Cypress is a browser testing platform you install in your project. Use end-to-end (E2E) tests for important journeys through the application and backend, component tests for focused browser-based UI behavior, and API tests for direct endpoint checks. A dependable suite combines these layers, chooses real or stubbed network responses deliberately, and waits for the application to be ready before running in continuous integration (CI).
What Cypress can test—and what each test proves
Cypress describes its product as a tool for testing your own applications. Its documentation distinguishes several test layers; they answer different questions rather than substituting for one another. Cypress explains E2E testing and component testing in its documentation.
End-to-end tests: does a user journey work across the stack?
An E2E test drives the application in a browser and exercises the backend along with the UI. Use it for high-value paths such as authentication, completing a purchase, persisting data across screens, or a smoke check before deployment. Because the test crosses application layers, it can expose integration failures that an isolated UI test cannot. It also needs more setup, often including backend infrastructure and prepared test data.
Component tests: does this UI component behave correctly?
Component tests mount a component in a real browser so you can focus on behavior such as a form’s validation state, a date picker, or a design-system control. These tests usually avoid external systems and are useful for testing focused scenarios. They do not prove that the complete application, backend, and integration path work together.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
API and accessibility checks
API tests make direct requests to endpoints and assert on responses. Accessibility checks help identify accessibility issues in the interface. Neither an E2E test nor a component test should be treated as a replacement for unit tests or backend service tests: choose each layer according to the behavior it needs to verify.
Install Cypress and open the app
The Cypress App is locally installed software, not a hosted test runner. Add Cypress as a development dependency using your project’s package manager, then launch the app. The first launch guides you through selecting E2E or component testing and creates initial configuration. Follow the current installation guide and check its system requirements for requirements that may change between releases.
Install with your package manager
- npm:
npm install --save-dev cypress - Yarn:
yarn add --dev cypress - pnpm:
pnpm add --save-dev cypress - Bun:
bun add --dev cypress
Launch the Cypress App
- From the project directory, run
npx cypress open. Use your package manager’s equivalent command if needed. - In the app, choose E2E Testing or Component Testing and follow the setup prompts.
- Choose a browser and create or open a spec, then use the app to run it.
For repeatable local or CI runs, use npx cypress run. Avoid assuming an exact Cypress version from an article: consult the live installation page when choosing a version or checking compatibility.
Choose an installed browser explicitly
Cypress launches its own browser instance to provide a clean environment and privileged automation APIs. Its installation documentation lists support for the latest three major versions of Chrome, Edge, and Firefox; WebKit support is marked experimental. The same page notes that Firefox 141 and later requires Cypress 14.1.0 or later. It also says Electron is deprecated as a test browser and is expected to be removed in a future Cypress version. Since these details can change, confirm them against the browser launch documentation before updating a CI image.

Choose real server responses or stub them
Use real responses when a test’s purpose is to verify the actual client-server contract on a critical path. Stubs are useful when the goal is to isolate UI behavior or exercise a controlled edge case. A suite can use both: real services for a small number of representative integration journeys, and stubs for focused, repeatable UI cases. Cypress describes this tradeoff in its network requests guide.
Use the real backend for contract confidence
A test that reaches the real server can catch a mismatch between the response shape the server returns and the data the client consumes. Plan how it will obtain predictable data—for example, by seeding a test database—and account for the extra setup and time required to traverse the server stack.
Use cy.intercept() to observe or control traffic
cy.intercept() can observe outgoing requests, wait for a request, and assert on request details. It can also return a controlled response, including a body, status, headers, or delay. For example, a stub can force an error response so you can verify that the UI displays its failure state without depending on a live service being in that state.

A stub validates how the client handles the response you supplied; by itself, it does not establish that the real service returns that response or honors the same contract. Label tests and fixtures clearly so a passing stubbed test is not mistaken for a live integration check.
Run Cypress reliably in CI
Cypress documents use with CI providers including GitHub Actions, CircleCI, GitLab CI, Jenkins, and AWS CodeBuild. The basic pipeline is to install project dependencies and Cypress, start the application, wait until it responds, and then run the test command. See the CI overview and provider-specific guidance for current configuration syntax.
Wait for readiness, not an arbitrary delay
Starting a server in the background and immediately running Cypress can race: the first test may begin before the app is listening. Cypress specifically warns against a pattern like npm start & npx cypress run. Use a readiness check that waits for the application’s address to respond. Where appropriate, the official Cypress GitHub Action provides start and wait-on options; check the action documentation for the current syntax.
Budget for CI resources
Cypress’s published installation guidance suggests at least 2 CPUs and 4 GB of RAM for CI, and recommends 8 GB or more for long runs or video recording. Treat those as Cypress’s guidance, not a guarantee that every project will run well at those levels: actual needs depend on the application, parallel workload, browser, and recording settings. If runs fail intermittently, check available memory and CPU alongside logs and server readiness.

Decide whether Cypress Cloud is needed
The Cypress App can be used locally without Cloud. Cypress Cloud is an optional paid service for recording runs, viewing results, and test analytics. Consider it when a team needs shared run reporting or analytics; check Cypress’s current product information for available capabilities and plans rather than assuming a price.
Build a browser matrix that fits your users
Testing more browsers can increase confidence that behavior is not specific to one engine, but each additional CI job adds runtime and infrastructure demand. Cypress’s cross-browser testing guide describes browser coverage; its CI guidance recommends weighing confidence against duration and cost.
| Strategy | Useful when | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| One browser on every change | You need quick feedback on routine commits. | It provides less evidence about other browsers. |
| Selected browsers in CI | Your users rely on multiple browser families and you can prioritize the most relevant coverage. | More jobs increase run time and infrastructure use. |
| Broader browser checks on a schedule or release branch | You want additional coverage without making every change wait for the full matrix. | Some cross-browser regressions may be found later than failures in the routine job. |
Base the matrix on the browsers your product’s audience uses, keep browser versions current, and ensure each browser is installed in the local or CI environment. Because WebKit support is documented as experimental, weigh that status when deciding how much release confidence to place on it.

Troubleshoot common Cypress failures
- The first test fails because the app is unavailable: the server may not have finished starting. Replace an immediate background-start-and-test sequence or fixed sleep with a readiness check for the app’s address.
- A test passes with a stub but fails against the service: the stub may not match the real response contract or server behavior. Keep a representative real-backend test for the path where integration confidence matters.
- A browser cannot be launched in CI: confirm that the browser is installed and supported by the Cypress version in use, and check for changes to browser requirements or deprecations in the installation documentation.
- Long runs or recordings fail intermittently: inspect CI CPU and memory availability, especially if the job runs a broad browser matrix or records video.
- A test depends on data that varies between runs: arrange predictable backend state, such as seeding data for real-service tests, or stub the response when the test is specifically about UI handling rather than integration.
