Estimate it from the PC’s average power draw at the wall: watts × 24 hours × 30 days ÷ 1,000 gives monthly energy use in kWh. At an illustrative 65 W, that is 46.8 kWh in a 30-day month. Your cost depends on your electricity provider’s applicable rate and billing details; 65 W is not a measured benchmark for a current gaming PC streaming YouTube.

Calculate the monthly electricity use

For a 30-day month, a PC left running 24 hours a day operates for 720 hours. Use its average wall power, not the wattage printed on its power supply:

Monthly energy (kWh) = average watts × 720 ÷ 1,000

Assumed average wall draw Energy in 30 days
50 W 36 kWh
65 W 46.8 kWh
100 W 72 kWh

These are arithmetic examples for assumed power draws, not measurements of particular PCs. Each additional 10 W sustained for the full month adds 7.2 kWh. For a different billing period, replace 720 with the actual hours: average watts × hours ÷ 1,000.

What that energy could cost in India

There is no single household electricity rate for all of India. The Central Electricity Authority’s 2025 comparison reports domestic effective rates from 118 paise/kWh in Tamil Nadu to 888 paise/kWh for Maharashtra–Mumbai (TATA), using an assumed 1 kW sanctioned load and 100 units per month. Applying those comparison endpoints to the 46.8 kWh illustration gives ₹55.22 to ₹415.58 for energy, or about ₹55 to ₹416 when rounded.

That is an illustration, not a national bill range or a personal quote. The Ministry of Power says, “Electricity tariffs in India are determined by the Appropriate Electricity Regulatory Commissions under the Electricity Act, 2003.” State commissions set retail tariffs, and state governments may subsidize domestic consumers. Your bill can also depend on your utility, consumption slab, fixed charges, taxes, subsidies and other adjustments. Check your latest bill or your state/utility tariff order for the rate that applies to the extra units. If those units move total household consumption into a higher slab, multiplying them by your bill’s average rate may not reflect their incremental cost. The estimate here covers energy charges only, not those other bill components.

Why 65 W is only an illustration

The International Energy Agency’s 2009 report Gadgets and Gigawatts: Policies for Energy-Efficient Electronics lists 65 W for a desktop PC in idle mode and 32 W for an idle monitor in an illustrative mode table. Its 97 W combined example is historical, generic data—not a measurement of a contemporary gaming PC running a YouTube stream. No directly applicable published statistic establishes the monthly electricity cost of a current gaming PC streaming continuously while idle in India.

Actual draw varies by setup and operating state. A stream may involve encoding, browser playback, uploading, background services, a display left on and attached peripherals. Don’t treat any one of those factors as a fixed wattage addition without measuring your own equipment.

Measure your setup at the wall

  1. Choose what you want to cost. To estimate the tower alone, measure only the PC. To estimate the whole setup, include the monitor and the peripherals you intend to leave powered.
  2. Re-create the actual streaming state. Run the intended apps and stream, and set the display and accessories as they will be used. Record what was included so the result is clear.
  3. Use a plug-in electricity usage monitor or watt meter. Read its power measurement at the wall. This gives you an input for the calculation; the meter measures consumption but does not reduce it.
  4. Average fluctuating readings over time. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program advises measuring energy over a period and dividing by that period to find average power when consumption fluctuates. A brief reading may not represent a full day’s workload.
  5. Calculate the bill estimate. Multiply the average watts by your billing-period hours and divide by 1,000. Multiply the resulting kWh by your applicable marginal electricity rate for an energy-charge approximation.

Reduce use only where it fits the stream

ENERGY STAR’s computer guidance covers efficient operation in modes such as Off, Sleep and Idle, along with power-management features. But putting a PC to sleep interrupts a stream that depends on it staying online. If continuous streaming is not actually required, consider whether planned downtime or power management during non-streaming hours suits your channel. No particular saving can be assumed for a gaming setup without measuring the change.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep prerecorded videos looping on a YouTube channel, a cloud service can avoid leaving your home PC running for that task. StreamNeo uploads and loops videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The stream keeps the quality as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it also automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required, once per account. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
