Microsoft’s new Michelangelus typeface is a serif font inspired by Michelangelo’s art, manuscripts, and signature—not a replica of his handwriting. Studiogusto created it for the Fabbrica di San Pietro, and Microsoft says it is available to download, with distribution through Microsoft 365 apps planned for the end of 2026.
What is the Michelangelus font?
Michelangelus is a new serif typeface commissioned by the Fabbrica di San Pietro, the institution responsible for St. Peter’s Basilica, and designed by Studiogusto. Microsoft Design announced it on October 8, 2026, as a font inspired by Michelangelo’s work and handwritten manuscripts. The project commemorates the 400th anniversary of the consecration of St. Peter’s Basilica, according to the Fabbrica di San Pietro.
The name and inspiration may suggest a Michelangelo handwriting font, but Michelangelus is not meant to reproduce his writing. Studiogusto founder, co-partner, and creative director Stefano Calandro said, “Our first decision, probably the most important one, was not to emulate and perfectly imitate the Michelangelo’s handwriting,” as quoted in Microsoft Design’s announcement. The signature was an important point of focus, but the typeface is a designed interpretation rather than a handwriting facsimile.

How many styles and glyphs does Michelangelus include?
Both announcements list four styles: regular, regular italic, bold, and bold italic. They do not agree on the glyph total. Microsoft Design says the typeface has more than 2,000 glyphs, while the Fabbrica di San Pietro’s press release says it has more than 500. Neither announcement explains the difference, so the definitive count is unresolved.

Where can you get Michelangelus?
Microsoft says Michelangelus is available for download and is planned for distribution through Microsoft 365 apps, including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel, at the end of 2026. The Fabbrica describes it as accessible and free to use worldwide. The announcements do not provide detailed license terms, installation steps, platform requirements, or a direct download link, so check the official font announcement for current availability and terms rather than assuming a particular installation method.
Microsoft’s cloud-font documentation explains that fonts can be downloaded for use in Office applications. That describes one way Office delivers fonts; it does not establish the specific licensing or installation details for Michelangelus.

Is Michelangelus replacing Aptos?
No. Michelangelus is a newly announced serif typeface, while Microsoft identifies Aptos as the default Office font. Aptos is a sans serif designed by Steve Matteson to replace Calibri, according to Microsoft’s Aptos documentation. Microsoft’s announcement of Aptos as Office’s default distinguishes that existing default from Michelangelus, which is an additional font with its own planned Microsoft 365 rollout.
