Mobile remote deposit is a bank or credit union service that lets you submit a paper check electronically through its mobile app, usually by photographing the check with a phone. It is commonly called mobile check deposit and is one consumer form of remote deposit capture (RDC). You do not need to visit a branch or ATM, but submitting a check does not necessarily mean it has been accepted or that its funds are ready to spend.
How mobile remote deposit works
You open your financial institution’s mobile banking app, follow its instructions to capture images of the check, and submit them electronically. The app and account terms determine which checks are eligible, how to endorse them, and what images or information are required.
The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) describes remote deposit capture more broadly as a way for a financial institution to receive digital information from deposit documents captured at a remote location. A phone-based check deposit is one version of that process. RDC can make depositing more convenient, while also bringing risks beyond traditional in-person deposit delivery. What mobile remote deposit does—and does not—mean
- It is an electronic way to submit a check. You use the institution’s app instead of handing the paper check to a teller or depositing it at an ATM.
- It does not guarantee immediate access to the money. A submitted deposit may still be pending, subject to a hold, or otherwise not yet available to spend. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) notes that the timing for mobile check deposits can differ from other deposit methods. - It does not work under one universal set of rules. Institutions set their own requirements, including eligible check types, deposit limits, cutoff times, endorsement instructions, and funds-availability policies.
Check your institution’s rules before submitting a check
Look in your bank or credit union’s app and account terms for the current requirements. Confirm:

- Whether mobile deposit is available for your account and whether this type of check is eligible.
- Any per-check or daily deposit limit and applicable submission cutoff time.
- The endorsement wording the institution requires.
- Whether a fee applies, and when deposited funds are expected to become available.
There is no single national list of eligible check types, standard mobile deposit limit, universally required endorsement phrase, or guaranteed release time. The CFPB cautions that mobile deposit timing may differ by institution, so general check-deposit examples should not be treated as a promise about a particular photo deposit. Use your institution’s current policy for the answer that applies to your account.
Endorse and retain the paper check as instructed
Follow the app’s current instructions for signing or endorsing the check. The CFPB explains that signing the back and writing “for deposit only” is a restrictive endorsement intended to limit the check to deposit into the payee’s account. That guidance does not establish that the same wording is required for every mobile deposit. CFPB: What does it mean for a check to be indorsed “for deposit only”?

Keep track of the check so you do not submit it again. Retain the paper original until the deposit has posted and any applicable hold has expired. The deposit is made through your institution’s mobile banking app, using a mobile device to capture the check images the app requests. The cited consumer guidance does not establish a need to buy a new phone or a dedicated scanner.
