How do you beat captains in Shadow of War?
Gather intel before you engage
Rather than repeatedly attacking a captain without preparation, inspect the available information about that opponent and look for weaknesses you can exploit. WB Games’ starter guide demonstrates gaining intel by dominating a nearby Worm, then using what you learn to prepare for the captain encounter. Treat that as a useful preparation loop: check the captain, gather available intel, choose an approach suited to the information, and adapt if the fight changes.

Use height and terrain to reset the fight
Talion can climb nearly any surface or structure, according to WB Games. Climbing can help him leave combat, create time to heal, or attack from a different position. If an encounter becomes dangerous, consider using the environment to change your position instead of continuing to trade attacks. This is general tactical guidance, not a guarantee that every enemy encounter can be escaped safely.

Check the controls for your controller and situation
WB Games groups control layouts by controller type and gameplay situation, including examples such as basic movement and riding a Caragor. How do you get better gear in Shadow of War?
WB Games says gear is primarily obtained by defeating Orc Captains and completing missions. Its gear FAQ also says that more difficult Orcs with higher rarities drop gear matching their rarity. In practical terms, captain fights and missions are the core progression loop to pursue when you want new equipment; the official guidance does not establish a guaranteed drop schedule.

How does the Nemesis System work?
The Nemesis System makes Orc rivals remember encounters with Talion and supports an evolving set of rival and follower relationships. Nintendo’s product description says, “The Nemesis System creates unique Orc rivals who remember every battle, defeat, and encounter.” It also describes dominating opponents, making them captains, and commanding an army in fortress conquests. WB Games calls the system the backbone of much of the game’s conflict in its starter guide.
