If your mouse does not work in UEFI setup, connect it directly to the computer, try another USB port, and test it on another computer. If the keyboard still responds, use it to navigate while you check the manual for your exact computer or motherboard. USB and boot options differ by model, so there is no single setting that fixes every UEFI mouse problem.
Work through these checks in order
- Check the connection and power. Reseat the cable or wireless receiver and confirm the mouse is powered. If it uses batteries, check that they are installed and charged.
- Remove any hub or dock. Connect the mouse directly to the computer, then try another USB port. Lenovo recommends direct connection and trying another port for keyboard or mouse problems on its ThinkSystem ST50; these are sensible first isolation steps, not a guarantee of a UEFI fix. - Compare devices and computers. Test the mouse on another computer, and if possible try a known-working mouse on the affected computer. If the original mouse also fails on the other computer, that points toward a device problem; Microsoft’s guidance says replacement may be needed in that situation. Its checklist covers Windows 10 and Windows 11, so use it for general device isolation, not as a diagnosis of UEFI behavior. Microsoft’s mouse and keyboard troubleshooting steps
- Use keyboard navigation if it works. Firmware setup can often be navigated without a mouse. Use the keys shown on screen or described in the computer or motherboard manual, and avoid changing settings you cannot identify.
Check USB settings only against your model’s manual
Some firmware provides USB compatibility options, including settings described as USB Legacy Support, but names and behavior vary by manufacturer and product. Lenovo’s ThinkSystem ST50 documentation gives a Setup Utility path for checking that model’s USB Legacy Support setting; it is not a universal menu path. A model-specific ASUS NUC exception
ASUS documents a particular BIOS setup lockup affecting NUC7CJYSAL, NUC7CJYH, NUC7PJYH, NUC8i7HNK, and NUC8i7HVK. In the circumstances described by ASUS, a BIOS update that removed Legacy Boot can trigger the problem if Legacy Boot had previously been set. ASUS’s recovery instructions say: “Use only the keyboard. Don’t move the mouse.” The update and keyboard-only restoration of defaults apply to that listed NUC situation; do not apply them to another computer without its manufacturer’s instructions. When to contact support
If multiple mice fail on multiple ports, or setup itself becomes unresponsive, contact the computer or motherboard manufacturer with the exact model and firmware version. The checks above can help isolate whether the problem follows the mouse or stays with the computer, but they cannot identify every firmware-specific cause. No single root cause or universal setting is established for all UEFI mouse failures.
