A mobile Internet device (MID) is a compact portable computer designed chiefly for wireless Internet access. It is a narrower, historically variable label—not a current, universally standardized device class. A smartphone or tablet can be a mobile device without necessarily fitting a particular definition of MID.
What does MID stand for?
MID stands for mobile Internet device. The term describes a small, portable computer intended for tasks such as browsing the Internet and sending or receiving messages. The emphasis is on wireless connectivity and a compact form, rather than on a single operating system or connection type.
Definitions differ on exactly what counts as small. The Office québécois de la langue française (OQLF), in an entry last updated in 2009, describes a very small, generally keyboard-free, tablet-shaped computer with a touchscreen diagonal that “does not greatly exceed 4 inches (10.16 cm).” It places the device by size between a smartphone and an ultramobile personal computer. Oxford’s American dictionary gives a broader relative description: a handheld computer larger than a smartphone but smaller than a tablet PC, used mainly for personal Internet services. It does not specify a screen-size limit. Oxford Advanced American Dictionary’s MID entry

Because these definitions set different boundaries, the 4-inch figure is a detail of OQLF’s 2009 description, not a universal technical requirement for every device called a MID.
Is a mobile Internet device the same as a mobile device?
No. Mobile device is the broader category. NIST defines one as a portable computing device with a small form factor, designed for wireless operation, with local data storage and its own power source. Its examples include smartphones, tablets, and e-readers. NIST CSRC glossary

Does “mobile Internet” mean cellular data?
Not necessarily. Internet access on a portable device can use a mobile cellular network or another wireless network, such as Wi-Fi. The International Telecommunication Union’s household ICT definitions include both access routes and list phones, tablets, portable computers, and other devices as possible means of access. ITU ICT household indicators: Definitions (2022 edition)
GSMA’s report excerpt also describes mobile Internet access as wireless Internet access through devices including mobile phones, smartphones, USB wireless modems, and tablets. GSMA, “Accelerating Digital Literacy” (2015)

In this context, “mobile” points to portable wireless access; it does not by itself promise a built-in cellular connection. A device may reach the Internet over Wi-Fi instead.
How should you understand the MID label?
Read MID as a descriptive category whose meaning depends on the source and period, rather than as a precise modern specification. The OQLF entry emphasizes a very small touchscreen device, usually without a keyboard, and simple Internet use; Oxford describes a handheld device in the size range between a smartphone and a tablet, focused on personal Internet services. Neither description establishes a single boundary accepted across all current products.

For clarity, use mobile device when you mean the broad group of portable wireless computers. Use mobile Internet device when discussing the historical category, and identify the definition if a precise size or feature boundary matters.
