Moving does not automatically mean you need a new Wi‑Fi name or password. If your router and internet service still work at the new address, you can usually keep the Wi‑Fi settings as they are. If you replace the router, using the exact same Wi‑Fi name and password can help your saved devices reconnect—but ISP connection details and other router settings are separate and may need attention.

Do you need to change your Wi‑Fi name and password when you move?

Usually, no. The Wi‑Fi name, also called the network name or SSID, and its password are settings on your router. Moving house alone does not require changing them. If you take the same router with you and the internet service is active and compatible at the new address, check the physical connection and try the network as usual.

If you replace your router, you can often give the new one the exact same SSID and password as the old one. Motorola recommends keeping the former credentials when replacing a modem/router with Wi‑Fi, and Verizon describes using existing credentials so devices can reconnect. This is a convenience, not a guarantee: devices also need compatible security settings and wireless bands.

What to do in each moving situation

Situation What to do
Same router and same ISP service; the connection works Leave the Wi‑Fi name and password unchanged. Check the router’s physical internet connection at the new home.
New router; you want saved devices to reconnect Set its SSID and password to match the old ones exactly, and use compatible security settings and bands. See Motorola’s Wi‑Fi setup guidance and Verizon’s router FAQs.
You want a new Wi‑Fi name or password Change the wireless settings in the router’s app or admin page, then update each device that used the old credentials. Menu names differ by router.
The ISP, connection type, or router arrangement has changed Ask the ISP which connection type and any login or VLAN information the service requires. Follow the router’s setup guide; if one router sits behind another, check whether Access Point mode is appropriate.

Will devices reconnect if you keep the old Wi‑Fi name and password?

Often, but not invariably. Devices that have saved the old network may join a replacement router when its SSID and password match the old ones. They may still need setup if security settings differ or a device does not support the chosen band or security mode. If you change the SSID or password, devices using the previous credentials will need the new details.

Wi‑Fi credentials, router login, and ISP details are different

  • Wi‑Fi name and password: Let phones, computers, and other devices find and join your wireless network.
  • Router administration credentials: Let you sign in to the router’s settings. They are not the Wi‑Fi password. Change factory-default admin credentials according to your router’s instructions; Microsoft’s wireless-network guidance also advises changing default router credentials.
  • ISP connection details: Depending on the service, setup may call for a connection type, PPPoE login, static IP details, or VLAN ID. These are provider-specific; ask the ISP rather than guessing. TP-Link’s router setup guide identifies provider-supplied information that may be needed.

What may not carry over to a replacement router?

Matching the Wi‑Fi name and password does not copy every setting from one router to another. Port forwarding, device reservations, parental controls, guest networks, and similar customizations may need to be recreated. Check the manufacturer’s instructions and restore only the settings your household uses; there is no universal migration process established for these items.

Set up the router at the new address

  1. Confirm service at the address. Ask your ISP whether service is active and whether the new address requires a particular connection type or provider-supplied settings.
  2. Connect the router as instructed. Use the router’s setup guide for the modem or wall connection and router mode. An Ethernet cable can be used for a wired setup connection if needed, but it is optional.
  3. Choose whether to retain the Wi‑Fi credentials. Keep them on the same router, or copy them exactly to a replacement router if device convenience is the goal. Otherwise, set the new name and password in the router app or admin page.
  4. Test the internet connection and devices. If the router is online but a device cannot join, check the entered password and compatibility of the security settings and band. If internet service is not coming online, verify the physical connection and ask the ISP about service-specific setup requirements.
  5. Restore any custom router settings you still need. Use the manufacturer’s manual for the replacement model; do not assume the old router’s configuration transferred.

When a move calls for router changes beyond Wi‑Fi

A different address or ISP can change the internet connection requirements even when you preserve the same wireless credentials. Ask the provider whether the service uses a different connection type, requires a login or VLAN information, or needs another setup step. For a router connected behind another router, check the equipment documentation to determine whether Access Point mode is suitable.
