What a mobile app screenshot generator does
Most generators combine four jobs that would otherwise be repetitive:
- Import: Bring in screenshots from a simulator, physical device, or design file.
- Compose: Place each screen in a phone or tablet frame, set a background, and control margins, alignment, and ordering.
- Explain: Add short headlines or captions that point to one useful capability per image.
- Export: Produce PNG or JPEG files at the dimensions and orientation needed by a storefront.

Screenies describes AI-assisted Apple and Google Play screenshot creation with device frames and store-oriented exports. Those are vendor-stated capabilities, not independent quality or acceptance guarantees. Whichever tool you choose, the source screen must be real and the exported file must be checked manually.
Start with the store requirements
Apple App Store
App Store Connect accepts at least one and at most ten screenshots for a listing. Accepted formats are JPEG, JPG, and PNG, and Apple’s specification says images cannot contain an alpha channel or transparency. Apple publishes separate accepted dimensions for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, Apple Vision Pro, and Apple Watch. Select the exact device family and model in Apple’s current screenshot specification table before designing.

For a concrete example, Apple lists 13-inch iPad portrait options of 2064 × 2752 and 2048 × 2732 for applicable models, and screenshots are required when the app runs on iPad. Do not treat those values as universal iPad dimensions; supported models and requirements differ.
If the interface is identical across device sizes and localizations, Apple says you can provide the highest required resolution and let the system scale it down. Use Media Manager when you need to upload specific sizes or localized sets. After a version is submitted and approved, changing its screenshots requires a new version.
Google Play
Google Play Console requires screenshots in PNG or JPEG, with a maximum of 8 MB per image and an 8:5 aspect ratio according to its help guidance. Confirm the current requirements in Play Console for the target device category before exporting. Google Play’s presentation order can also place a preview video before screenshots, so sequence the images for the browsing context rather than copying an App Store order blindly.
Why a preset is not proof of compliance
A generator’s “App Store” or “Google Play” preset can be outdated, use the wrong device family, or export with transparency. Treat it as a starting canvas. Inspect the finished files for:

- Pixel width and height, orientation, and aspect ratio.
- PNG or JPEG format and file size.
- Opaque background where Apple disallows alpha.
- Readable text at the listing’s display scale.
- Accurate UI, captions, device frames, and feature ordering.
A practical screenshot-generator workflow
- List release targets. Record storefront, phone and tablet support, portrait or landscape orientation, and every localization. Include iPad if the app runs there.
- Capture production-like screens. Use realistic data, final iconography, and the same navigation state a reviewer or customer will see. Remove debug banners and test accounts.
- Choose a narrative. Put the clearest value proposition first, then show the shortest path to important features. Give each image one idea.
- Build a reusable layout. Lock frame position, headline area, type scale, colors, and safe margins. Keep captions away from controls and text that is part of the app UI.
- Localize deliberately. Duplicate the layout for each language, then allow for longer words and different line breaks. Never let translated copy cover a tap target or make one locale materially harder to read.
- Export per platform. Generate separate files for Apple device families and Google Play’s aspect-ratio and size rules. Keep an organized naming scheme such as
ios_iphone_en_01.png. - Validate files outside the generator. Check dimensions, alpha, format, byte size, and ordering with an image viewer or script. Re-open compressed files to catch clipping and color changes.
- Preview the listing. Apple provides an App Store Connect Preview tool. Use it to inspect how assets appear beside the app name, icon, and other media. Correct any caption that implies functionality the app does not provide.
Design choices that survive store-size viewing
Use real screens, not promises
Device frames and marketing copy should clarify the experience, not invent one. Apple’s asset guidance points developers to App Review Guidelines section 2.3 on accurate metadata. A headline such as “Export a PDF in one tap” is appropriate only if that action exists in the captured build.
Keep the sequence scannable
Lead with the screen that explains the app fastest. Follow with an outcome, a differentiating workflow, and supporting features. Use short, high-contrast headlines and leave enough margin for thumbnail viewing. Avoid filling every available pixel with copy.
Respect orientation and safe areas
Do not rotate a portrait capture into a landscape composition merely to fit a template. Keep system bars, camera cutouts, and app chrome consistent with the actual device. If a frame hides a control, choose another crop or frame.

Apple rejects transparency
Inspect the PNG’s alpha channel and flatten the composition onto an opaque background. Re-export as PNG or JPEG without transparent pixels.

Google Play rejects the file or shows a warning
Check that the image is PNG or JPEG, below 8 MB, and uses the required 8:5 aspect ratio. Do not reuse an Apple device preset without recalculating the canvas.
Text is unreadable in the listing
Open the asset at a thumbnail-like size, shorten the headline, increase contrast, and move detail into the app UI rather than the marketing layer.

The frame covers important UI
Change the crop, frame angle, or spacing. Never hide a control that the caption claims to show.
Localized versions drift
Use a locked master layout, then adjust each language’s text box rather than shrinking every translation until it fits. Compare image order and filenames before upload.

The generated screen is outdated
Regenerate from the current build and repeat validation. A visually polished image that no longer matches the shipped interface can create an accurate-metadata problem.

- Every supported store and device family has the required assets.
- Apple set contains one to ten screenshots in an accepted format and no alpha channel.
- Google Play files are PNG or JPEG, no larger than 8 MB, and 8:5.
- Dimensions and orientation match the current official tables.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a generator create screenshots without a running app?
It can compose supplied images or designs, but it cannot prove that an interface exists. Capture screens from a working build whenever the listing describes actual functionality.
Should I use the same images on the App Store and Google Play?
