To use Mnemosyne as Hermes Agent’s external memory provider, install and register it in the Python environment used by the running gateway, set memory.provider to mnemosyne, restart the correct runtime, then test an actual memory write and recall. Docker deployments need extra care: keep the integration in persistent storage and restart the deployed service, not just the gateway.
Choose the installation path that matches your Hermes deployment
Mnemosyne integrates with Hermes as a plugin implementing the Hermes MemoryProvider interface. The right install method depends on where Hermes runs and which Python interpreter its gateway uses; a shell’s default Python may not be that interpreter. The Mnemosyne documentation calls its integration guide “the canonical Hermes setup guide.” Mnemosyne’s Hermes integration guide and project repository were checked on October 4, 2026; setup instructions and Hermes behavior can change, so confirm them against the versions you run.
- Persistent Docker or image deployment: use the side-virtual-environment wrapper installation below, keeping that environment on persistent storage.
- Local Hermes installation: install and register through the selected Hermes environment and the active user’s home or profile.
- Standalone library use or source development: these are separate project paths; the steps here target the Hermes integration.
Install Mnemosyne in a persistent Docker deployment
The integration guide says the official Hermes container’s mounted home is /opt/data/, rather than ~/.hermes/. Other deployments may use a different home or mount: substitute the actual persistent path and the Python executable used by the running gateway. Use the same Python major and minor version as that gateway.

Install the packages into that environment, then register Mnemosyne in wrapper mode:

Select Mnemosyne as the provider:
hermes config set memory.provider mnemosyne -
Restart the container or Compose service using that deployment’s tooling. The wrapper installer registers the plugin under
$HERMES_HOME/plugins; for this installation path, the guide says not to add a separateplugins.enabledentry.
These commands illustrate the guide’s path for the official container. If your image uses another mount, home, or Python path, update the commands accordingly. See the integration guide’s deployment instructions.

Install on a local Hermes setup
Use the Python environment selected for Hermes and the active user account. Do not copy a home directory or interpreter path from another account or machine.

Install the provider packages in the Hermes environment:
pip install 'mnemosyne-memory[embeddings]' mnemosyne-hermes -
Register the provider, then select it in Hermes:
python -m mnemosyne.install hermes config set memory.provider mnemosyne -
Restart the gateway:
hermes gateway restart
The standalone provider installer is also available as mnemosyne-hermes install. Follow the integration guide’s OS-specific recipe if Hermes does not discover the plugin through the route above. If the Hermes virtual environment has no pip, the guide describes installing with uv pip install --python <hermes-python> ..., replacing the bracketed text with the actual Hermes interpreter path. Choose the package extras you need
The base package can be installed without optional extras. The extras change the dependency profile, not a documented performance guarantee:

The Mnemosyne repository estimates the [embeddings] profile at approximately 800 MB; the repository does not state a year for that estimate. Treat it as a project estimate, not an independent benchmark or guaranteed installed size. The setup material establishes no controlled comparison of performance, memory quality, or price between these profiles. Check the project repository for current package details.

For native Windows, the integration guide recommends persistent wrapper mode. It warns that explicit symlink mode can require Developer Mode or an elevated shell. Local-LLM dependencies may also need compatible wheels or a native build toolchain, so start with [embeddings] unless you need local-LLM consolidation. See the Windows-specific integration notes.

Activate the provider and handle desktop settings carefully
Set the provider with the Hermes command:
hermes config set memory.provider mnemosyneThere is a version-sensitive configuration caveat for provider-specific desktop settings. The integration guide says Hermes’s declared provider schemas persist non-secret fields in provider-specific JSON or a host store, and currently cannot target memory.mnemosyne through config.yaml. Its documented interim options are the interactive setup command or setting a value directly:
hermes memory setup
hermes config set memory.mnemosyne.<key> <value>Use the exact key and value required by your setting, and verify this behavior against the Hermes distribution you run; upstream configuration behavior may change. The integration guide documents the current caveat.

After activating the provider, start a new session or restart the gateway. In Docker or Compose, restart the deployed service. Then inspect the provider, tool inventory, and Mnemosyne statistics:

hermes tools list
mnemosyne statshermes memory status reports local provider registration and state; it does not establish that memory operations work end to end. The tool inventory can vary by installed version. To check function, use the installation guide’s approach: store a disposable test memory, then ask Hermes to recall it. If that round trip fails, the status output alone is not enough to establish why; confirm the gateway’s interpreter, plugin registration, configuration, and runtime restart before investigating further. The integration guide includes a functional check.
Know what Mnemosyne does in a Hermes session
The integration guide describes three lifecycle hooks: pre_llm_call injects relevant working-memory context; on_session_start initializes session-scoped state; and post_tool_call captures tool results when configured. The last behavior is conditional on configuration, so do not assume every tool result is captured automatically. See the integration guide for lifecycle details.
Disable Mnemosyne or roll back
To disable the external provider while leaving Hermes’s built-in memory active, run:
hermes memory offDo not use hermes tools disable memory for this purpose: the integration guide says that command disables the memory toolset, including provider tools. Check the guide’s rollback instructions for your installed version.
