A random two-second blackout during a game or other graphics task can come from a Windows graphics-driver recovery, an incompatible app, or a break in the monitor’s signal path. The timing alone does not identify the cause. Start by checking whether the PC keeps working, then test the cable, port, display mode, and app one at a time.
What a two-second blackout tells you—and what it doesn’t
Windows has a graphics recovery mechanism called Timeout Detection and Recovery (TDR). Microsoft’s Windows Display Driver Model documentation says the default GPU task timeout is two seconds; if a task exceeds the permitted time, Windows can reset part of the graphics stack and redraw the screen. Some older apps may remain black after recovery. Microsoft explains the timeout and recovery process here.
That timing makes TDR one possible explanation, not a diagnosis. A two-second dropout can also result from an incompatible app or a momentary loss of signal between the graphics card and monitor. Without knowing the PC, display, connection, and what continues running during the blackout, the duration alone cannot distinguish among them.

When the screen goes dark, note whether audio and the app continue, whether the monitor shows a “no signal” message, and whether one display or all connected displays are affected. These observations help narrow the next test but do not prove a particular component has failed.

Check the signal path before changing software
- Reseat the cable. Make sure the monitor cable is secure at both the monitor and graphics-card ends. Microsoft recommends checking the connection when troubleshooting an external display. See Microsoft’s external-monitor connection steps.
- Change one connection component at a time. If available, try another graphics-card output, a known-good cable, or another monitor. Microsoft also recommends testing another cable or display to help rule out hardware. Microsoft’s screen-flicker guidance includes these checks. If a change stops the blackouts, repeat the test if practical to confirm which change mattered.
A cable is a plausible cause, especially at a demanding resolution and refresh rate, but it is not the only explanation. Intel’s Arc A770 Limited Edition guidance describes flicker and stutter above 60 Hz in its tested configuration and recommends a certified cable with enough bandwidth for the selected mode. That is a model-specific example, not evidence that every brief blackout is a cable problem. Read Intel’s Arc A770 display guidance.
Use Task Manager to separate an app issue from a driver issue
Microsoft recommends opening Task Manager while the screen flickers and watching whether Task Manager flickers at the same time. If it does, a display-driver problem is more likely; if Task Manager remains steady while another app flickers, an incompatible app is more likely. This is a clue, not definitive proof. Follow Microsoft’s screen-flicker troubleshooting steps.

- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
If the blackout happens only in one game or graphics app, check that app for known issues and updates. If the problem began after a graphics-driver change, consider updating, rolling back, or reinstalling the display driver as appropriate. Intel’s black-screen guidance also recommends checking cable connections and installing the latest display driver. See Intel’s discrete-graphics black-screen guidance.
For a brief driver-related glitch, Microsoft documents a graphics-driver reset shortcut: press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B. The screen may flicker or beep as Windows attempts the reset. This can be a useful recovery step, but it does not establish why the blackout happened.

Test refresh rate, resolution, and display mode
If the problem tracks a high refresh rate, a resolution change, HDR, or another display-mode switch, test a lower refresh rate that the display supports at the current resolution. Microsoft notes that available rates depend on the display and hardware, and selecting a rate unsupported at the current resolution can cause Windows to change the resolution. Microsoft explains how to change the refresh rate.
Also check that the cable and connection can carry the mode you have selected. Change one setting at a time and see whether the symptom follows the mode. Do not conclude that the cable is faulty unless testing a different cable or connection changes the behavior.

Escalate to load and power checks only if the PC is unstable
If the display blackout comes with freezes, crashes, reboots, or other instability under heavy graphics load, widen the investigation beyond the monitor signal. NVIDIA advises checking for known application issues and confirming that the power supply meets the graphics card’s requirements; other system components can also contribute to instability under load. Consult NVIDIA’s graphics troubleshooting forum guidance.

An isolated display dropout does not by itself show that the power supply or graphics card is failing. Start with the connection, app/driver, and display-mode checks; investigate broader hardware stability when other symptoms point that way.
