Five candidates are listed for Hinds County District Attorney in the November 3, 2026 special election: Gwen Agho, Greta Mack Harris, Darla Palmer, Marvin L. Sanders and Wendy Wilson White. The winner will serve the remainder of former DA Jody Owens’s term, through January 2028. Voters should also know that the first comprehensive picture of campaign financing was expected only about a week before Election Day under the shortened special-election disclosure schedule.
Who is on the ballot?
The Mississippi Secretary of State’s District 7 candidate list names five candidates. The sample ballot identifies all five as Independent and includes a write-in option. Check the Secretary of State’s candidate information and the official sample ballot for ballot details.

Why is there a special election?
Governor Tate Reeves called the November 3, 2026 special election after appointing Brad McCullouch to fill the district attorney vacancy until voters choose a successor. The vacancy followed Jody Owens’s resignation after he pleaded guilty in a federal bribery conspiracy case. The election winner does not begin a new full term; the winner completes Owens’s term, which is scheduled to end in January 2028. Reeves’s appointment and election announcement provides the state’s account of the appointment.

Reeves said he was convinced the Hinds County assistant district attorneys “do an admirable job prosecuting criminals.” That was his stated rationale for appointing McCullouch, not an independent finding about the office or a statement about the candidates’ future performance. Local reporting says McCullouch is not running because he lives outside the Seventh Judicial District.

What is known about the candidates’ experience?
Mississippi Today’s candidate-background report describes four candidates as current or former staff of the Hinds County District Attorney’s Office and Palmer as a criminal defense attorney. Those job histories offer different perspectives on prosecution and defense, but they do not establish what any candidate would prioritize as DA.
| Candidate | Reported background |
|---|---|
| Gwen Agho | Assistant district attorney, according to Mississippi Today’s September 30, 2026 report. |
| Greta Mack Harris | Former Hinds County assistant district attorney, according to the same report. |
| Darla Palmer | Criminal defense attorney, according to the same report. |
| Marvin L. Sanders | Former Hinds County assistant district attorney; also served as an assistant attorney general, according to the same report. |
| Wendy Wilson White | Assistant district attorney, according to the same report. |
The available reporting does not provide a complete, equally detailed set of candidate plans for caseloads, case review, office management or public accountability. Voters looking for those comparisons should rely on candidates’ own statements rather than infer policy from career history.

Who is funding the campaigns?
As of Mississippi Today’s September 30 report, voters were not expected to receive their first comprehensive view of how the five campaigns were financed until roughly a week before the November 3 election. The report describes shortened special-election disclosure rules and says last-minute contributions above $200 must be reported at least two days before voting. As a result, early public filings may not show the full funding picture, and later reports may change what is known.
The same report said Sanders had held one fundraiser at the Continental Cigar Club in downtown Jackson. Asked about his campaign coffers, he replied, “You’d have to ask my wife,” in a joking exchange reported by Mississippi Today. That anecdote is not a substitute for a complete accounting of campaign receipts or donors. Consult the Mississippi Secretary of State’s campaign finance filings for disclosures as they become available.

What should voters check before November 3?
- Confirm the ballot: Use the Secretary of State’s District 7 candidate listing and sample ballot for the official names and write-in option.
- Review current finance reports: Check the latest campaign filings close to Election Day; the September 30 reporting described a disclosure schedule that left important information until shortly before voting.
- Compare direct statements: Ask candidates how they would handle caseloads, review cases, manage the office and report publicly on its work. The available candidate-background reporting does not establish a complete platform comparison.
What does District 7 cover?
The race is for District 7, which covers Hinds County. The Hinds County Election Commission says it oversees county elections and lists 108 voting precincts and more than 149,000 registered voters on its county page. Those are countywide administrative figures, not a forecast of turnout or the number of people who will vote in this special election. See the Hinds County Election Commission for local election information.
