The airline said the reasons for the flight-deck altercation were under formal investigation; Saudi investigators were reported to be working with authorities in the UAE, the United States, Oman and Israel. No scenario had been ruled out at that point.
What happened aboard flydubai flight FZ1073?
Flight FZ1073 was travelling from Dubai International Airport to Ben Gurion International Airport when an altercation occurred in the flight deck. The aircraft diverted to Tabuk Airport in northwestern Saudi Arabia. flydubai said passengers and crew were safe and accounted for.
In a statement quoted by Hindustan Times, a flydubai spokesperson said the aircraft was secured by on-duty airline crew travelling aboard, who diverted and landed it safely at Tabuk.
Contemporaneous reports described one pilot stabbing another and identified the injured captain as Indian pilot Smit Machchhar. Hindustan Times cautioned that details beyond the airline’s confirmation of an altercation had not been independently confirmed by flydubai. The Associated Press report republished by the Irish Examiner said more than 170 people were aboard; that is a reported figure, not an airline-confirmed passenger count.

What was the motive?
It was not established in the reporting published on 1 October 2026. flydubai said the reason for the altercation and the motive were unknown and subject to a formal investigation. The AP report said a regional official familiar with the inquiry described possible scenarios ranging from terrorism to mental disorders, with nothing ruled out. That was provisional information attributed to the official, not a finding by investigators.
The AP report said Saudi investigators were cooperating with authorities in the UAE, the United States, Oman and Israel. It did not report a settled conclusion about motive, background or affiliation.
What did Israeli officials claim?
Israeli political figures publicly described the incident in terrorism-related terms and raised the possibility of Iranian involvement. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said it was “too early to say” whether Iran was involved. Those statements were political claims, not confirmed investigative conclusions. They do not change flydubai’s position that the motive remained unknown.
The AP report also said four Israeli passengers would receive an Israeli “heroism” award. This was reported by AP; it does not establish a motive or resolve what happened in the flight deck.

What questions does the incident raise about cockpit security?
A Guardian analysis published on 1 October and updated on 2 October discussed the competing considerations involved in cockpit access. These are broader policy questions, not established findings about flydubai’s procedures or the circumstances of this incident.
- Preventing unauthorized entry: How should access controls protect the flight deck from someone outside it?
- Responding to an emergency inside: How should procedures account for a pilot’s incapacitation or a threat originating within the cockpit?
- Choosing an access mechanism: What balance should be struck between fixed controls and an override?
- Assessing staff over time: How should pre-employment background checks, medical assessments and psychological appraisals be complemented by continuing assessment?
International aviation-security expert Philip Baum told the Guardian that extensive background checks, medicals and psychological appraisals should be part of an ongoing process. That was Baum’s recommendation, not evidence about the airline’s screening or the suspect’s history. The British Airline Pilots’ Association, also quoted by the Guardian, urged parties to avoid premature speculation and let relevant authorities investigate without interference.
