No: moving to Amazon Bedrock is not reliably just an API endpoint change. You also need to choose a compatible API and model, confirm availability in your Region, and make IAM permissions and any organization policies match the model’s actual routing path. AWS guidance accessed October 7, 2026, recommends the bedrock-runtime endpoint for new applications.

Which Bedrock API should you use?

Start with the interaction pattern and request format your application needs. Bedrock offers several API options, but support and features are not identical across them. A familiar request shape can reduce code changes; it does not establish feature parity with your existing OpenAI or Claude integration.

API option What the AWS documentation establishes When to consider it
Responses OpenAI-compatible; stateful When an OpenAI-compatible interface and its stateful interaction pattern suit the workload
Chat Completions OpenAI-compatible; stateless When an OpenAI-compatible, stateless interaction fits
Converse A unified interface for supported message models When a common Bedrock interface across supported message models fits the application
Messages Anthropic-native request and response format When preserving an Anthropic-native format is useful

AWS recommends bedrock-runtime for new applications. Before settling on an API, check the current endpoint documentation for the exact features your application depends on, including streaming, tools, multimodal inputs, conversation state, and guardrails. The options are not interchangeable just because they can invoke a model.

Why can a model exist but still be unavailable to your request?

“Available in Bedrock” does not mean “available in every Region through every API.” Check model availability and API compatibility together. AWS’s model documentation tracks the APIs and endpoints each model supports, as well as the Regions or inference profiles through which it can be accessed. The catalog changes, so verify the current entry for your chosen model and intended Region when you implement the migration.

Also confirm access and model entitlements for your AWS account. A model’s presence in the catalog does not, on its own, prove that your account is authorized to invoke it.

How do Regions and inference profiles affect where a request runs?

The Region in your application’s endpoint or configuration is not always the whole story about processing location. A direct in-Region call stays in its chosen Region. An inference profile can route a request beyond that source Region:

  • Geographic profile: routes within a defined geography.
  • Global profile: may route to any supported commercial Region worldwide.

For the specific profile you plan to use, check the permitted destination Regions from your source Region. If a workload has residency or other location constraints, compare those source-and-destination pairs with the constraint rather than relying on a broad label such as “Europe” or “global.”

What IAM permissions and organization policies must change?

Permissions need to match the invocation path, not just the Region named by the application. For geographic cross-Region inference, AWS requires permission for the inference profile and the model in both the source Region and the profile’s destination Regions. An organization’s service control policy (SCP) can still block the request if it disallows any required destination.

Review the model, profile, source Region, every possible destination, and applicable account and organization policies together. A request can fail even when the model exists and the calling identity appears to have permission for the source Region alone.

How can you audit where cross-Region inference ran?

AWS says CloudTrail records cross-Region inference requests in the source Region and exposes the processing Region in additionalEventData.inferenceRegion. Use that field to inspect where a request was processed and to support operational or policy reviews. Confirm that your logging and review process covers the source Region where the request is recorded.

How to migrate without treating it as a base-URL swap

  1. Inventory the existing integration. Record model IDs, request and response formats, streaming behavior, tool use, conversation state, multimodal inputs, and latency expectations.
  2. Choose a Bedrock model and verify its current support. Check its compatible APIs and availability in the intended Region or through an applicable inference profile; confirm account access as well.
  3. Select the API and endpoint. For a new application, AWS recommends bedrock-runtime. Choose Responses or Chat Completions for an OpenAI-compatible workload, Converse for a suitable unified Bedrock interface, or Messages for Anthropic-native formatting. Validate required features against the selected endpoint.
  4. Set the processing boundary. Decide whether requests must stay in one Region, may route within a geography, or may route globally. Inspect the selected profile’s destinations from the source Region.
  5. Align permissions and policies. Check IAM permissions and SCPs for the model, profile, source Region, and all required destinations.
  6. Test in the target environment. Compare request semantics, streaming, tool behavior, multimodal handling, conversation state, and error handling. Then inspect CloudTrail for cross-Region processing where applicable.

There is no universal migration path that is best for every workload. The practical decision depends on API behavior, feature requirements, model availability, processing geography, policy complexity, and the workload’s pricing and throughput needs. AWS documentation accessed October 7, 2026, describes the relevant service behavior, but the model catalog, endpoint support, and profile destinations can change; verify them against the live documentation and your account configuration.
