There is no independently tested “best” Moodle theme for every school or training site. The right choice depends first on compatibility with your Moodle release, then on how much branding and page-building control you need, what your budget allows, and whether the theme meets your accessibility and support requirements. These eight options provide a practical shortlist; check each current listing before installing or purchasing.
Free Moodle themes to consider

Rank #3
Edwiser RemUI
Edwiser RemUI offers a visual personalizer, page builder, dashboards, dark mode, focus mode, RTL support, and templates, according to Edwiser. The vendor page lists theme files for Moodle 3.0–5.1 and says to use the version that matches the Moodle release. Edwiser’s page describes multiple price plans, a 15-day trial, and a 30-day refund claim; confirm the terms and current availability directly with the vendor.
How to choose the right theme
Start with your Moodle version and hosting
Match the theme’s stated compatibility range to the exact Moodle release running your site. A range on a marketplace or vendor page is a point-in-time claim, not a guarantee for every configuration. Also confirm that your hosting environment permits third-party plugin installation. Moodle’s marketplace listings are the starting point for checking the options above, but verify compatibility and maintenance status before rollout.
Match page control to the work you need to do
Decide whether your team only needs branding and color changes or must build custom front pages and course pages, create reusable blocks, filter courses, or edit layouts visually. These are different levels of control; a longer feature list does not establish better teaching or learning outcomes. A Boost child theme may be enough for a lighter customization job, while a paid builder may be worth considering when staff need to change many page layouts themselves.
Evaluate accessibility with real tasks
Test the theme against your institution’s accessibility requirements rather than relying on a feature label. Check keyboard navigation, screen-reader behavior, color contrast, mobile layout, translations, and right-to-left content on the pages learners actually use. An “accessibility widget” does not by itself demonstrate conformance.
Compare the full license and support terms
For paid themes, check the current price, whether renewal is required, how many sites the license covers, what updates and support are included, and the refund conditions. For any theme, confirm its update cadence and support window for your Moodle release. Avoid treating promotional claims about speed or broad plugin compatibility as independent test results; no independent performance or accessibility measurements are established here.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Installing a Moodle theme
For RemUI, Edwiser’s guidance is to download the theme file that matches the site’s Moodle release, then upload it through the plugin installer. The exact labels may vary by Moodle version; use current vendor documentation and your institution’s change-control process.
- Confirm the Moodle release running on the site and download the matching RemUI theme ZIP.
- In Moodle, open Site administration → Plugins → Install plugins.
- Upload the ZIP file and review the plugin validation report before proceeding.
- Follow the current vendor instructions and your site’s normal testing and deployment process.
What “best” can—and cannot—mean
Edwiser’s 2026 comparison names additional options, including Space, Adaptable, Academi, and Maker. Its rankings, ratings, feature comparisons, and “best” labels are vendor-published assessments, not independent theme testing. Edwiser also reports 4.9 stars across 200+ reviews for RemUI; treat that as the vendor’s reported rating, not an independent review result. No independent study statistic establishing that a Moodle theme improves performance, accessibility outcomes, learner satisfaction, or learning gains is established here. Choose based on verified compatibility and your own testing with representative courses and users.
