The MNT Reform Next is no longer merely a laptop announced for future crowdfunding: as of October 3, 2026, Crowd Supply lists it for preorder, with current orders scheduled to ship October 23 or October 30, depending on configuration and color. Prices range from $1,249 to $1,749, and no configuration includes an AC adapter. Its appeal is unusual openness and serviceability; its compromises include a premium price and an ARM processor that may not suit every Linux application.
What is the MNT Reform Next?
The Reform Next is a 12.5-inch Debian Linux laptop designed by MNT Research around public hardware sources, modular components and user repair. MNT described it in its 2024 announcement as “A future proof laptop with a retro futuristic aesthetic.” That is a design ambition, not a guarantee that the machine will remain compatible with every future component or application.
Unlike a conventional sealed laptop, the Reform Next splits its motherboard into specialized boards and uses a replaceable processor module. Its chassis is CNC-milled, bead-blasted and anodized 6061 aluminum in the production design. Crowd Supply lists black, purple and raw-silver finishes.

| Configuration | Memory and storage | Included items | Listed price | Current listed shipping |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reform Next | 16 GB RAM; 256 GB eMMC | No AC adapter listed | $1,249 | October 23, 2026 |
| Super Reform Next | 32 GB RAM; 500 GB NVMe SSD | No AC adapter listed | $1,549 | Black: October 23, 2026; purple: October 30, 2026 |
| Hyper Reform Next | 32 GB RAM; 1 TB NVMe SSD | Piñatex sleeve and printed handbook; no AC adapter listed | $1,749 | October 23 or October 30, 2026, depending on color |
You will need to budget separately for a compatible USB-C power adapter: the product cards say an AC adapter is not included. The product information names 65W USB-C PD chargers, including the Anker Prime 67W GaN with EU plug and Ugreen 65W USB-C PD with US/JP plug.
The campaign is funded, but funding is not the same as delivery. Crowd Supply recorded $587,027 raised against a $100,000 goal, with 374 backers, on February 7, 2025. MNT’s January 2026 update said it was ordering parts for the first batch and had targeted an April 2026 shipment. The live campaign’s later October dates are the relevant estimates for orders placed now. Crowd Supply says final assembly, quality assurance and packaging take place in Berlin, with Mouser handling fulfillment after production; component shortages remain a delivery risk.

Hardware: an RK3588-based ARM Linux laptop
Processor and memory
The central module uses an eight-core Rockchip RK3588 processor with a Mali G610 GPU. The laptop is offered with 16 or 32 GB of LPDDR4 RAM. MNT’s 200-pin SODIMM processor module is designed to be exchanged or reused across the classic Reform and Pocket Reform platforms as well.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThat ARM architecture matters for software compatibility. Debian GNU/Linux is the stated operating system, with Sway, GNOME and KDE listed as desktop options. Applications distributed for Linux on ARM may work directly, while software available only for x86 PCs may need a compatible alternative or an emulation or translation layer; compatibility and performance depend on the specific application. Other operating systems using EDK2 UEFI are in development, not a stated ready-to-use alternative. MNT lists uses such as programming, graphics work, video editing, gaming and emulation, but those are manufacturer use cases, not independent benchmark results.

Display, keyboard and pointing device
The built-in display is a 12.5-inch matte IPS panel with 1920 × 1080 resolution. MNT says dual-screen use has been tested with a 1440p, 120 Hz display; that test does not establish performance for every external monitor or workload.
The 80-key keyboard uses Kailh Choc Brown mechanical switches, supports N-key rollover and has customizable RGB backlighting. An RP2040 controller, OLED system-control display and open firmware are part of the keyboard design. The keyboard can also be removed and used as a standalone USB-C keyboard. The classic Reform’s trackball is replaced by a multitouch glass trackpad with three low-profile Cherry MX ULP mechanical buttons.

Storage and ports
Storage depends on configuration: the base model uses 256 GB eMMC, while the other listed models use NVMe SSDs. The laptop also has a 2242-size M.2 NVMe slot supporting drives up to 2 TB, a microSD slot and internal microSD Express. Full-disk encryption with LUKS is possible.
Modular port boards provide USB-C, USB-A, HDMI, audio and Gigabit Ethernet through an ix Industrial connector. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth hardware is removable. Because the Ethernet jack is ix Industrial rather than standard RJ45, a compatible ix Industrial-to-RJ45 adapter is needed to connect a conventional Ethernet cable.

How repairable and open is it?
The design’s practical difference is that several important assemblies are replaceable rather than permanently integrated. MNT says hardware design sources are public; that supports inspection and modification, although it does not by itself mean every repair is simple, every replacement part is always in stock or every modification is covered by a warranty.
- Processor: the 200-pin module can be swapped, including with compatible modules for classic Reform and Pocket Reform systems.
- Ports and wireless: specialized port boards and the Wi-Fi/Bluetooth hardware are removable.
- Storage: the M.2 NVMe drive is replaceable, and the system includes removable-card storage options.
- Keyboard: the assembly is removable and usable over USB-C; replacement Kailh Choc Brown or White switches are documented.
- Display: the display is among the serviceable or replaceable components in the modular design.
- Battery: both packs and individual compatible cells are intended to be serviceable.
The handbook documents compatible 18650 cells and individual cell replacement. It explicitly says to use only LiFePO4 cells with the Reform Next; do not substitute ordinary Li-ion 18650 cells. The packs run in parallel and contain four cells each, eight total. Crowd Supply lists 16,000 mAh total capacity and an approximate five-hour runtime, both figures from MNT Research’s 2025 product information, not independent battery testing. MNT says Li-ion packs could reach more than eight hours, but that option remains in development and is not the battery to use in the current system.
Who should consider buying one?
A strong fit
- Linux users who value public design files, firmware access and the ability to repair or modify hardware.
- People who want a mechanical keyboard, silent operation and a laptop whose processor module and other assemblies can be replaced.
- Developers, hobbyists and administrators whose everyday tools are available for ARM Linux or run on remote systems.
Think carefully if
- You depend on x86-only applications, device drivers or games and have not confirmed an acceptable ARM-compatible option.
- You prioritize low upfront cost, thin-and-light portability or predictable delivery over repairability and openness.
- You expect a standard RJ45 socket or an included charger: neither is provided as described in the campaign listing.
There is not enough product information here to make a like-for-like value or portability comparison with Framework or conventional Linux laptops: comparable weight, charger inclusion, delivery certainty and full configuration details are not established across alternatives. The Reform Next makes most sense when its specific modular design is worth paying extra for, rather than as a default choice for every Linux buyer.
