To play Mortal Kombat 11 with two people on the same system, connect a separate compatible controller for each player, open the game’s local or versus mode, and have Player 2 join when prompted. Both players can then choose fighters and start the match. Local two-player play is listed for PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch; exact menu labels and join buttons can vary by platform and game version.
Set up a two-player match on one system
- Connect both controllers. Make sure each controller is paired or plugged in and recognized by your console or PC. Assign the second controller to a separate player or device if the system asks.
- Open Mortal Kombat 11’s local or versus mode. Choose the mode for a match on the same system, rather than an online match.
- Join as Player 2. At the versus screen, use the join or confirm input shown on Player 2’s controller. The prompt is not documented as one universal button across platforms.
- Select fighters and begin. Each player chooses a character, then starts the match using the on-screen instructions.
The official listings confirm two-player local capacity: PlayStation lists 1–2 players, Xbox lists local multiplayer for 2–2, and Nintendo lists single-system play for 1–2. These are platform capability specifications, not a guarantee that every controller arrangement or menu behaves identically.

Choose the right local mode on Nintendo Switch
For two people sharing one Switch, choose single-system play. Nintendo lists that mode for 1–2 players and says, “Multiplayer requires one compatible controller per player.” That means each person needs a compatible input; one Joy-Con per person may be an option depending on the configuration supported by the game.
Local wireless is a different option from playing together on one system. Nintendo lists local wireless for two players, while its single-system listing covers two players on the same console. Use single-system play for couch-versus play on one Switch.

What to know on PlayStation, Xbox and PC
PlayStation
PlayStation’s Mortal Kombat 11 page lists 1–2 players. Connect or assign the second controller, then use the game’s local versus option and follow the Player 2 prompt. PlayStation’s online-play notes concern online features, not the same-system match.

Xbox
Xbox lists local multiplayer for 2–2 and online multiplayer for 2–8 as separate capabilities. A same-console local match does not require the online multiplayer subscription listed for console online play. Xbox Cloud Gaming availability should not be taken as confirmation that two local controller inputs work in a cloud session; the Xbox listing does not establish that setup.

PC
Connect two recognized input devices before joining local versus. WB Games Support says PC keyboard controls are fully remappable and that the game supports alternative gameplay input devices, including arcade-style fight sticks and the Xbox Adaptive Controller. The exact device combination depends on the PC setup; the cited support information does not define one universal two-player keyboard-and-controller arrangement.

If Player 2 cannot join
- Check that the second controller is connected to the same console or PC and recognized by its operating system.
- At the local or versus screen, look for the displayed join or confirm prompt and press it using Player 2’s controller.
- If both players appear to control the same fighter, or Player 2 does not appear, check the console or PC settings to make sure the second controller is assigned as a separate player or device. Return to local versus and try joining again.
- On Switch, confirm that each player has a compatible controller; single-system play and local wireless are separate modes.
Local play, online play and subscriptions
Local versus on the same system is distinct from online multiplayer. The online membership requirements shown by the platform stores apply to online play: Nintendo says online play requires a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership, while Xbox lists a qualifying Game Pass plan for console online multiplayer. PlayStation describes online play as optional and notes that online features require a PlayStation account. Those online conditions are not prerequisites for the same-system local match described above.
