The Minecraft stick item identifier is minecraft:stick. In Bedrock Edition, Microsoft’s item enum also lists stick; Java Edition uses the namespaced identifier. The command syntax depends on your edition, and Java item-data syntax also depends on whether you are using a version before or from 1.20.5 onward.
What is the stick ID in Minecraft?
Use minecraft:stick as the modern namespaced item identifier. An item identifier names the item; it is distinct from extra data attached to an individual item stack.
- Java Edition: The item identifier is
minecraft:stick. - Bedrock Edition: Microsoft’s item enum lists both
minecraft:stickandstickfor Stick. The namespaced form is the clearest choice when identifying the item.
These references are edition-specific, so do not assume that a command written for Java will work unchanged in Bedrock.

Using the ID in a command
Java Edition
For a basic Java item reference, use minecraft:stick. The exact command and any item data depend on the Java version. Mojang’s Java Edition 1.20.5 notes use minecraft:stick as an example item type and state that command item syntax was updated in that release. Read the Java Edition 1.20.5 release notes.

Bedrock Edition
Bedrock has its own item enum and item-definition documentation. Microsoft identifies its item enum as a reference for commands including clear, give, and replaceitem. Consult the Bedrock Item enum and Item JSON documentation for Bedrock-specific details. Do not copy Java item-data syntax into a Bedrock command.
Why older Java stick commands may fail
Java Edition 1.20.5 changed how item-stack-specific properties are represented. Mojang says the release replaced the older NBT tag field with structured components and updated item syntax in commands. Accordingly, an older Java example that attaches data using the former item-NBT syntax may not work in 1.20.5 or later.

What the stick ID does—and does not—tell you
The identifier answers which item a command or reference points to. It does not by itself establish the item’s recipe, stack size, or any numeric ID mapping. Those details are outside the identifier references cited here, so avoid treating an old numeric ID or an unrelated edition’s value as a universal Minecraft stick ID.
