In Minecraft, you can change game mode in world settings where the option is available, use a permitted /gamemode command, or—on Java Edition—open the Game Mode Switcher with F3+F4. Commands require cheats or sufficient multiplayer permissions. In Bedrock single-player, enabling cheats permanently disables achievements for that world, even if you later turn cheats off.
Choose a game mode
Pick a mode based on what you want to do in the world. Minecraft Help describes the modes as follows:

| Spectator | Observing a world | You watch without interacting with the world. |
Minecraft Help’s game mode guide describes Hardcore separately: it is a one-life mode and cannot be turned off once enabled on a world, so it is not an ordinary mode to toggle into and out of.
Change game mode with a command
Type a slash command in the chat window, such as /gamemode creative or /gamemode survival. Mojang’s command guide explains that commands use a leading slash and are protected by permissions. The examples here show the basic mode command; they do not establish every edition’s aliases or player-target syntax.

Java Edition single-player
Commands must be allowed. When creating the world, enable Allow Commands; for an existing world, enable it in World Options. Then open chat, enter the command, and submit it.
Bedrock Edition single-player
Before turning cheats on, note that enabling cheats permanently disables achievements for that world, even if cheats are later turned off. If you accept that trade-off, open Game settings and turn on Allow Cheats, then enter the command in chat.

LAN worlds and servers
On someone else’s multiplayer world, the command works only if your permissions allow it. Ask the host, server owner, or administrator to grant the necessary access; changing your own settings cannot override server permissions.
Use Java Edition’s Game Mode Switcher

- Hold F3 and tap F4 to open the Game Mode Switcher.
- Tap F4 to cycle through modes, or choose one with the mouse.
- Release F3 to apply the selected mode.
The switcher remembers the last mode and presents it as the first selection next time. If the shortcut does not work, confirm you are playing Java Edition and check your keyboard mapping and permissions. The same notes document F3+N as a Spectator toggle that returns to the previous mode; it is a secondary shortcut, not the all-mode switcher.

Mojang’s Bedrock 1.19.50 release notes, posted November 29, 2022, document entering Spectator through the Personal Game Mode option in World Settings or with /gamemode spectator when cheats are enabled. The notes say Spectators can fly through solid blocks and entities, cannot take damage, and cannot use items or interact with blocks or mobs. Inventory, health, and held items remain unchanged when entering or leaving the mode. Menu names and availability can vary by platform and game version.

Why can’t I use /gamemode?
- Commands are not enabled in your single-player world. In Java, enable Allow Commands through world creation or World Options. In Bedrock, enable Allow Cheats in Game settings, bearing in mind the permanent achievement effect.
- You lack multiplayer permissions. Ask the host or server administrator; player-side settings do not grant server privileges.
- The shortcut or menu differs on your setup. The F3+F4 switcher is documented for Java Edition. Check the edition, keyboard mapping, platform, and current version.
