Accepting mobile payments can give restaurant guests a convenient way to pay, but it is best treated as an additional choice—not a replacement for cards, cash, or staff-assisted service. Whether it is worthwhile depends on your customers and service style, compatibility with your existing POS and processor, and the total cost of accepting the transactions.
What counts as a mobile payment?
Here, mobile payment means a guest initiates payment with a phone or another mobile device, most commonly by tapping a digital wallet on a contactless-capable terminal. That is different from scanning a QR code to order or pay, placing an order in a restaurant app, or tapping a physical contactless card. The distinction matters because those methods can use different checkout workflows and may be classified differently by a processor.
Some industry survey results group mobile and contactless payments together. They indicate customer interest in the broader category, not necessarily demand for phone wallets alone.

In its 2024 Restaurant Technology Trends research, the U.S. National Restaurant Association reported that 79% of surveyed consumers preferred contactless or mobile payments. It also reported that 73% opted for digital-wallet options, naming Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, Google Wallet, PayPal, and Venmo as examples. These are reported survey preferences, not measured transaction shares or evidence of increased restaurant sales. The association’s 2024 report summary says the consumer research reflects responses from more than 1,000 adults.

These results support offering the option where it fits; they do not mean every guest wants to pay by phone. Keeping several payment methods available lets guests use the method that works for them.
A potential fit for counter service and off-premises orders
Payment by phone may feel natural where guests already interact with digital ordering or a counter terminal. The association’s 2024 technology research reported that 68% of limited-service customers and 62% of full-service customers were willing to handle a bill via contactless or mobile payment. Those are willingness figures, not actual adoption rates. The same association report describes greater technology willingness in limited-service and delivery settings than in some full-service experiences. Its Restaurant Technology Landscape Report 2024 provides the segment context.

Flexible payment workflows
A POS setup that accommodates multiple payment preferences can support different situations, such as paying at a counter or settling a bill at a table. What it can handle depends on the restaurant’s terminal, POS software, and payment processor. The National Restaurant Association’s overview of POS payment systems discusses the role of payment technology in serving different scenarios; it does not establish that every system supports every wallet or workflow.
Digital receipts can reduce paper handling
Some payment flows can offer a digital receipt instead of a printed one, which may reduce paper use and handling of shared pens in that particular transaction. It is an operational option, not a general health or safety guarantee. The association’s guidance on no-contact commerce includes digital receipts among the options restaurants may consider.

What are the drawbacks and tradeoffs?
Processing fees do not disappear
A phone wallet still involves payment processing. Mobile acceptance does not by itself make a transaction free or cheaper than another payment method. The National Restaurant Association describes credit-card processing as the third-largest operating expense for most restaurants on its swipe-fee advocacy page. That is the association’s characterization, not a fee estimate for an individual restaurant. Its swipe-fee page explains the association’s position.
Costs and routing rules vary by market and payment type. A Reserve Bank of Australia analysis published in September 2022 illustrates how merchant costs can depend on payment arrangements and jurisdiction; it should not be used as a U.S. restaurant fee estimate. Read the RBA’s analysis of card-payment costs for merchants. Ask your own processor how wallet transactions are classified and priced, and compare the full rate schedule rather than assuming a phone tap costs less.

Hardware and integration may take work
Tap-to-pay wallets require a compatible contactless terminal, and the POS and processor must support the intended payment methods and transaction flow. Before buying or upgrading equipment, confirm support for settlement, receipts, refunds, and tipping, as well as any software or integration costs. Compatibility is provider- and setup-specific; the association’s payment-system guidance is not a universal compatibility guarantee.
It may not suit every hospitality style
In full-service dining, guests may prefer an employee to bring the bill, explain a charge, or assist with payment. A mobile option can coexist with that service instead of replacing it. The association quotes Rob Conti, Senior Vice President of Information Technology at First Watch: “Technology allows us to serve more demand without giving up our commitment to hospitality.” The association’s account of automated ordering and payment provides the context for his comment.

- Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one low rate
- No hidden fees and no long-term contracts
- Mobile card reader that accepts payments anywhere & anytime
- Use the free SumUp App on your smartphone or tablet to start accepting transactions
- Simply pay 2.6% +10 per in-person transaction
Some guests will need another way to pay
A guest may lack a supported device or wallet, have a depleted battery, or be unable to complete a mobile transaction. The available survey findings do not quantify how often these situations occur. Retain practical alternatives and make clear how a guest can get staff help.
Security depends on the implementation
Do not assume that accepting mobile payments automatically reduces fraud or is inherently safer than other payment methods. The sources cited here do not provide comparative fraud rates or establish that every wallet, terminal, and restaurant setup has the same protections. Ask the provider what security and privacy controls apply to your specific system.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to decide whether to add mobile payments
- Start with your service segment and customers. Consider whether guests mainly order at a counter, dine at tables, or use delivery and pickup. The 2024 National Restaurant Association figures indicate reported willingness, not what your own customers will use. Its 2024 discussion of operator technology investment offers additional industry context, but does not prove that mobile payments alone create a competitive advantage.
- Check the equipment you already have. Ask your payment processor whether your current terminal accepts the contactless wallets guests request and whether your POS supports the required transaction flow. If new hardware is needed, verify that an NFC-enabled terminal or reader is compatible with your POS and processor before purchase.
- Get the complete cost picture. Request the applicable transaction rates and any hardware, software, or integration charges. Ask how mobile-wallet transactions are classified, and compare those terms with the methods guests already use.
- Walk through the whole transaction. Confirm how the system handles tips, split checks, refunds, receipts, settlement, and staff assistance—not just the initial tap.
- Keep a fallback and evaluate a pilot. Retain non-mobile payment options. If you pilot phone payments, choose a setting where the method fits naturally and compare transaction mix, guest feedback, checkout friction, and costs with a baseline. This is a practical way to assess fit, not a result guaranteed by industry survey findings.
The association reported in 2024 that 76% of operators said technology gives them a competitive edge. That finding is about technology broadly, not proof that mobile payments alone produce an edge. As Hudson Riehle, the association’s Senior Vice President of Research & Knowledge, put it: “Understanding which technologies customers in each segment would like to have, really want, and consider essential, provides operators with substantial opportunities to enhance the customer experience, amplify marketing and operate more efficiently.” The association’s report summary contains the survey findings.
