It is an abstraction, not a literal copy of reality: what belongs in the model depends on the problem the software must solve.
What does it mean to model the real world?
A model represents a system in a domain of interest. The Object Management Group’s UML 2.5 specification describes a model as making statements about a system while abstracting away details from a particular point of view and for a particular purpose. In practical terms, begin with the questions the software needs to answer; include the domain concepts and distinctions that help answer them, rather than attempting to reproduce everything that exists.
For example, software that processes orders may need to represent customers, orders, and order lines. A shipping application may also need delivery addresses and shipment status. A reporting tool could treat some of those details differently because its purpose is different. None of these models is a complete account of reality; each is useful if it captures what matters for its job.
How are classes and objects different?
In UML, a classifier describes a set of objects. A class is a familiar kind of classifier: it defines properties and operations shared by instances. An object is an individual instance, with a particular state and relationships to other objects. Its state is expressed through values of its properties.

The identifiers and names in this example are illustrative, not prescribed by UML. The distinction is the important part: a class describes a kind of thing; an object is one particular thing of that kind.
What belongs in a useful domain model?
Martin Fowler describes a domain model as an object model of a domain that incorporates both behavior and data, with interconnected objects representing meaningful individuals. Those concepts can exist at different scales: a model might include a corporation, a customer, an order, or a single line on an order form, depending on the software’s purpose.

Choose concepts by relevance, not by grammar
A noun in a description does not automatically deserve its own class. Ask whether the concept needs its own identity, state, relationships, or behavior to satisfy a requirement. A product name might simply be text in one application; in another, a product needs a distinct identity, price history, and inventory relationships. This is a design inference from purpose-driven abstraction, not a formal UML rule.
Keep data and behavior connected where it helps
If an object owns information and performs actions that meaningfully use or protect that information, keeping them together can make responsibilities easier to understand. For example, an order might calculate its total or enforce whether it can be cancelled. The exact division of responsibilities depends on requirements; the model should clarify the domain rather than add structure for its own sake.

Represent relationships that matter
Objects can be linked to other objects. In an order model, an order may be associated with one customer and several order lines. Such links communicate how the represented concepts relate. Include relationships that the software needs to store, navigate, validate, or explain; omitting irrelevant real-world connections keeps the model focused.
How should you decide what the model needs to say?
- State the purpose. Write down the user or system questions the software must answer, such as “Can this order be shipped?” or “Which items are included?”
- Identify candidate concepts. Look for important individuals, categories, events, and processes in the domain, without treating every mentioned noun as a class.
- Choose relevant state and relationships. For each candidate, ask what information must be retained and what links are needed to answer the stated questions.
- Assign behavior where it clarifies responsibility. Identify actions and rules the software must perform, then decide which objects should own or coordinate them.
- Review the model against its purpose. Remove details that do not help meet requirements, and add distinctions that the software would otherwise be unable to express.
When comparing two possible models for the same scenario, consider whether each meets the requirements, makes responsibilities and relationships clear, can accommodate relevant changes, and adds a reasonable amount of implementation complexity. These are practical design criteria, not a published scoring system or benchmark.

How can UML communicate an object-oriented model?
The Object Management Group says UML helps people “specify, visualize, and document models of software systems, including their structure and design.” UML is a language for communicating models, not a requirement that every object-oriented design be drawn before it can be implemented.
Use a view suited to the question
- Class diagrams show types and structural relationships, making them useful for discussing the shape of a design.
- Object diagrams show a snapshot of particular instances and links, which can make a concrete example easier to inspect.
- Behavioral views help when the important question concerns interaction, activity, or how state changes over time.
OMG’s UML overview identifies class, object, component, and deployment diagrams as structural diagram types. Its specification also treats classifiers, events, and behaviors as distinct categories of model element: events describe possible occurrences, while behaviors describe possible executions. Choose a diagram based on what you need to explain, rather than trying to place every aspect of a system in one picture.

UML is built around object-oriented concepts such as classes and operations and is a natural fit for object-oriented languages. However, OMG also says UML can model applications that are not object-oriented. The modelling language and the programming paradigm are related, but they are not identical.
Why is a model an abstraction rather than a replica?
A real domain contains more detail than any software model needs to represent. A customer, for instance, has a life beyond an order-processing system; that system may only need a customer identifier, a contact address, and order history. Another application may require different details. The right model is the one that preserves the distinctions necessary for its purpose without carrying irrelevant complexity.
This selectivity is not a flaw. It is how a model stays understandable and useful. If the problem changes, the model may need to change too; its adequacy is judged against the requirements and point of view it was designed to serve.
