There is no audited, universal list of the most-used MCP servers. The clearest public proxy is MCP.Directory’s leaderboard, which orders projects by GitHub stars. Its leading entries include Markitdown, Firecrawl, Sequential Thinking, Knowledge Graph Memory, Filesystem, Browser Use, Context7, Playwright, Chrome DevTools and GitHub. Stars measure visibility and interest, not how many times a server is invoked each day.

Use that list as a starting point, then select a server by the job it performs, who maintains it, what it can access, how it authenticates and whether your MCP host supports its transport. The sections below map the well-known servers to practical tasks and provide a safer selection process.

What “most commonly used” actually means

MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers expose tools and resources that an AI client can call. A server may be popular because it has many stars, appears in directories, ships with a vendor product or solves a common task. Those signals are not interchangeable.

MCP.Directory’s leaderboard is the most transparent public snapshot cited for this topic, but it is a GitHub-star ranking rather than an audited usage report. There is no comparable, independently verified invocation count for each server. Treat the names below as highly visible choices, not a definitive measurement of daily use.

Visible leaders and their usual jobs

Server Typical use What it gives an AI client
Markitdown Documents and web extraction Converts supported documents and pages into model-friendly text.
Firecrawl Web extraction and crawling Fetches and structures website content for downstream analysis.
Sequential Thinking Reasoning support Provides a structured way to break a difficult task into steps.
Knowledge Graph Memory Long-lived memory Stores and retrieves relationships and facts as a graph.
Filesystem Local files Lets a client read or manipulate files within the directories you allow.
Browser Use Browser automation Allows an agent to perform browser-oriented tasks.
Context7 Documentation retrieval Supplies current library and framework documentation to a model.
Playwright Browser automation and testing Exposes browser actions and inspection through Playwright.
Chrome DevTools MCP Chrome debugging Connects an agent to Chrome inspection and developer-tool workflows.
GitHub MCP server Repositories and developer workflows Provides repository, issue, pull-request and related GitHub operations, subject to configured access.

The ordering in this table follows the commonly cited leaderboard set, not a claim that one project receives more production calls than another.

Best-known MCP servers by task

Documents and web extraction: Markitdown and Firecrawl

Choose Markitdown when the main requirement is turning documents or pages into clean text for an agent. It is a sensible first test for summarization, question answering and indexing pipelines.

Choose Firecrawl when you need web-oriented fetching or crawling rather than a single local document conversion. Check its authentication requirements, crawl limits and the domains your policy permits before connecting it to an agent that can act on the results.

Reasoning and memory: Sequential Thinking and Knowledge Graph Memory

Sequential Thinking is aimed at decomposition: the model can externalize a multi-step plan instead of trying to complete every inference in one response. It does not make an answer correct by itself; you still need validation and an appropriate model.

CanaKit Raspberry Pi 4 4GB Starter PRO Kit - 4GB RAM
  • Includes Raspberry Pi 4 4GB Model B with 1.5GHz 64-bit quad-core CPU (4GB RAM)
  • Includes Pre-Loaded 32GB EVO+ Micro SD Card (Class 10), USB MicroSD Card Reader
  • CanaKit Premium High-Gloss Raspberry Pi 4 Case with Integrated Fan Mount, CanaKit Low Noise Bearing System Fan
  • CanaKit 3.5A USB-C Raspberry Pi 4 Power Supply (US Plug) with Noise Filter, Set of Heat Sinks, Display Cable - 6 foot (Supports up to 4K60p)
  • CanaKit USB-C PiSwitch (On/Off Power Switch for Raspberry Pi 4)

Knowledge Graph Memory is a fit when facts and relationships must persist between conversations or tasks. Decide what data may be retained, where it is stored and how deletion is handled before putting customer or proprietary information into the graph.

Local files: Filesystem

The Filesystem server is the direct choice for local project files. Grant only the directories required for the task. A read-only workspace is preferable for analysis, while a separate writable directory can be used for generated output. Never expose an entire home directory merely because a client asks for a convenient path.

Browser automation: Browser Use, Playwright and Chrome DevTools MCP

These three names overlap but suit different workflows:

  • Browser Use is oriented toward agent-style browser tasks.
  • Playwright is a strong fit when you want explicit browser automation and testing primitives.
  • Chrome DevTools MCP is appropriate when inspection, debugging and Chrome developer-tool context matter.

Browser access is high risk: pages can contain login forms, private data, destructive buttons and prompt-injection text. Use a dedicated browser profile, non-production accounts and an allowlist of domains. Require human approval before purchases, account changes, deletions or other irreversible actions.

Documentation retrieval: Context7

Context7 is designed to provide documentation to an agent at the time it needs it. Pin the library or framework version where possible and ask the model to show which documentation version it used. Retrieved text should be treated as reference material, not as permission to run an unreviewed migration or command.

Repositories and developer workflows: GitHub MCP server

The GitHub MCP server is the natural candidate for repository-aware work such as examining issues, reviewing pull requests or navigating project files. Use a token with the smallest practical scope, separate read and write credentials and require review before merging, changing branch protection or altering releases.

How to compare MCP servers before installing one

Popularity is only a discovery signal. Evaluate each candidate against the following dimensions:

Dimension Questions to answer Why it matters
Task fit Does it expose the exact operation you need, or only a loosely related tool? Fewer, better-scoped tools reduce confusion and accidental actions.
Provenance Is it maintained by the vendor or an identifiable community project? Is the source repository clear? Ownership and review practices affect trust and support.
Maintenance When were releases, commits and dependency updates last made? Stale dependencies can leave known defects unaddressed.
Transport Does it use local stdio or a remote HTTP connection? Transport changes deployment, firewall, authentication and isolation requirements.
Authentication Which tokens, OAuth grants, cookies or environment variables are required? Credentials determine what an agent can read or change.
Permission scope Can tools write files, execute commands, send messages or modify cloud resources? Broad permissions increase the impact of a compromised or mistaken call.
Output size Can responses be limited, paginated or filtered? Large results consume context and can hide the information an agent needs.
Host compatibility Does your MCP client support the server’s protocol version and transport? A popular server is unusable if your host cannot launch or authenticate it.

Transport, setup and permissions

Stdio servers

Stdio is a local process model: the MCP client starts a server and exchanges messages over standard input and output. It is convenient for desktop development and keeps traffic on the local machine, but the launched process inherits whatever operating-system permissions you give it. Use a dedicated working directory, a locked-down service account where practical and explicit environment variables for secrets.

HTTP servers

An HTTP MCP server may run locally or on another host. Confirm TLS, authentication, network exposure, request limits and logging behavior. Do not assume that “remote” means safer; a public endpoint with a powerful token can be more dangerous than a local, read-only process.

A repeatable installation checklist

  1. Find the project’s official repository or vendor documentation and confirm the package name and supported MCP version.
  2. Read the tool list and mark which operations are read-only, mutating or capable of code execution.
  3. Create a dedicated credential with the minimum scopes and store it in the client’s secret mechanism, not in a prompt or checked-in configuration file.
  4. Restrict filesystem paths, browser domains, repositories and network destinations before the first connection.
  5. Start with a harmless read operation and inspect the complete request and response.
  6. Enable write actions only after you have logs, approval gates and a recovery plan.

What current ecosystem statistics do—and do not—tell you

A 2026 MCP Trove snapshot reports that 89% of tracked servers use stdio, TypeScript and Python account for 78.5% of listings, and the median server exposes 10 tools. These are directory-snapshot statistics, not a census of every server or a measure of usage. They are useful for anticipating common implementation patterns: local stdio is likely to be the easiest path, and TypeScript or Python are the languages you will encounter most often.

The official MCP Registry provides a centralized place to discover and share servers. Ecosystem reports also list first-party or packaged examples such as GitHub, Stripe, Shopify, Microsoft Learn and Docker. Directory totals differ because registries include, deduplicate and classify projects differently; do not add their totals together.

Security and maintenance risks

Security reports describe ordinary dependency and credential problems as well as MCP-specific tool-poisoning concerns. Tool descriptions, documentation and returned content can contain instructions that try to redirect an agent. Treat all of that text as untrusted input.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Verify the repository owner, release provenance and dependency health.
  • Review every requested permission, including file, shell, browser and cloud access.
  • Separate read-only and write-capable credentials.
  • Log tool calls and retain enough context to investigate an unexpected action.
  • Pin versions when reproducibility matters, then schedule deliberate updates.
  • Test with synthetic data and a disposable account before connecting production systems.

A high star count does not establish that a server is safe, maintained or suitable for your data.

Screenshot capture for MCP and browser workflows

If your agent needs visual evidence from a website, ScreenshotNeo is an MCP server and website screenshot API. Its MCP tools are take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf, so an MCP client such as Claude, Cursor or another compatible client can request captures without you writing browser-launch code.

ScreenshotNeo’s capture pipeline accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before the shot. Each step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

For non-MCP integrations, the API supports full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element shots, dark mode, 12 device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper and page controls, HTML/CSS rendering, custom JavaScript and CSS, clicks before capture, hidden selectors, selector or network-idle waits, request and resource blocking, custom headers, cookies, user agents and Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, selectable-TTL caching, signed public image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify migration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Or skip the browser setup

Call the endpoint directly (see the ScreenshotNeo documentation) when you only need an image or PDF:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Cookie banners, popups and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages and failed loads are never billed; and the MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

A practical decision path

  1. Write down the single task your agent must perform, such as “read local markdown,” “look up current framework docs” or “inspect a pull request.”
  2. Select the narrowest server in the task list above instead of installing a collection “just in case.”
  3. Check provenance, maintenance, transport, authentication and permissions.
  4. Connect it with read-only access and test one predictable request.
  5. Measure response size, latency and failure behavior in your own environment.
  6. Add write permissions, additional servers or automation only when the previous step is understood and logged.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can GitHub stars tell me which MCP server is used most in production?

No. Stars are a public popularity and visibility signal. There is no audited, comparable invocation figure for individual MCP servers.

Should I install several servers at once?

Start with one server that matches a defined task. Adding servers increases permission surface, configuration complexity and the amount of untrusted tool output your client must handle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a local stdio server automatically safer than a remote HTTP server?

Neither transport is automatically safe. Stdio limits network exposure but runs with local process permissions; HTTP requires careful TLS, authentication and network controls.
