Long before LEGO became shorthand for interlocking bricks, toy makers were experimenting with architectural construction kits made from materials such as wood, metal, artificial brick, Galalith and rubber. A new exhibition at Vienna’s MAK traces a century of those experiments—and presents LEGO’s interlocking system as the approach that ultimately prevailed, while leaving the reasons for individual competitors’ decline unexplained.

What the MAK exhibition covers

ARCHITECTURAL CONSTRUCTION KITS 1890–1990: Plenty to Play With! is an exhibition by the Deutsches Architekturmuseum (DAM), presented at the MAK – Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna from 7 October 2026 to 14 March 2027. It draws on graphic designer Claus Krieger’s private collection of roughly 150 construction kits. The MAK describes a field shaped by experiments in materials and in ways to join pieces that were meant to stay put during play but come apart for reuse. See the MAK exhibition page.

The collection spans 1890 to 1990, but that century should not be read as one uniform product category. The museum identifies examples from different places and periods: Austria’s Ingenius kit, dated 1924 to probably 1929; France’s Les Bois de Megève, from around 1930; the Dutch Elba kit, from around 1940; and Germany’s (Thuringia) Plaspi, from around 1980. These examples show the geographical range represented, but the MAK page does not provide enough detail to infer how each specific kit was assembled or what buildings it encouraged.

What made one construction kit different from another?

A useful way to compare vintage architectural construction kits is to look at the design problem each maker was solving—not just how closely the pieces resemble modern bricks.

SnapHouse Architectural Scale Model Building Kit, Ages 13+
  • Custom Architectural Scale Models: Design and build custom Architectural Scale Models of your own unique house designs at 1:48 scale
  • Easy to Use: No special skills or additional materials are required
  • Reusable Parts: All parts are reusable so you can design, build, dismantle, and rebuild as often as you like
  • Versatile Design System: Each unique shape in the SnapHouse system can be used for multiple purposes and orientations
  • Flexible Architectural Styles: Create your own architectural style from traditional to ultra-modern and everything in between
  • Material: The exhibition describes kits using artificial brick, wood, metal, Galalith and rubber, alongside later plastic systems where documented.
  • Connection: Makers tried different ways to hold parts together securely while still allowing a model to be dismantled and reused. The MAK’s summary credits LEGO with perfecting the interlocking principle; it does not establish that this was the sole reason for LEGO’s success.
  • Building language: A kit’s components may lend themselves to walls, frames, modular forms or freer construction. Make that comparison only when the particular kit’s catalog or object record supports it.
  • Historical setting: Date, place and maker help put a kit in context. A wooden set from around 1930 and a plastic system from around 1980 belong to different design and manufacturing moments.

LEGO had an architectural chapter before its Architecture series

LEGO’s architectural ambitions predate the branded LEGO Architecture line. According to LEGO’s official history, its Scale Model line launched in the early 1960s for older children and adults interested in building. It introduced five elements, including thinner plates scaled to LEGO bricks. Larger sets 750, 751 and 752 featured architectural drawings on their packaging and included an architectural idea book. LEGO says the line did not catch on and was discontinued in the mid-1960s.

LEGO dates the start of its LEGO Architecture series to 2008, with models of the Willis Tower (then called the Sears Tower) and John Hancock Center developed with architect Adam Reed Tucker. LEGO says the sets include a booklet about the real building’s architecture and history. Tucker described his aim this way: “I wanted to tell a story, and not just sell a box of bricks.”

Where to explore the kits beyond the exhibition

Read the exhibition catalog

The MAK lists 111 Architekturbaukästen. Sammlung Claus Krieger, published by Jovis Verlag in 2025, as a German-language book with 272 pages and 500 images. It offers a substantial visual route into the collection for readers who want to examine more examples. Check the museum’s listing for current availability and price; those details can change. The MAK exhibition page includes catalog information.

Look at vintage kits as individual objects

Vintage listings can differ widely in completeness and condition. The exhibition’s broad history does not establish the safety, price, contents or compatibility of any particular kit for sale. If you are considering one, verify those details with the seller or an item-specific record rather than assuming that a set is complete, works with LEGO, or is suitable for a child.

Consider a modern architectural model system

Arckit is a contemporary option, not a vintage kit. Its US product page describes the A500 as a reusable architectural model-building set with 550 pieces, printable surface graphics, cardboard figures and landscape pieces, a pitched-roof design set, an introductory booklet, additional online designs, and digital components for SketchUp and Tinkercad. Arckit says its sets are compatible with each other. The page listed the A500 at $550 and recommended it for ages 14+ on 7 October 2026; price and product details can change. Check Arckit’s A500 product page.

Arckit founder and architect Damien Murtagh says the idea arose while he was looking for a fast, reusable, cost-effective way to make physical models as he developed a modular building concept. That is the company’s account of the product’s origin, not evidence about historical kits. Read Arckit’s account.
