Microsoft’s “extra layer” for Edge is Enhanced Security Mode, a built-in setting that reduces browser attack surface on unfamiliar websites. It does this by running those sites without just-in-time (JIT) compilation and by applying operating-system mitigations such as Hardware-enforced Stack Protection, Arbitrary Code Guard (ACG) and Control Flow Guard (CFG). Edge users can enable it in Privacy, search, and services; organizations can enforce it with Group Policy.

What Enhanced Security Mode does

Microsoft describes the feature as protection for browsing unfamiliar sites. In normal browser operation, JIT compilation can turn JavaScript into machine code while a page runs. Enhanced Security Mode removes that compilation path for sites Edge considers unfamiliar, reducing one part of the exploit surface. On Windows, Microsoft also lists Hardware-enforced Stack Protection, ACG and CFG among the mitigations used with the mode.

The protection is about making exploitation harder, not guaranteeing that a site is safe. It does not replace software updates, account security or sensible browsing decisions. Microsoft’s documentation applies to Edge version 111 and later, and notes that some users may see the setting enabled by default while the company continues development and testing. The exact behavior and wording can change, so check the current Edge interface after updating.

How to turn on Edge’s extra security

  1. Open Microsoft Edge and select Settings and more (the three-dot menu).
  2. Choose Settings.
  3. Open Privacy, search, and services.
  4. Find the security section and enable Enhanced Security Mode. Depending on the Edge build, the control may offer a choice of how broadly to apply the protection.

If the setting is already enabled, no additional hardware purchase is required. Because Microsoft is still refining the feature, labels and placement may differ slightly between releases and managed installations.

What organizations can control

Administrators can configure Enhanced Security Mode through Microsoft Edge Group Policy. Policy controls include allow and deny lists: an organization can explicitly apply the enhanced protections to selected sites or disable the mode for sites that need the normal execution path. This lets security teams start with broad coverage and create narrowly scoped exceptions instead of turning the feature off everywhere.

Policies are useful when a company needs a consistent browser posture. Test business-critical applications before enforcing the setting, document every exception and review those exceptions as applications are updated. A site placed on an exception list no longer receives the enhanced mode’s protections for the users covered by that policy.

Compatibility: why a site may need an exception

Microsoft warns developers that WebAssembly performance in Enhanced Security Mode may not meet expectations. WebAssembly-heavy applications can therefore run more slowly for users covered by the mode, but Microsoft does not say that every site or every user will experience a problem.

When a specific application is affected, verify the issue in a current Edge build and compare it with the mode disabled. If the application’s performance is unacceptable, add that site as an exception rather than disabling Enhanced Security Mode globally. Keep the exception limited to the affected domain and reassess it after the application or Edge is updated.

Enhanced Security Mode is not HTTPS-First Mode

These settings address different threats and should not be presented as one feature.

Feature Primary purpose How it works Typical control
Enhanced Security Mode Reduce exploit attack surface on unfamiliar sites Runs unfamiliar sites without JIT compilation and uses mitigations including Hardware-enforced Stack Protection, ACG and CFG Edge settings or Group Policy allow and deny lists
HTTPS-First Mode Improve connection security Upgrades a site to HTTPS when possible and warns when the site does not support HTTPS Edge privacy and security settings
Edge for Business security controls Organizational visibility, policy enforcement and security-stack integration Enterprise controls for areas such as AI use and sensitive data, plus connector integrations Organization-managed Edge for Business deployments

Using HTTPS protects data in transit; it does not provide the same exploit-surface reduction as Enhanced Security Mode. Conversely, Enhanced Security Mode does not turn an HTTP site into an HTTPS connection.

How the 2026 enterprise announcements fit

Microsoft’s March 23, 2026 RSAC announcement described Edge for Business controls for AI usage and sensitive data. On August 4, 2026, Microsoft announced security-connector integrations with Cisco Secure Access, Tanium and Clever. Those are enterprise capabilities for connecting organizational security systems to Edge; they are not consumer hardware or prerequisites for enabling Enhanced Security Mode.

Microsoft also published a security baseline for Edge version 151 on August 25, 2026 (updated August 31), with six new recommendations and one additional setting for organizations to evaluate. That figure describes the version-specific enterprise baseline, not the effectiveness or adoption of Enhanced Security Mode.

Keep Edge current

Microsoft announced on June 11, 2026 that Stable would move to a two-week release cycle beginning with Edge 152, while Extended Stable would receive updates every fourth release, approximately every eight weeks. This schedule announcement is dated and may have changed; organizations should verify the current release policy and keep supported Edge installations patched.

What Microsoft has not established

Microsoft’s surfaced documentation does not provide an attack-reduction percentage, an adoption rate or a common performance benchmark that would let readers rank Enhanced Security Mode against HTTPS-First Mode or enterprise connectors. Treat it as a defense-in-depth control whose value is reducing available exploit paths, not as a measured guarantee of protection.
