Mobile app testing is a repeatable way to check that the tasks people rely on work across the operating systems, devices, network conditions, and accessibility needs your app supports. Start by writing down the app’s most important user journeys and what should happen at each step; explore them manually, record defects clearly, then automate stable checks that need to run after every change. Testing reduces uncertainty—it does not prove an app is bug-free.
How do I test a mobile app?
Begin with what the app must let a person do, not with a long list of devices or tools. Choose important journeys—such as signing in, completing the app’s core task, handling an error, and seeing saved data after reopening—and define the expected outcome for each.
- Set the scope. Identify whether you are testing Android, Apple platforms, or both, and which OS versions and device types the app claims to support. Select a practical range based on your users and the risks of each feature; you do not need to test every possible model-and-version combination.
- Write a test case for each journey. Record the starting conditions, steps, expected result, and useful edge cases. Include invalid input, a denied permission, an interruption such as switching apps, and recovery after connectivity returns where those situations apply.
- Explore manually. Follow the cases and try realistic variations. Change screen size, language, permissions, and network state; background and resume the app; and look for confusing or inaccessible interactions that a scripted test may not reveal.
- Record defects so someone can reproduce them. Include the build or app version, device model, OS version, network state, steps, expected behavior, and actual behavior. Add a screenshot or screen recording when it helps explain the problem, but do not substitute an image for the reproduction steps.
- Automate repeatable checks. Add tests for stable logic and important component boundaries, then automate a smaller number of high-value UI journeys. Prioritize common tasks and past defects.
- Retest changes and regressions. Reproduce a reported issue in its recorded environment, check the fix, and rerun relevant tests. State which environments and journeys you did test, along with meaningful gaps.
What to put in a test case
- Preconditions: account state, permissions, saved data, and other setup required.
- Steps: actions in the order a person takes them.
- Expected result: the observable outcome, including error or recovery behavior.
- Variations: the edge cases most relevant to the journey, such as invalid input or a denied permission.
What should I test in an Android or iOS app?
Cover the app’s core tasks and the conditions that can change their outcome. Android’s testing guidance treats testing as including both manual exploration and automation, and includes accessibility among the concerns to check. See Android Developers’ testing fundamentals.
Core behavior and data
- Complete the main task from a fresh or representative starting state.
- Try invalid, incomplete, and boundary inputs; verify that messages are clear and data is not silently corrupted.
- Check saved information after navigating away, closing and reopening the app, or signing in again if relevant.
- Test important error paths, including server or connectivity failures, and confirm the user can recover.
Permissions, interruptions, and connectivity
- Test both granting and denying permissions the app needs, and verify the experience if permission is later changed in system settings.
- Interrupt a journey by switching apps, receiving a notification, locking the screen, or rotating the device where supported; check that the app resumes in a sensible state.
- Try relevant network conditions, including a lost connection and recovery. Verify that the app does not claim an action succeeded when it did not.
Accessibility and security are separate work
Complete real tasks using the assistive technologies and settings relevant to the platform, rather than relying only on visual inspection. Apple recommends checking main tasks with VoiceOver, Voice Control, and Switch Control; some checks, including VoiceOver, require a physical device. See Apple’s accessibility testing guidance.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
A functional test is not a security assessment. For a deliberately scoped security review, OWASP’s Mobile Application Security Testing Guide overview describes the guide’s role, while OWASP MASVS assessment guidance addresses verification. OWASP cautions that automated tools alone cannot complete MASVS verification; an app’s design and context matter.
Can I test an app without a real phone?
Yes. Virtual devices are a practical place to begin: Android Studio provides Android Virtual Devices (AVDs), and Xcode can run apps in simulated devices. You can use them to exercise different OS and device configurations without owning every device. Apple’s documentation explicitly describes building and running on a simulated or physical device: Running your app on simulated or physical devices.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Virtual devices are not a complete substitute for physical hardware. They may not reproduce real-device performance or every hardware feature. Add checks on representative physical devices when a feature depends on hardware or when you need more realistic release confidence. OWASP’s Android security testing guidance describes Android Studio, Android SDK platform tools, and AVD as useful tools; it notes that real devices provide a more realistic environment while emulators make it easier to change SDK versions or create multiple devices. See OWASP Android Security Testing.
| Choice | Useful for | Limit to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Android AVD or Xcode simulator | Convenient checks across selected OS and device configurations; quick setup and repeatable runs. | Does not reproduce all physical hardware behavior or real-device performance. |
| Physical device | Verifying hardware-dependent features and checking behavior in a more realistic environment. | Fewer configurations may be readily available than in a virtual setup. |
Choose a representative mix based on supported platforms, the devices your audience uses, and feature risk. Start with virtual devices for breadth and routine checks; use physical devices for hardware-dependent behavior and release validation where practical. An unlocked Android phone can serve as a physical test device, but buying one is not required to begin.

How do I automate mobile app testing?
Automate checks that are stable, valuable, and repeated often. Keep manual exploration for discovery and usability, and use automated tests to make consistent checks easier to rerun after code changes.
Build coverage in layers
- Unit tests: check isolated logic quickly, such as input validation or calculations.
- Integration tests: verify important boundaries between app components or services.
- UI tests: automate a smaller set of complete user journeys that protect common tasks and known regressions.
Apple’s Xcode testing guidance recommends a mix of test types: many fast isolated unit tests, fewer integration tests, and UI tests for common use cases. In Xcode 16 and later, Swift Testing is included for unit tests; XCTest remains available for UI automation with XCUIAutomation. Read Apple’s Xcode testing documentation.

Keep automated tests useful
- Start with a journey that matters to users or a defect that has returned before.
- Make setup and expected outcomes explicit so failures point to a meaningful problem.
- Prefer reliable checks over a large suite of brittle scripts; update tests when intended behavior changes.
- When a test fails, distinguish an app defect from a setup, environment, or test-script problem before changing production code.
How to use ScreenshotNeo for website screenshots
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers, made by Yorker Media. It captures web pages, not native Android or iOS app screens, so it does not replace the mobile testing workflow above. It can be useful when your app testing work also needs a screenshot of a web page or web-based flow. Details are at ScreenshotNeo.
Or skip the browser setup:
Make one GET request with a URL to receive an image or PDF. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot:

Common mobile testing problems and fixes
- A bug cannot be reproduced: the report may omit a relevant condition. Capture the build, device, OS, network state, permissions, and exact steps, then repeat those conditions.
- A test passes on a simulator but fails on a phone: investigate hardware, performance, and environment differences. Verify hardware-dependent behavior on a representative physical device.
- A UI test fails intermittently: check whether setup or timing is unstable, whether the app is waiting on network or system state, and whether the expected result is genuinely deterministic. Make the preconditions and completion signal explicit.
- A permission-related journey breaks: test both allowed and denied states, including changing the permission later, rather than validating only the first-run grant.
- The suite misses a usability problem: use exploratory manual testing and complete tasks with relevant assistive technologies; scripted success alone does not establish that a flow is understandable or accessible.
How should I report test coverage?
Describe the tests you actually ran: app build, platform and OS versions, device types, network or permission conditions that mattered, journeys covered, and failures found. Note significant areas you did not cover. A passing set of checks is evidence about those checks and environments, not proof that the app has no defects.
