To get a tempered elder dragon investigation, collect tempered monster tracks, then check the Resource Center and register any matching investigation under Manage Investigations. Launch it from the quest board or Handler. This is the best-supported general route; the exact Iceborne Master Rank unlock thresholds and assignments for every elder dragon are not established by the available guides. Ordinary elder dragon investigations are not necessarily tempered.
How elder dragon investigations unlock
Investigations are special quests with additional rewards and conditions. They can be awarded randomly after you discover a monster, examine its tracks, break parts, or hunt it. Gathering tracks is a commonly described way to prompt an investigation, but it does not guarantee one for a specific target. GameWith’s investigation guide describes this acquisition and registration flow.
Collect tracks, then check your investigations
For the tempered route, seek out tempered monster tracks. GameWith describes these tracks as blue and advises checking the Resource Center after collecting them. The resulting investigation is random, so track gathering should be treated as a way to build chances, not a guaranteed unlock.

Register the investigation before launching it
- At the Resource Center, choose Manage Investigations.
- Register the investigation you want to play. Only registered investigations appear in the available quest list.
- Choose the registered investigation from the quest board or Handler and launch it.
GameWith says the Resource Center can hold up to 250 investigations; its guide was updated August 21, 2022. Registration itself does not use an attempt. Check the investigation’s listed conditions and reward slots before departing.

Where to find tempered elder dragon tracks
GameWith’s tempered-tracking guide, last updated August 21, 2022, lists these High Rank locations. The guide also says its Iceborne information was still being updated, so use this as a starting point for the named cases—not as a complete map for Master Rank or every Iceborne elder dragon. See the tempered-track guide.
| Region | Target or track location in the cited guide |
|---|---|
| Ancient Forest | Kushala Daora, Area 16 |
| Wildspire Waste | Teostra, Area 8 |
| Coral Highlands | Kirin, Area 12 |
| Rotten Vale | Vaal Hazak, Area 16 |
| Elder’s Recess | Random elder dragon, Area 4 |
The listed routes are not a definitive current Iceborne location chart. The guide’s High Rank progression details should not be carried over to Master Rank: its Iceborne coverage was explicitly incomplete, and exact current Master Rank thresholds and assignments for every elder dragon are not established here.

What tempered investigations offer
Investigations display their reward categories in advance, including bronze, silver, gold, and purple bonus rewards. GameWith associates purple bonus rewards with tempered investigations, but a reward category is not a promise that a particular item will drop. Tempered investigation rewards can include feystones; feystones can be appraised into decorations.

High Rank and Master Rank are not interchangeable
The location chart above concerns the specific High Rank cases listed by GameWith. Do not assume that a High Rank track location, Hunter Rank milestone, or assigned-quest threshold gives the corresponding Master Rank unlock. The cited material does not establish a complete, current Iceborne progression chart for every elder dragon.
Iceborne is required for Master Rank event quests, according to Capcom’s Master Rank event schedule. That requirement applies to those event quests; it does not mean the expansion is needed for every base-game investigation instruction.

Why older Threat Level 3 advice may differ
Some investigation advice reflects base-game updates rather than an Iceborne-specific change. In patch notes published June 15, 2018, Capcom said version 4.00 added Teostra and Lunastra to the Threat Level 3 investigation pool. The notes also said Threat Level 3 investigations were equalized for increased special reward-slot chances, matching the previous Vaal Hazak value. This is historical version 4.00 information, not a current Iceborne progression guide. Read Capcom’s update notes.
