People are using AI, but that does not mean they want an agent making decisions for them. Recent surveys show a more selective pattern: people are readier to use AI for information, work, and administrative help than to hand it authority over purchases, finances, or consequential decisions. The evidence supports a task-by-task view of trust—not a direct estimate of how many people oppose a hypothetical agent running their whole lives.

Using AI is not the same as wanting an AI agent in charge

In a February 2026 survey of 5,119 U.S. adults, 24% said they used AI chatbots daily, while 51% said they did not use them. Those figures describe chatbot use, not whether respondents would authorize an agent to act on their behalf. The survey also found that 42% used chatbots to search for information; among employed adults, 38% used them for work tasks. Only 4% said they used chatbots for companionship. Pew Research Center’s 2026 survey therefore offers evidence of practical, specific uses—not broad appetite for a life manager.

That distinction matters. Asking a chatbot for an answer leaves the user to judge and act. An agent that books appointments, spends money, or chooses a course of action takes on a different role, especially if it can proceed without approval. Adoption of the first does not establish trust in the second.

People’s willingness depends on what the AI is allowed to do

Survey results are not directly comparable: they cover different countries, dates, samples, and questions. But together they illustrate why “AI help” should not be treated as one category. Narrow assistance, choice reduction, and autonomous decision-making involve different levels of delegation.

Task or measure What respondents said Scope of evidence
To-do lists and calendars 64% were willing to let a personal AI assistant handle these tasks. YouGov survey commissioned by Zendesk; around 10,000 respondents across ten countries, fielded June 4–10, 2025.
Financial planning 39% were willing to let an assistant handle it. Same commissioned ten-country survey; the question concerns willingness, not verified use or unsupervised authority.
Shopping decisions 11% were willing to let AI make purchase decisions across lower-stakes categories. By contrast, 31% were willing to let AI narrow household-supply options and 28% personal-electronics options. Gartner survey of 322 U.S. consumers, fielded in January 2026.
Trust in carrying out tasks 32% of adults said they would not trust AI to carry out any tasks. Office for National Statistics survey of adults in Great Britain, June 3–28, 2026.
Unsupervised consequential decisions Fewer than one in ten surveyed U.S. adults would allow AI to make unsupervised final decisions in areas such as hiring, loans, college admission, parole, or medical-procedure priority. Rutgers-led National AI Opinion Monitor; online nonprobability sample of 5,154 adults, with demographic quotas and reweighting, fielded July 5–August 1, 2026.

The contrast in the shopping results is especially useful: people were more open to having AI narrow choices than to letting it make the purchase decision. Gartner VP Analyst Kate Muhl interpreted the result this way: “Consumers are not looking to outsource shopping decisions to AI. They want AI to help them find better information, compare prices, identify deals and narrow choices, while keeping final decision-making control for themselves.” That is an analyst’s interpretation of Gartner’s survey, not a direct statement from every respondent or evidence about all personal tasks. Gartner’s release describes the survey.

The Great Britain results point to similar variation by task. Respondents were most likely to trust AI for customer service and support (27%), scientific research (25%), and creative tasks (24%). Trust was lower for business decision-making (7%), caregiving (5%), and government decision-making (4%). These are reported levels of trust in specific tasks, not a single measure of acceptance of personal AI agents. The ONS survey covers Great Britain, not the UK as a whole.

Privacy, transparency, and human oversight affect acceptance

Convenience is not the only condition people weigh. In the same ten-country survey commissioned by Zendesk, 57% identified data security and privacy as factors that would increase their willingness to use personal AI assistants; 48% pointed to transparency around decisions, and 46% to human oversight or support. Because Zendesk commissioned the YouGov survey, its results should be read with that context in mind. They nevertheless show that willingness is connected to how an assistant handles information and whether a person can understand or review its actions. Zendesk’s survey announcement gives the survey details.

Privacy concerns also appear in Pew’s U.S. findings: 71% of adults thought increased AI use would make their personal information less secure, and 63% thought AI was advancing too quickly. Those are views about AI’s impact and pace, rather than direct questions about agent permissions. They help explain why a product that can act broadly may face different concerns from a tool that answers a query. Pew’s 2026 report provides the U.S. figures.

The gap between public comfort and expert enthusiasm

In Pew Research Center interviews conducted in 2024, 11% of the U.S. public said they were more excited than concerned about increased AI use in daily life, compared with 47% of surveyed AI experts. The expert sample is not representative of all AI professionals, and the question measured overall excitement versus concern—not demand for autonomous personal agents. Still, the contrast cautions against treating enthusiasm among people working with AI as a proxy for general public comfort. Pew’s public-and-expert comparison reports the findings.

What the surveys do—and do not—establish

The surveys provide evidence that people distinguish among tasks and degrees of control. They do not ask a representative population the exact question of whether it wants an agent “running their whole life.” The title’s phrasing is a forceful framing, not a verbatim survey finding, and the available figures cannot establish a precise percentage of people who reject all AI agents.

A useful way to evaluate an assistant is to ask what it can do, not simply whether it uses AI:

  • Suggest or act? A recommendation leaves the decision with the user; an agent may carry it out.
  • Reversible or consequential? Calendar organization is not equivalent to a financial, medical, employment, or civic decision.
  • Narrow choices or choose finally? Helping compare options is a smaller delegation than selecting and committing to one.
  • Can a person inspect and intervene? Privacy protections, clear explanations, and human review are conditions respondents said could affect willingness in the Zendesk-commissioned survey.

The strongest conclusion is limited but important: AI use, trust, and willingness to delegate are different things. Current survey evidence shows uneven, task-specific acceptance, with greater openness to some forms of assistance than to autonomous authority. It does not show that most people have explicitly answered a poll rejecting a whole-life agent.
