The Zune HD is the best-supported choice for community homebrew and modding. Project Lyra names it as its primary target and documents an on-device modkit and runtime. The Zune 30, Zune 80/120, and Zune 4/8/16 are separate Classic-platform models, and available documentation does not establish that the HD’s homebrew route works on them—or that every homebrew game works on the HD.
Which Zune models have documented homebrew support?
Project Lyra’s documentation makes the Zune HD (codename Pavo) the clearest option for someone seeking a documented community modding path. Lyra describes a persistent runtime and a modkit for installing and managing mods on the device. It also documents installing Lyra on a Zune HD over Wi-Fi through its browser. See Project Lyra’s documentation.
That is evidence for a modding target, not a promise that every homebrew game or application will run. The sources do not provide a complete, title-by-title compatibility list.
How the Zune model families compare
| Models | Platform and documentation | What that means for homebrew |
|---|---|---|
| Zune HD (Pavo) | Windows CE 6 R3; Lyra identifies it as its primary target and documents device-verified firmware research. | Strongest documented community modding route among these models. Individual games and apps may still vary in compatibility. |
| Zune 30 (Keel) | Windows CE 5 Classic platform. Lyra says it is the only Classic device examined in depth, relying mostly on static analysis of its firmware image and minimal live instrumentation. | The available evidence does not establish broad homebrew compatibility. |
| Zune 80/120 (Draco) | Second-generation HDD Classic models based on the Classic 3.x platform. Lyra says Draco has not been analyzed independently. | Compatibility remains uncertain in the available documentation. |
| Zune 4/8/16 (Scorpius) | Second-generation flash Classic models based on the Classic 3.x platform. Lyra says Scorpius has not been analyzed independently. | Compatibility remains uncertain in the available documentation. |
Lyra’s HD work is more firmly grounded in device verification than its Classic analysis. The families differ in operating system, system-on-chip, and graphics and audio backends; shared user-interface components do not prove that software behaves identically. Do not assume a game or mod tested on one family transfers to another.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Official Zune games are not the same as homebrew
Historical Microsoft instructions describe official-era game installation, not community homebrew compatibility. For non-touchscreen Zune players, the archived instructions say to open the Player Update screen and choose “Install Games.” For Zune HD apps, Microsoft described downloading through the on-device Marketplace or Zune PC software and syncing to the player. These directions do not establish that Classic models run community-made games, and they do not establish that the Marketplace is available today. See Microsoft’s archived Zune games answer.
What the Zune HD community installation guide covers
A community guide explains how to add an archived app or game package to the Zune software’s Applications folder and sync it to a Zune HD. The guide explicitly limits its instructions to Zune HD; it is not a Microsoft compatibility guarantee. It also cautions that apps dependent on external services may no longer work if those services have changed or shut down. Read the Zune HD-only community guide before relying on an old package.

Choosing a model for a homebrew project
- For the best-documented starting point: choose a Zune HD, because Lyra names it as its primary target and documents a device-level modding route.
- If you already own a Classic Zune: treat compatibility as unconfirmed rather than assuming the HD instructions apply. The Zune 30 has limited analysis; the 80/120 and 4/8/16 families have not been independently analyzed in Lyra’s documentation.
- For any specific game: check that game’s own requirements and reports. The available sources do not establish a comprehensive list of homebrew titles and compatible models or firmware versions.
Historical Zune HD hardware context
Microsoft’s 2009 Zune HD announcement specified a 480 × 272-pixel display. It also described supported HD video playback through a separately sold HDMI audiovisual dock: 720p viewing on an HDTV required the dock and television, while video shown on the player was downscaled to fit its display. These launch-era specifications describe the hardware, not homebrew compatibility. See Microsoft’s Zune HD announcement.
