Migrating a Visual Basic 6 application is a modernization project, not a one-click conversion. Start by inventorying the application and its dependencies, then choose between phased .NET interoperability, a direct Visual Basic .NET upgrade, or a broader rewrite. Each route requires engineering work on areas such as forms, COM and ActiveX, data access, Windows API calls, deployment, and testing.

Microsoft ended support for the VB6 development environment on April 8, 2008, and recommends replacing VB6 applications with modern technology. The VB6 runtime can still provide a compatibility bridge on supported Windows versions, but that is not the same as ongoing support for the IDE or a guarantee that every application and dependency will work indefinitely.

What “VB6 migration” involves

A VB6 application is more than its source code. Its behavior may depend on forms, compiled components, third-party controls, COM registrations, database providers, operating-system APIs, installers, and business rules that were never documented. A successful migration accounts for that whole system, not just syntax.

Microsoft’s Visual Basic 6.0 Support Announcement says support for the VB6 IDE and Visual Studio 6.0 IDE ended on April 8, 2008. Microsoft recommends replacing applications with modern technology. Its separate support policy describes a limited compatibility goal for existing VB6 applications on supported Windows versions: support is focused on serious regressions and critical security issues, rather than continued development of the VB6 toolchain.

The VB6 runtime files remain 32-bit. On 64-bit Windows they run through WOW emulation, but that does not establish that every related 32-bit control, driver, installer, or external integration will work. Treat runtime compatibility as a bridge to a planned destination, not as the migration plan itself.

Choose a migration route

Microsoft recommends assessing the application and choosing a strategy before starting the upgrade. The right route depends on dependency compatibility, business continuity, available tests and skills, security and support horizon, deployment needs, data risk, and total cost of ownership.

Phased interoperability Keep the VB6 shell while introducing .NET forms or controls. Microsoft’s Interop Forms Toolkit supports displaying .NET forms and controls inside a VB6 application. Teams that need incremental delivery and want to limit the size of each cutover. The application temporarily spans VB6 and .NET, so both sides and their integration need to be maintained.
Direct VB6-to-Visual Basic .NET upgrade Use Microsoft’s upgrade guidance as a map for language, forms, data access, COM+, and architectural changes, then remediate the converted application. Applications whose existing structure and Visual Basic expertise make a .NET translation practical. Conversion does not eliminate manual fixes, regression testing, or deployment redesign.
Broader rewrite or modernization Rebuild around a current .NET desktop or web architecture rather than translating the existing application as-is. Applications whose UI, dependencies, data model, or operational constraints make direct translation uneconomic. More of the application’s behavior and architecture must be reimplemented and verified.

These are not mutually exclusive forever: an incremental project can use interoperability as a transition and later retire the VB6 shell. Decide whether that is a real target state or simply an interim arrangement.

  • Undocumented business rules, calculations, error handling, and workflows used by different roles.

An assessment tool can help identify likely conversion issues, but its report is a starting point for engineering review. It cannot substitute for checking whether a dependency is available and supported on the intended target or for documenting behavior that is only known to users.

Prototype the riskiest dependencies

Before setting a schedule, test the components most likely to constrain the architecture: controls with no source or vendor support, COM and COM+ integrations, Windows API calls, device and printer connections, database providers, and legacy installation steps. A small prototype can reveal whether a dependency can be replaced, isolated behind an interface, kept temporarily, or requires a different migration route.

Plan the work in stages

  1. Record current behavior. Build a characterization and regression suite around representative workflows, calculations, reports, imports and exports, permissions, and error handling. Preserve fixtures so the old and new implementations can be compared under the same conditions where practical.
  2. Set the target and boundaries. Choose the migration route, target runtime and operating environment, deployment model, data strategy, and the point at which VB6 will be retired if using an interim approach.
  3. Isolate and resolve dependencies. Replace unsupported controls and providers where needed, define boundaries around COM components that remain, and verify API, device, and installer behavior in the target environment.
  4. Migrate in testable slices. Group work by user workflow or component boundary so each increment can be exercised against the recorded behavior. For phased interoperability, specify how the .NET forms or controls interact with the VB6 shell and how failures are handled across that boundary.
  5. Remediate and validate. Address language and architectural differences, forms, data access, and component integration. Run regression tests, compare outputs, and validate usability, permissions, and deployment on the intended Windows or .NET environment.
  6. Modernize delivery and operations. Move source control and builds to maintained tooling, document configuration and secrets, replace obsolete deployment steps, and define rollback and parallel-run procedures before cutover.

What usually needs more than automatic conversion

Microsoft’s archived VB6-to-Visual Basic .NET upgrade material covers forms, language differences, data access, COM+ Services, XML Web services, ADO.NET, .NET remoting, and architectural changes, with before-and-after code examples. The range of topics is a useful warning: even when conversion tooling assists with code, application behavior and operational assumptions still need review.

  • Forms and controls: Recreate or adapt UI behavior and verify any third-party control replacement, including keyboard use, validation, and display of existing data.
  • Language and architecture: Review code that depends on VB6-specific behavior and decisions that no longer fit the intended application structure.
  • Data access: Validate providers, transaction behavior, queries, and stored data; select a current data-access approach for the target rather than assuming the old provider carries over unchanged.
  • COM, ActiveX, and COM+: Identify which components can remain temporarily, which can be replaced, and which require a new interface or implementation.
  • Windows APIs and 32-bit assumptions: Check declarations and integrations against the target environment. A 32-bit VB6 runtime operating under WOW emulation does not make every dependency compatible.
  • Deployment and configuration: Rebuild installation, registration, configuration, and rollback procedures around maintained tools and the selected target.

Visual Basic .NET, C#, desktop, or web?

Choosing Visual Basic .NET instead of C# is a language decision inside a broader platform decision. Microsoft’s historical upgrade guidance specifically addresses VB6-to-Visual Basic .NET, but it does not establish that a direct translation is the best fit for a particular application. Compare the team’s ability to maintain the chosen language, the availability of maintained libraries and controls, dependency compatibility, target architecture, and expected support horizon.

A Windows desktop target may preserve familiar workflows while still requiring UI and deployment modernization. A web target is a larger architectural change: the existing desktop interaction model, integrations, permissions, data access, and operational environment must be redesigned and tested rather than presumed to convert automatically. Choose the destination based on actual user and system needs, not on the apparent simplicity of translating source code.

For current Windows Forms work, Microsoft’s guidance emphasizes reviewing breaking changes across target versions, using modern SDK-style projects and configuration patterns, and selecting maintained controls and deployment approaches. These considerations apply to the target design; they do not remove the need to resolve VB6-specific dependencies.

How to reduce cutover risk

  • Keep the existing application available until the replacement has passed agreed workflow and data checks.
  • Use the same representative input fixtures to compare old and new calculations, reports, and exports.
  • Define ownership for each unresolved dependency and record whether it is being retained, replaced, or retired.
  • Prepare rollback and, where appropriate, parallel-run procedures before changing production workflows.
  • Test deployment on the actual target environment, including permissions and integrations, rather than relying only on developer machines.

Microsoft’s official upgrade guide was listed in the Download Center with a publication date of July 15, 2024; it is archived guidance, so use it to understand migration categories and examples, not as proof that every referenced component or tool is current.
