Moving a Roomba base can change where some models begin orienting themselves and how they find the dock when a job ends. The effect depends on the robot’s navigation system: iRobot discourages frequent moves for mapped models, especially between floors, and recommends a second compatible charging station for spaces cleaned regularly.
What changes when you move the base?
For mapped Roombas, the base is more than a place to recharge. iRobot says its Imprint Smart Map robots record the base location and use it as a point of reference when beginning a mission. Their maps support systematic cleaning and help the robot return to charge or finish a job. Moving the base can therefore affect how the robot relates to its saved map and dock location.
iRobot does not say that every occasional move requires deleting a map or creating a new one. The guidance is model-specific, so do not assume that a robot will behave the same way after a move across all Roomba generations.

Imprint Smart Map models
iRobot’s Imprint guidance covers camera-based mapping models such as the i, j, and s9 series. These robots identify landmarks, build maps, and record the base location. iRobot says moving the charging station to another floor is not recommended because the base is a reference point when a mission begins. The same guide says i3, i4, and i5 models support one Smart Map. That is a model capability, not a general rule about what happens after moving a base; check the current instructions for the exact robot before relying on map behavior.
ClearView LiDAR models
iRobot says a ClearView LiDAR dock can be moved, but frequent moves are not recommended because the dock is a reference point when a mission starts. Its guidance names Roomba Mini, 100/1000, 200/2000, Plus 400, Plus 500, and Max 700 families. Product lineups and support guidance can change, so confirm your model’s current documentation. Older navigation systems
Return behavior differs among older models. Some visual-localization robots may return to a base they find during a job, or go back to their original starting location if they did not find a base. Older responsive-navigation models look for the base’s infrared signal when returning toward their start area. Check the documentation for your specific model rather than assuming it will seek a newly relocated dock. iRobot explains the differences in return behavior.

If you clean multiple floors regularly, moving one dock back and forth is generally not the arrangement iRobot recommends for mapped models. Its Imprint and ClearView LiDAR guidance both point to using an additional charging station in the other space. A second dock lets each regularly used area keep a charging location; verify that the station is compatible with your exact Roomba before buying.

For an occasional move within the same floor, the cited support guidance does not establish that the map must always be erased or rebuilt. Follow the instructions for your model and avoid treating a one-time relocation as equivalent to frequent moves between separate mapped spaces.
Set up the base correctly after moving it
Placement can affect the robot’s path and its ability to approach the dock. iRobot recommends a level surface, with the base flat against a wall. Keep the surrounding area open, and choose a location with reliable Wi-Fi coverage. An angled base can cause the robot to clean diagonally alongside the wall. - Place the base on a level surface and flat against a wall.
- Keep the approach and nearby area uncluttered.
- Confirm Wi-Fi coverage at the new location.
- For a mapped model, start jobs from the base and follow that model’s mapping instructions.
- Do not move or rotate the base during a cleaning cycle.
If the Roomba cannot return to the dock
For a docking error, iRobot’s troubleshooting guidance says to check whether the base was unplugged, moved, or rotated during the cycle, and to confirm that both the robot and base have power. Check for obstructions as well. If the problem continues, that guidance suggests trying another base location and starting the robot from the base. This is a troubleshooting step, not a recommendation to relocate the dock frequently. Follow iRobot’s docking-error troubleshooting steps.
