In Modern Warfare Zombies (MWZ), start in the Low Threat Zone, use Contracts to build up Essence and gear, and move into more dangerous areas only when your squad is ready. Set a goal before you deploy, watch the shutdown timer, and extract when staying no longer serves that goal.
What to check before you deploy
MWZ is an open-world PvE mode set in Urzikstan and included with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III. Activision says players must own Modern Warfare III to access the mode. See the official Modern Warfare Zombies: How to Play guide for its access and gameplay overview.

Choose one main objective for the run: advance a story mission, earn resources through Contracts, explore, or acquire gear. That choice gives you a practical basis for deciding how much danger to accept and when to leave.

- In the lobby, check your equipped mission, Operator, weapons, gear, and carried Acquisitions.
- Bring items you expect to use. Activision cautions that gear taken into a deployment can be lost if dropped or if your Operator is eliminated.
- If you intend to enter a story mission, prepare and upgrade first. Its special exfil takes your squad to a mission location without support from other players in the general session.

How to build strength before crossing the map
Every deployment begins in the Low Threat Zone. Threat zones increase in difficulty by tier, and the center of the map is the most dangerous area. Activision’s beginner guide recommends finding a high-rarity weapon and Pack-a-Punching it before entering the Medium Threat Zone; its broader guidance is to improve your gear before pushing toward the center.
Use Contracts to earn Essence
Contracts are a useful early source of Essence, which you can spend on purchases and upgrades. They also award XP and may provide Acquisitions. Activision says Contracts in more dangerous Threat Levels offer better rewards, so moving up is a risk/reward decision—not an automatic next step. A better potential payout is of little use if your squad is not equipped to handle the added danger.
Understand optional activities before starting them
Activision’s guides name Spore Control Contracts, Aether Nests or Zombie Strongholds, Harvester Orbs, and Merc Camps. Know the task before committing: an Aether Nest is toxic, and you must find and destroy its nodes. A Merc Camp brings you into a fight involving mercenaries and zombies, so expect threats from both.

How to choose gear and a Field Upgrade
Activision’s Modern Warfare Zombies: Tactics guide says there is no single correct loadout. Choose gear for your playstyle or to cover a gap in your squad; its example builds are illustrations, not independently tested or current “meta” recommendations.

The tactics guide also lists Healing Aura, Frost Blast, Aether Shroud, and Tesla Storm. Their exact effects and current balance are not established here; check the in-game description before selecting one.
How to choose a Threat Zone and squad approach
Stay in the Low Threat Zone while you earn Essence and prepare; consider a higher tier when your weapon, armor, and squad can manage the added difficulty. The official guides describe higher Threat Levels as offering better Contract rewards, but they do not establish a universally best route.

Ordinary deployments can begin solo, as a duo, or as a trio. Activision’s guide-era description says a session can include up to 24 players and squads can merge up to six. Those are figures from official guides with 2024 copyright footers, not a guarantee that every current session uses unchanged limits. A coordinated squad can share support, while a solo player has more control over pace and risk. Story-mission locations are different: your squad is alone there.

When to extract
Activision describes a 45-minute deployment timer followed by a 15-minute shutdown event. You can extract earlier; you do not need to use all the available time. Keep the timer in view and leave before shutdown consumes your squad.
Base the decision on your goal and condition. If you have completed the task you came for, are carrying progress or gear you want to secure, or your squad is struggling, an early extract may be the sensible finish. Continuing can be worthwhile if you still have a clear objective and enough capacity to handle the risk.

How to think about a run that falls short
A story mission may take more than one deployment. Activision’s beginner guide says an incomplete mission does not make the run a failure: XP, Acquisitions, and experience can still contribute to progression. Reassess your equipment and approach before trying again rather than treating one unsuccessful attempt as lost effort.
These are foundational instructions from Activision’s official guides, whose page footers show 2024 copyright and which were accessed on October 7, 2026. They are not current patch notes, so they do not verify live weapon balance, bugs, or whether every mechanic has remained unchanged.
