Short answer: migrating from ScrapingBee is not a host-name swap. Inventory the options and output your current integration uses, map each behavior to the new API, change authentication and serialization, decode the new response shape, then compare representative pages, failures, latency, throughput, and cost before moving production traffic.

This guide uses Zyte API’s documented ScrapingBee migration as a concrete example, while treating it as an example rather than proof of drop-in compatibility. The same method applies when evaluating another web-scraping API.

What changes when you leave ScrapingBee?

ScrapingBee’s HTML API accepts a target URL and API key and enables JavaScript rendering by default. Rendering, proxy selection, and extraction features affect credit usage. Its current documentation recommends bearer-token authentication; query-string api_key authentication is deprecated, although still supported for backward compatibility. Record the behavior your application actually depends on before changing anything.

In Zyte’s documented migration, a ScrapingBee request sent as a GET with URL-encoded query parameters becomes a POST with a JSON body. Authentication changes to HTTP Basic Authentication in the example. The response is a JSON object rather than the target body directly, and the target response body is base64 encoded. Your client therefore needs transport, parsing, and error-handling changes—not merely a different endpoint.

Concern ScrapingBee pattern Zyte migration example Migration implication
HTTP method GET POST Rewrite request construction and signing.
Parameters URL query string JSON request body Preserve types and nested action structures.
Authentication Bearer token recommended by current docs HTTP Basic Authentication in the migration example Change credential handling and secret configuration.
Response Page content returned directly JSON envelope Parse provider metadata and target content separately.
Target body Usually consumed as returned Base64 encoded in the JSON object Decode before HTML, JSON, or binary processing.

Read the ScrapingBee API documentation and Zyte’s ScrapingBee migration guide alongside your code and deployed configuration. Optional parameters in documentation can still be mandatory to your application’s behavior.

Step 1: inventory the integration you have

Search source code, environment variables, job definitions, dashboards, and downstream parsers. For every request, record the exact parameter, default, and consumer.

  • Target URL, HTTP method, timeout, retry and concurrency settings.
  • JavaScript rendering, navigation waits, fixed delays, selector waits, and network-idle waits.
  • js_scenario actions such as click, fill, scroll, and wait.
  • Proxy mode, country or geolocation, custom headers, cookies, user agent, and authorization.
  • Screenshot requirements, extraction rules, AI extraction, and whether you store raw HTML.
  • Expected status handling, body encoding, content type, redirect behavior, and error fields.
  • Usage, credit, latency, success-rate, and retry metrics.

Capture a fixture for each important page type: ordinary server-rendered HTML, JavaScript-heavy pages, pages requiring interaction, geolocation-dependent pages, and pages where extraction or screenshots are used. These fixtures become your parity test set.

Step 2: separate transport from scraping behavior

Create a provider-neutral request model in your application. Keep fields such as url, render_js, waits, actions, location, and output format independent of any vendor’s parameter names. Then write an adapter for each provider. This prevents a provider-specific query string from leaking into parsers, queues, and business logic.

Authentication and secrets

Use the destination’s documented authentication method, store credentials in a secret manager, and redact authorization headers from logs. Do not automatically carry ScrapingBee’s old query-string key pattern into the new provider. Rotate credentials after the cutover and verify that staging and production use separate keys where the provider supports it.

Request and response serialization

Validate outgoing requests against a schema before sending them. On receipt, check the HTTP status, provider error object, target status, content type, and body presence independently. Decode base64 only after confirming that the destination response marks the body as encoded. Keep the original provider response in a short-lived diagnostic sample so parser regressions can be investigated without logging sensitive page data.

Step 3: map features one by one

Zyte documents direct or approximate mappings for several common ScrapingBee controls, but also lists unsupported options. Treat every row as an engineering decision, not an assumed equivalence.

ScrapingBee need Documented Zyte direction What to verify
JavaScript rendering Browser HTML DOM completeness and timing on your pages.
wait or wait_for Browser actions Selector semantics, timeout behavior, and action ordering.
Click, fill, scroll, or wait actions Zyte actions Equivalent selectors, event behavior, and resulting content.
Premium proxy Residential IP type Country, rotation, ban rate, and cost for your traffic.
country_code Geolocation controls Whether IP, browser locale, timezone, or all three must change.
Ad or resource blocking Marked unsupported in the guide Recreate blocking in your own pipeline or redesign the workflow.
Custom proxies Marked unsupported Keep a separate provider or remove the dependency.
Server-side extraction rules Marked unsupported Move extraction into your code or select another capability.
Selected screenshot targeting and some request headers/controls Some are marked unsupported Test the exact option; do not infer parity from similar names.

Consult the complete migration table for the option set you use. If a feature is unsupported, choose explicitly among rebuilding it, changing the workflow, retaining that capability elsewhere, or selecting another API.

Example adapter: ScrapingBee-style request to Zyte

The following Python sketch shows the structural changes. Replace field names with the current destination schema and keep credentials outside source control.

import base64
import requests

scrapingbee_request = {
    "url": "https://example.com/products",
    "render_js": True,
    "wait": 2,
}

# Map your neutral model to the destination schema.
zyte_payload = {
    "url": scrapingbee_request["url"],
    "browserHtml": {},
    # Add documented browser actions for waits/interactions.
}

response = requests.post(
    "https://api.zyte.com/v1/extract",
    auth=("ZYTE_API_KEY", ""),
    json=zyte_payload,
    timeout=90,
)
response.raise_for_status()
data = response.json()
encoded = data.get("httpResponseBody")
if encoded is None:
    raise RuntimeError(f"No target body in provider response: {data}")
html = base64.b64decode(encoded).decode("utf-8", errors="replace")
print(html[:200])

Use the destination’s current endpoint and field names from its documentation; the important migration properties are POST plus JSON, the new authentication scheme, an envelope response, and base64 decoding.

Step 4: compare behavior before production traffic

  1. Run equivalent requests. Start with a static page, then add JavaScript, waits, actions, location, proxy, and extraction requirements one at a time.
  2. Compare outputs. Check required fields, item counts, canonical URLs, encoding, cookies or headers consumed by your code, screenshots, and raw HTML completeness.
  3. Measure operations. Record provider and target status, latency percentiles, timeout and retry counts, successful extraction rate, and response size.
  4. Exercise failures. Include blocked pages, bot checks, malformed URLs, selector timeouts, empty results, oversized bodies, and provider rate limits.
  5. Test complex cases. Zyte recommends trying and comparing requests in its tools and testing complex use cases before migration; follow that advice with your own fixtures.

Do not approve a provider because a handful of status codes match. A page that returns HTTP 200 but lacks a client-rendered price, location-specific content, or a clicked tab is a failed migration for that workflow.

Cost, throughput, and capacity planning

ScrapingBee documents configuration-based credit costs. Its current HTML API documentation says JavaScript rendering is enabled by default and costs 5 credits for a standard request; premium proxy use is documented as 25 credits with JavaScript rendering and 10 credits without it; stealth proxy with JavaScript rendering is documented as 75 credits per successful API call; and AI extraction options add 5 credits. These are vendor pricing specifications accessed September 29, 2026, and can change. Auto-Mode may try cheaper configurations before escalating and charges for the configuration that succeeds, subject to its optional cap.

Zyte’s migration material describes pay-as-you-go usage with spending-limit or commitment structures and RPM-based limits, while its comparison describes ScrapingBee’s concurrency-based limits. A fair estimate must use your page mix, successful-request volume, browser-rendering rate, proxy escalation, extraction options, retries, and required throughput. Calculate monthly spend from a representative sample rather than headline prices.

Input to model Measurement
Traffic Requests per day and peak requests per minute.
Rendering mix Share requiring browser JavaScript, waits, or actions.
Access strategy Proxy type, countries, retries, and escalation frequency.
Output Raw HTML, structured extraction, screenshots, or multiple outputs per URL.
Reliability overhead Timeouts, retries, failed requests, and reprocessing.
Limits Provider RPM, concurrency, account commitments, and queue capacity.

Step 5: cut over safely

  1. Deploy the adapter behind a feature flag and keep the ScrapingBee path intact.
  2. Send a small, representative shadow or canary sample to the candidate provider.
  3. Compare extraction quality, latency, failures, and spend using the same dashboards.
  4. Increase traffic in stages while watching rate-limit responses and queue depth.
  5. Keep rollback credentials, configuration, and parser compatibility available until real traffic is stable.

This staged approach is an engineering safeguard prompted by changed response shapes, unsupported features, and different cost and rate-limit models; it is not a provider guarantee.

Common migration failures and fixes

Authentication errors

Symptom: 401 or 403 responses. Fix: verify the destination’s authentication scheme, credential encoding, account permissions, and that a proxy or gateway has not stripped the Authorization header.

Successful request, empty parser result

Symptom: HTTP success but no records. Fix: inspect the raw destination envelope, decode base64 where required, confirm content type and browser rendering, and compare the final DOM—not only the initial HTML.

Wait or action timeout

Symptom: selector or navigation timeout. Fix: confirm that the selector exists in the rendered DOM, use a deterministic wait condition, remove unnecessary delays, and test action order on a fixture page.

Feature cannot be mapped

Symptom: blocking, custom proxy, extraction, or screenshot behavior differs. Fix: classify it as unsupported, rebuild it in your pipeline, change the workflow, or retain a second capability deliberately. Do not silently omit it.

Rate limits or unexpected spend

Symptom: throttling or a larger bill after cutover. Fix: compare RPM and concurrency limits, count retries and escalations, set provider spending controls where available, and cap or queue concurrency according to measured capacity.

If your goal is a clean image or PDF rather than a full scraping pipeline, ScreenshotNeo makes one GET request to capture a page. Before capture it accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and every response reports the result in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. It also provides an MCP server for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients, with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools.

FAQ

Is Zyte API a drop-in replacement for ScrapingBee?

No. The documented migration changes method, encoding, authentication, response structure, and body decoding, and some ScrapingBee options are unsupported.

Should I migrate the parser or the HTTP client first?

Define a provider-neutral model, then update the transport adapter and parser together in a tested branch. Deploying only one side creates misleading success responses or empty data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How many test pages are enough?

Use every production page class and add at least one fixture for each behavior your inventory identifies: rendering, waits, actions, location, proxy, extraction, and failure handling.

Can I compare prices from published credit rates alone?

No. Rendering, proxy escalation, extraction, retries, traffic limits, and successful-request volume determine your actual cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the safest rollback plan?

Keep the ScrapingBee adapter, credentials, and parser path deployable behind a feature flag until staged production traffic confirms equivalent results.

Where should provider-specific fields live?

Inside provider adapters, with a neutral request model used by queues and business logic; this limits future migrations to adapter and parser changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Successful migration means behavioral parity, not merely a different endpoint. Inventory every ScrapingBee dependency, map and test each one, measure real workload cost and capacity, and cut over in stages with rollback ready.
