Microsoft is adding a long-requested way to play event videos directly from OneDrive in Teams. Organizers and producers using Manage what attendees see will be able to select a OneDrive video, place it on the event stage and control playback without screen sharing a local media player or embedding the file in PowerPoint.
What Microsoft delivered
The feature brings OneDrive video playback into the Teams event production workflow. In an event configured with Manage what attendees see, an organizer or producer can choose a video stored in OneDrive, put it on stage for attendees and use playback controls inside Teams. Microsoft describes the change as a way to provide smoother, higher-quality playback while reducing production complexity.
The improvement addresses a common workaround: opening a video on a computer and sharing that application or the entire screen. It also removes the need to prepare a PowerPoint deck solely to play an embedded clip. Microsoft’s Message Center item MC1506734, published 13 October 2026, documents the feature. Windows Central reported it on 14 October 2026.
Why direct playback matters
Screen sharing a locally played file adds another application, another source of potential lag and another set of controls for the producer to manage. Picture quality can also suffer when Teams is transmitting a shared screen rather than handling the video as event media. Embedding clips in PowerPoint avoids some screen-sharing problems but requires advance deck preparation and can complicate last-minute changes.

- The C920e webcam is certified for Zoom, TAA compliant and works with all popular video calling applications such as Microsoft Teams to ensure compatibility and seamless integration in the workplace.
Sean Endicott described a practical use case: “I run an American football team and we study film from games and practices.” His previous method—sharing his screen during remote film study—was awkward and lower quality. Direct OneDrive playback is aimed at exactly this kind of event: training, analysis, demonstrations and presentations where attendees need to watch a prepared video together.
How to share a OneDrive video in a Teams event
The exact command names may change slightly as the rollout reaches different tenants, but the supported workflow is built around the event’s Manage what attendees see controls.

- Store the video in OneDrive. Upload or move the final event clip to the OneDrive location your production team will use.
- Check access before the event. Confirm that the organizer and every producer who may operate playback can open the file, and that the event configuration allows the intended attendees to receive it.
- Open the event’s producer view. Use the event controls for Manage what attendees see; this feature is intended for events where organizers or producers control the attendee stage.
- Select the OneDrive video. Choose the video from OneDrive rather than opening a local player or a PowerPoint file.
- Put the video on stage. Add it to the attendee-facing stage when you are ready to present it.
- Control playback in Teams. Start or pause the video using the controls provided in the event interface, and remove or replace it when the segment is complete.
Run a rehearsal with the same account permissions and event role that will be used live. A rehearsal can reveal an incorrect OneDrive permission, an unavailable file location or a tenant that has not yet received the feature.

Old and new workflows compared
| Workflow | Playback and controls | Production requirements | Access requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct OneDrive video in Teams | Microsoft characterizes playback as smoother and higher quality; start and pause controls are inside Teams. | Select the OneDrive file and place it on stage; no local media player or PowerPoint deck is required. | Video must be in OneDrive and available to the organizer or producer under the event’s permissions. |
| Screen-share a local player | Can introduce lag or reduced quality; playback is managed through the separate local player and sharing controls. | Requires a computer with the media file and a configured screen or application share. | Producer needs local access to the file and must keep the correct window shared. |
| Embed video in PowerPoint | Playback is tied to the presentation workflow and its embedded-media behavior. | Requires preparing or updating a PowerPoint file and ensuring the embedded clip works on the presenting device. | Producer needs the deck and any media permissions or files it depends on. |
Microsoft has not published a numeric latency, resolution or quality benchmark. “Smoother” and “higher-quality” are qualitative descriptions in the Message Center notice, not measured percentage improvements.

When the feature arrives
The rollout is scheduled in stages:
| Release stage | Scope | Planned timing |
|---|---|---|
| Targeted Release | Worldwide | Early November through early December 2026 |
| General Availability | Worldwide, GCC, GCC High and DoD | Beginning in early December 2026 and expected to complete by early December 2026 |
Supported platforms listed in the notice are Teams desktop and Mac. Because this is a future rollout, the date shown in a tenant can differ according to its release ring, geography and Microsoft’s deployment progress. The schedule is a current plan, not a promise that every organization will see the control simultaneously.
What organizations should do now
Microsoft says no mandatory administrative action is required. It recommends three preparation steps:

- FULL HD 1080P VIDEO: Delivers crisp, clear video at 1080P resolution, ensuring sharp and detailed visuals for video calls, streaming, and conferencing.
- NOISE CANCELLATION: Built-in noise-canceling microphone filters out background sounds, providing clear and focused audio during calls and recordings.
- PRIVACY COVER: Integrated privacy cover lets you easily block the lens when the webcam is not in use, giving you full control over your privacy.
- WIDE-ANGLE LENS & AUTO LIGHT CORRECTION: The wide-angle lens captures more of your surroundings, while auto light correction adjusts for optimal image quality in any lighting condition.
- PLUG & PLAY USB: No drivers or software needed — simply plug into any USB port for instant compatibility with laptops, desktops, PCs, and Macs.
- Tell Teams event organizers and producers that OneDrive videos can be shared directly when the feature reaches their tenant.
- Store planned event videos in OneDrive ahead of time and apply the appropriate permissions.
- Update internal production guidance that currently tells staff to screen-share a local player or embed video in PowerPoint.
Keep the existing screen-share or presentation method available during the transition. It remains a practical fallback for tenants that have not received the feature or for files that are not yet accessible through the required OneDrive permissions.
Permissions and troubleshooting
The video does not appear
Verify that the signed-in organizer or producer can open the file in OneDrive, that the file is stored in the expected account or library and that the event role includes Manage what attendees see. A file that exists but is not shared with the production account will not be usable simply because it is in the organization’s OneDrive environment.

The producer can select the file but attendees cannot watch
Review the event’s attendee-facing permissions and test with a rehearsal account. The producer’s ability to open a file does not by itself establish that attendees are authorized to receive the event stream.
The control is missing
Check whether the tenant has reached its assigned rollout ring and whether the event is configured for the supported producer workflow. Until deployment reaches the tenant, continue using an approved local-player or PowerPoint fallback.
What this changes for event teams
This is a workflow improvement rather than a new standalone video-hosting service. OneDrive remains the storage location, while Teams becomes the place where an authorized producer selects, stages and controls the clip. For teams that regularly show training footage, game film or product demonstrations, that removes a recurring handoff between file storage, a media player and the presentation surface.
