There is no single rupee cost for running an old laptop around the clock: it depends on the laptop’s average power draw at the wall and your household’s applicable electricity rate. A 30-day month is 720 hours, so each average watt uses 0.72 kWh (one unit) per month. At an illustrative average draw of 20–60 W, that is 14.4–43.2 units; multiply your measured use by your own marginal rate to estimate the energy charge.
Estimate monthly electricity use
Use average power draw while the laptop is playing YouTube, not the maximum wattage printed on its charger. The calculation for continuous use over 30 days is:
Average wall draw (W) × 720 hours ÷ 1,000 = monthly kWh (units)

For example, 1 W × 720 ÷ 1,000 = 0.72 kWh per month. The table applies that arithmetic to three assumed draws. These are scenario calculations, not measurements of a particular old laptop.

The 20–60 W range is illustrative, not a guaranteed range for every old laptop. Actual draw varies with the device and how it is set up.
Convert units into a rupee estimate
Multiply the monthly kWh you measured or estimated by the applicable marginal energy rate for your home. The resulting figure is an estimate of the energy-charge portion—not necessarily the total change in your bill. Your bill can also reflect the applicable tariff structure, adjustments, subsidies, and other charges.

There is no single rupee-per-unit rate for every Indian household. Retail tariffs are determined by State Electricity Regulatory Commissions, and state governments may subsidize particular consumer categories. Rates and adjustments can depend on location, domestic category, and consumption slab. Use your current bill and your DISCOM’s or regulator’s current tariff schedule rather than applying a rate from another state or an older example.
The Ministry of Power’s official website provides information about the electricity sector. The Central Electricity Authority lists its Tariff and Duty of Electricity Supply in India—March 2026 compilation. For a jurisdiction-specific example of how tariff documents change, MSEDCL lists an MYT tariff order dated 25 March 2026. These are references for finding the relevant schedule, not a universal household rate.

Measure the laptop’s actual draw at the wall
For a more useful estimate, measure the laptop and its charger together while YouTube is playing under representative conditions. A plug-in electricity usage meter can report wall draw; no particular model is required, and you should check the meter’s electrical and outlet compatibility. The charger label gives its maximum rating, not the laptop’s average consumption during playback.
- Set up representative playback. Use the screen brightness, playback resolution, browser, power mode, and display or sleep settings you expect to use. Keep the laptop awake if it must stay online continuously.
- Measure at the wall. Connect a compatible plug-in energy meter between the outlet and the laptop’s charger, then observe power while the video plays.
- Use an average, not a momentary peak. Record an average over a sufficiently representative interval. Screen brightness, power settings, browser behavior, and playback conditions can change consumption.
- Calculate monthly units. Insert the average watts into the 30-day formula above. If your actual runtime is not 720 hours, use your runtime hours instead: watts × hours ÷ 1,000.
- Apply your local rate. Multiply the resulting units by the marginal energy rate applicable to your household and check your bill for tariff conditions or adjustments.
If you compare two playback setups, compare their measured average wall watts under the same conditions and apply the same hours and tariff. Different state tariffs or billing slabs are not evidence that one laptop is more efficient.

Why the charger wattage does not give the answer
A charger marked, for example, with a maximum wattage is rated to supply up to that amount; it does not show what the laptop continuously draws while playing a video. The laptop may use less, and its consumption can change with screen brightness, power mode, and playback behavior. A wall measurement during representative playback is more informative than the charger label.
