conditional HEVC support in Edge on Windows, which can depend on the required extension and a working decoder path. |
| Open-source web workflow where a different container is acceptable | Consider VP9 video with Opus audio in WebM | MDN describes WebM as a more reliable container pairing for VP9 than MP4. This choice is not an MP4 export. |
The compatibility and licensing guidance for H.264 and the WebM pairing comes from MDN. AV1’s compression and encoding trade-offs are described in MDN’s AV1 guide. For Edge’s conditional HEVC support, see Microsoft’s HEVC documentation.

Why won’t my MP4 play?
The extension may be familiar while the codecs inside are not supported by the player, operating system, browser, hardware, or driver. A file can also use a codec that is supported only at certain profiles, levels, or resolutions. For example, Microsoft notes that HEVC playback in Edge on Windows may require the HEVC Video Extension and a working decoder path. Compatibility details can change and vary by device, so test the actual target environment rather than assuming every MP4 behaves alike.
Identify the tracks first
Check the video and audio codecs, along with any available profile and level information. For a website, inspect the MIME type and its codecs parameter where applicable. This helps distinguish an unsupported video track from an unsupported audio track or a broader player issue.

Check browser and device capability
If you control a website, test the browser-and-device combinations your audience uses. The W3C Media Capabilities API can report whether a media configuration is supported and whether playback is expected to be smooth or power efficient. The specification says: “The API indicates if the configuration is supported and whether the playback is expected to be smooth and/or power efficient.” See the W3C Media Capabilities specification.

Inspect playback in Microsoft Edge
- Open
edge://media-internalsto inspect player codec and decoder information. - Open
edge://gputo review hardware-acceleration details. - If the encoding is unsupported, try converting to H.264 video with AAC audio in an MP4 container, then test playback again. Microsoft offers this as a troubleshooting recommendation, not a guarantee for every device.
See Microsoft’s Edge HEVC guidance for the support conditions and troubleshooting context.

Balance file size, quality, and playback cost
Most video codecs are lossy: encoding reduces data and can discard information, so the resulting visual quality depends on the codec and encoding configuration. A more efficient codec may reduce file size or bandwidth at a given quality, but can demand more encoding computation and may not be supported—or efficiently decoded—on the intended devices. Before exporting, weigh these factors together:
- Compatibility: Are the video and audio codecs, profiles, levels, and resolution supported by every target player?
- Output size and bandwidth: Will the file’s compression meet storage or streaming needs?
- Visual quality: Does the chosen configuration preserve acceptable detail for the content?
- Encoding time and compute: Can your workflow accommodate the codec’s encoding demands?
- Decoder efficiency: Can target devices play it smoothly and, where relevant, without excessive power use?
These trade-offs are discussed in MDN’s video codec guide and its AV1 guide.

A reliable export decision
- List the browsers, devices, and software that must play the file.
- For the broadest practical compatibility, export H.264/AVC video with AAC audio in MP4.
- Confirm the output profile, level, resolution, and audio codec against the target playback environment.
- If a smaller file is more important and the audience is known, evaluate AV1 or HEVC, then verify support and playback behavior on those devices.
- For browser-delivered media, use capability checks where available and test the actual configuration. If a file fails, inspect its codecs before re-encoding.
