Craft an enchanting table with 1 book, 2 diamonds, and 4 obsidian in a crafting table’s 3×3 grid. Put the book in the top-center slot, the diamonds on either side of obsidian in the middle row, and obsidian across the entire bottom row.
Enchanting table recipe and grid layout
Use a crafting table, not the smaller 2×2 inventory crafting grid. Arrange the ingredients like this:

How to get the ingredients
Make or find a book
To craft a book, combine three paper with one leather. Sugar cane is used to make paper. Books and bookshelves may also be found in generated structures. See the Minecraft Wiki book guide for these ingredient details.

Obtain two diamonds
You need two diamonds for the recipe. Mining and loot are possible progression routes; the cited Minecraft Wiki advancement guide discusses obtaining diamonds.
Collect four obsidian
Mine four obsidian blocks. The cited guide recommends a diamond pickaxe for mining obsidian; see the Minecraft Wiki obsidian guidance.

What you need to enchant after crafting
Making the table does not enchant an item by itself. To use it, interact with the table and spend experience points and lapis lazuli. Microsoft Learn’s Minecraft Creator documentation on enchantments describes this requirement.

Bookshelves placed around the table can increase its power. The Minecraft Wiki’s diamond tutorial states that 15 bookshelves are needed for maximum power and estimates the materials for those shelves as 45 books, 45 leather, 135 paper, and 90 planks. These are in-game resource counts; check guidance for your game edition and version if you need version-specific setup details.
