MIT OpenCourseWare provides the materials for 6.0001 Introduction to Computer Science and Programming in Python free online. This is MIT’s undergraduate Fall 2016 course, aimed at people with little or no programming experience. It teaches computational problem solving through small programs and specifies Python 3.5—the version used in that historical offering, not a current Python setup guide.
What MIT 6.0001 is—and who it is for
MIT describes 6.0001 as an introduction for students with little or no programming experience. Its goal is to help learners understand how computation can be used to solve problems and gain confidence writing small programs that accomplish useful goals.
The Fall 2016 course was taught by Dr. Ana Bell, Prof. Eric Grimson, and Prof. John Guttag. The course page says, “The class uses the Python 3.5 programming language.” Treat that as the version used in this particular course offering; the available information does not establish that its materials have been updated for current Python releases.
What the course covers
The course overview groups its content into a progression from basic programming ideas to common data structures, software practices, and algorithms:
#1 Best Overall
- Spacious Design: Measuring 21.1" wide and 14.1" deep, our lap desk comfortably fits most laptops up to 15.6". Extra room for accessories ensures convenience.
- Enhanced Functionality: Packed with handy features, including a 5x9" precision tracking mouse pad and a built-in phone slot for seamless work or video calls. Plus, enjoy ergonomic support with the integrated cushioned wrist rest.
- Cool Comfort: Enjoy a stable surface with our lap desk's dual bolster cushion, designed for comfort and airflow, keeping your lap cool during extended use.
- Durable Surface: Work with confidence on our lap desk's solid surface, featuring a sleek black carbon color, ensuring optimal air circulation to prevent your laptop from overheating.
- On-the-Go Convenience: With an integrated handle and lightweight design (2.8 lbs), our lap desk is portable for travel or moving around the house, offering flexibility in any space.
- What computation is
- Branching and iteration
- String manipulation, guess and check, approximations, and bisection
- Decomposition, abstractions, and functions
- Tuples, lists, aliasing, mutability, and cloning
- Recursion and dictionaries
- Testing, debugging, exceptions, and assertions
- Object-oriented programming, Python classes, and inheritance
- Program efficiency, covered in two parts
- Searching and sorting
This makes 6.0001 more than a syntax overview: it introduces ways to break problems down, represent data, test code, and reason about program efficiency.
What materials are available
MIT OCW lists lecture notes, lecture videos, problem sets, and programming assignments with examples on the official 6.0001 course page. MIT OpenCourseWare describes its broader catalog as freely sharing materials from over 2,500 courses and materials; that figure describes the OCW site, not the number of resources in 6.0001.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
The course overview names John V. Guttag’s Introduction to Computation and Programming Using Python as a companion text. The course materials are listed separately on OCW, so the book is not presented as a requirement for accessing them.
How to continue after 6.0001
MIT presents 6.0002 Introduction to Computational Thinking and Data Science as the continuation of 6.0001. Its Fall 2016 page includes probability and statistics among its topic areas and lists notes, videos, problem sets, and programming assignments. It is the natural next course if you want to extend programming fundamentals toward computational thinking and data science.
