Cypress lets frontend teams test JavaScript applications in a real browser at two useful levels: end-to-end (E2E) tests for user journeys and component tests for a focused component’s behavior and rendering. Choose the level based on what you need to prove; neither replaces every other kind of test. The locally installed Cypress App is free and open source. Cypress Cloud is a separate, optional service for recording CI runs, debugging, analytics, and orchestration.

Choose E2E or component testing by the behavior you need to validate

Need Cypress approach What it can establish
Check a critical user journey through the application E2E Exercises the application through browser actions and behavior, helping expose failures a user could encounter. Cypress describes local development as its primary workflow. Cypress E2E testing
Check an individual component’s interactions and rendered appearance Component testing Mounts the component in a real browser, rather than a simulated DOM, for focused feedback. It does not prove that a complete application journey works. Cypress component testing
Test a full Next.js page that relies on server-only methods E2E Cypress recommends E2E rather than component testing for pages whose server-side methods would not run in a component test. Check the current framework guide for details. Cypress React component testing
Review recorded CI failures, suite health, or orchestration needs Cypress Cloud An optional team service for CI run results, debugging, analytics, orchestration, and integrations. Evaluate its current entitlements against your usage. Cypress Cloud overview

Use E2E for a small set of high-value workflows and component tests where isolated UI behavior deserves faster, focused feedback. The available information does not establish that one strategy is universally faster or more effective; the right balance depends on scope, framework constraints, feedback needs, and maintenance cost.

Install Cypress and launch the local app

Cypress is installed in a project as a development dependency. The official installation guide lists these package-manager commands and corresponding launch commands; use the package manager already adopted by your project. Cypress installation guide

    • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
    • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
    • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
    • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  2. Start the application’s development server from your normal terminal or development workflow.

  3. Run the matching Cypress open command. Use the Cypress interface to select a testing type and configure or open a spec.

  4. Run tests against your local application while developing; configure CI separately to start the application before the test command.

Cypress advises: “Don’t try to start a web server from within Cypress scripts.” Keep server startup in the development or CI workflow, not inside a test. Cypress can test deployed applications, but it describes local development as its optimized workflow. Tests that depend on external sites can introduce disruption and flakiness, so weigh their value carefully. Effective E2E testing in Cypress

Check framework and browser support before choosing component tests

Component-testing availability depends on the exact framework, framework version, and bundler combination. Cypress’s current guide lists maintained integrations for React, Vue, Angular, and Svelte; its matrix includes React 18–19 with Vite 8 or Webpack 5 and Next.js 15–16 with React 18–19 and Webpack 5; Vue 3 with Vite 8 or Webpack 5; Angular 21–22 with Webpack 5; and Svelte 5 with Vite 8 or Webpack 5 marked alpha. Qwik and Lit entries are community integrations. These versions are time-sensitive: confirm the live matrix for your stack before adopting a setup. Component testing support matrix React component testing details

The installation guide lists support for the latest three major versions of Chrome, Edge, and Firefox. Firefox 141 and later require Cypress 14.1.0 or later. WebKit support is experimental. Cypress’s bundled Electron browser is deprecated and planned for removal in a future release, so select an installed browser such as Chrome rather than relying on Electron. Check the guide for current compatibility before upgrading. Supported browsers and system requirements

Plan CI resources conservatively

Cypress’s installation documentation recommends at least 2 CPUs and 4 GB RAM for a CI machine, with 8 GB or more for long runs or video recording. These are vendor recommendations, not independent benchmarks. Abrupt exits, missing or frozen video frames, and longer runtimes can be signs of insufficient resources. Cypress CI requirements

Keep tests focused on user-visible behavior

For E2E coverage, select a few important workflows—such as a sign-in or checkout path—and exercise them through the browser against the running application. Assertions should express outcomes a user can observe, not details of internal implementation that may change without changing the user experience. Component tests are useful when you need to isolate a UI component’s rendering and interaction behavior in a real browser. The Cypress guides establish these workflows but do not supply a universal target for test count, runtime, or coverage; set targets from your application’s risk and team feedback needs.

Cypress launches a controlled browser instance for an isolated environment and access to browser automation capabilities such as screenshots, video, network stubbing, and debugging. This is Cypress’s documented product design, not a guarantee that tests cannot be flaky. Follow Cypress’s reliability guidance and avoid coupling critical tests to unstable external sites. Troubleshoot common setup and reliability problems

  • The component-testing setup does not match your app. Framework support is specific to framework and bundler versions, and some integrations are community-maintained or alpha. Compare your exact stack with the current official support matrix before changing project configuration.

  • The browser will not launch or is unsupported. Verify the installed browser against Cypress’s current support policy and your Cypress version. Firefox 141 and later require Cypress 14.1.0 or later; WebKit remains experimental, and Electron is deprecated. Try a supported installed browser such as Chrome.

  • Tests fail because the app is unavailable. Start the development server before running Cypress, and configure the CI workflow to start it before tests. Do not start it from Cypress scripts.

  • Runs exit abruptly or video output is incomplete. Compare the CI machine with Cypress’s vendor resource recommendations. Insufficient resources may show up as abrupt exits, missing or frozen video frames, or slower runs.

Or skip the browser setup

If the task is capturing a website screenshot rather than testing application behavior, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. Its one-call cURL example returns an image file; see the API documentation for options and setup.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

  • Cookie banners are accepted and removed before capture; the service also removes known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Each step can be turned off.
  • Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.
  • An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
  • The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
