For a new product, start with a modular monolith unless you already have a clear need for independently deployed or independently scaled capabilities—and the team to operate them. A monolith can have strict internal boundaries; microservices add network communication, separate service lifecycles, and distributed-system work. Split a service when a demonstrated product or organizational need justifies those costs, not because the label sounds more scalable.

What is the difference between a monolith and microservices?

Monolith

A monolithic application is packaged and deployed as one application unit. That describes its deployment boundary, not the quality of its internal design: a monolith can be organized into distinct modules with clear responsibilities. AWS recommends keeping a monolith modular so it can evolve as a product grows (AWS Well-Architected Framework, REL03-BP01).

Microservices

Microservices divide an application into services centered on capabilities. Those services communicate across boundaries, so their interactions need to be well-defined and reliable (AWS: What is Microservices Architecture?). A service boundary is therefore both a code-ownership choice and a runtime and deployment choice.

Modular monolith

A modular monolith is one deployable application whose internal modules have explicit boundaries. It can preserve the option to extract a service later without requiring network communication and independent operations before they are useful. That is a practical synthesis of AWS’s modular-monolith guidance and the tradeoffs described by Martin Fowler; it does not mean every monolith can be split cheaply (Fowler, “Microservice Trade-Offs”).

How to choose for your product

Use these questions as a decision framework, not as a numerical scorecard. The right choice depends on the workload, domain, and organization; the available guidance does not establish that either architecture is categorically faster or cheaper.

Decision A modular monolith is a stronger fit when… Microservices are a stronger fit when…
Domain boundaries Responsibilities are still emerging or the right boundaries are uncertain. Keep modules explicit and revise them as the product teaches you. Capabilities have stable boundaries that can be owned and evolved separately.
Deployment A coordinated application release is workable. A monolith can still be continuously delivered. A capability needs independent deployment, and the organization can sustain separate service lifecycles.
Scaling The application can be scaled as a unit, or no measured workload calls for service-specific scaling. Services have distinct scaling requirements that justify separate deployments and infrastructure.
Operations The team benefits from simpler in-process calls and one application runtime. The team can support service discovery, communication, monitoring, tracing, and distributed failure handling.
Data Shared transactions and a common persistence model are useful while the domain is changing. The team can manage data isolation and the consistency consequences of workflows across service boundaries.

These distinctions reflect AWS and Fowler’s discussion of deployment and operational tradeoffs, alongside Microsoft’s guidance on service monitoring, tracing, and data isolation (Fowler; Microsoft Learn: Microservices Architecture Style).

What microservices give you—and what they cost

Independent deployment and ownership

When capabilities have stable boundaries, separate teams can own and evolve them, and services can be deployed independently. That independence is a real benefit only if the organization can use it: Fowler notes that a suite of services requiring coordinated deployments misses the defining promise of independent microservices (Fowler, “Microservice Trade-Offs”).

Distributed communication and operations

Separating services turns some in-process interactions into network calls. Those calls can add latency and can fail; diagnosing behavior across services also requires more debugging, monitoring, and tracing than a single application runtime (AWS Well-Architected Framework; Microsoft Learn). The team needs to be able to observe interactions across boundaries and handle partial failures, not just write the service code.

Data boundaries and consistency

Service-level data isolation can clarify ownership and reduce direct coordination between capabilities. But workflows that span services cannot simply assume a single shared transaction will cover every step. The design must account for what happens when one part of a workflow succeeds and another fails, and for how the system exposes or resolves temporarily different states. Microsoft’s guidance identifies data isolation as a microservices consideration (Microsoft Learn: Microservices Architecture Style).

When should you build or extract a service?

Early product or small team

Build a modular monolith when the product’s responsibilities and domain boundaries are unclear. Make module ownership and interfaces visible so the design can change as you learn; avoid distributed operations that have no current payoff. AWS explicitly allows a monolith where responsibilities are not yet well-defined, provided it remains modular (AWS Prescriptive Guidance: Decomposing monoliths into microservices).

A specific scaling or release bottleneck

First identify the capability whose workload, release cadence, or ownership genuinely differs from the rest. If separate scaling or independent deployment solves a concrete problem, that capability may be a candidate for extraction. Decompose around the capability and its boundary rather than splitting by technical layer or aiming for a particular service count.

An organization ready to operate distributed systems

Microservices become more plausible when the workload benefits from separation and teams can sustain the resulting operational responsibilities. AWS’s architecture guidance makes both workload suitability and organizational capability part of the decision (AWS Well-Architected question REL_3).

A migration from an existing monolith

Treat decomposition as an investment with migration work and cross-service consequences, not as a free rewrite. Keep the existing architecture until the target boundaries and the reason for changing them are concrete. AWS provides dedicated guidance for decomposing monoliths (AWS Prescriptive Guidance).

Can a modular monolith scale?

It can be a valid starting architecture as adoption grows; the fact that an application is a monolith does not by itself show that service-specific scaling is needed. AWS advises that even a monolith should remain modular and able to evolve as the product scales with user adoption (AWS Well-Architected Framework, REL03-BP01). Consider extracting a service when actual workload or ownership needs justify separate deployment and operations, rather than assuming a monolith must eventually be replaced.
