Codon is a separate compiler for Python-like code—not an upgrade that makes the standard Python interpreter faster. MIT CSAIL reported in 2023 that Codon compiled roughly 10 genomics applications and ran them five to 10 times faster than their original hand-optimized implementations. That result applies to those applications and that comparison; it is not a general speed guarantee for Python programs.
What Codon changes
Ordinary Python commonly relies on runtime behavior: the interpreter executes code while resolving information such as types as the program runs. Codon takes a different route. It performs static type checking before execution, then compiles supported code into native machine code.
That design can make performance-oriented execution possible without first rewriting an application in another language. In MIT CSAIL’s 2023 report, MIT professor and CSAIL principal investigator Saman Amarasinghe described Codon as a way to use the same Python implementation and obtain performance comparable to rewriting in C. That is his view of the approach, not a guarantee for every program.
What the reported speedup means
MIT CSAIL’s March 14, 2023 report described roughly 10 commonly used genomics applications compiled with Codon. The reported five-to-10-times speedups were measured against those applications’ original hand-optimized implementations. The figure is therefore tied to a particular workload and baseline; it should not be presented as Codon making Python universally five to 10 times faster.

The report also discussed quantitative-finance applications and parallel backends for GPUs and multiple CPU cores. Those examples indicate the kinds of performance-sensitive uses the project targeted, but they do not expand the genomics benchmark result into a general comparison across workloads or hardware.
Why it does not run all Python unchanged
Codon’s static, bottom-up compilation approach differs from strategies that preserve more of Python’s dynamic behavior. That can enable static compilation techniques, but it also imposes compatibility limits. MIT’s 2023 account said Codon supported a subset of Python and did not yet cover all dynamic features or Python libraries.

Those qualifications matter in practice: a program may depend on dynamic language behavior or a library that the compiler does not support. The 2023 report does not establish Codon’s current release, supported platforms, installation process, or present-day compatibility list. Check the project’s current documentation for those details before evaluating it for a specific application.
Codon and the CPython JIT are different efforts
Codon is a separate compiler that accepts Python-like code and emits native machine code. CPython’s JIT, by contrast, is work on the standard Python implementation. Their results should not be compared as if they came from the same program, benchmark, hardware, or test setup.

In a March 23, 2026 Python Insider post, Ken Jin reported preliminary CPython 3.15 alpha JIT geometric-mean results: about 11–12% faster than the tail-calling interpreter on macOS AArch64 and 5–6% faster than the standard interpreter on x86_64 Linux. The post also reported a benchmark range from about a 20% slowdown to over 100% speedup, excluding one microbenchmark. These are preliminary, platform- and benchmark-specific CPython results—not a direct Codon comparison.

The Codon paper, “Codon: A Compiler for High-Performance Pythonic Applications and DSLs,” was written by Ariya Shajii, Gabriel Ramirez, Haris Smajlović, Jessica Ray, Bonnie Berger, Saman Amarasinghe, and Ibrahim Numanagić. It appeared in the proceedings of the 32nd ACM SIGPLAN International Conference on Compiler Construction in 2023. MIT’s publication record gives February 17, 2023, as the date issued for the final published version, and MIT CSAIL reported that the work was presented at the conference.
