Microsoft SwiftKey can be a reasonable keyboard choice if you are comfortable with Microsoft’s documented data practices and choose its optional features deliberately. Microsoft says learned typing data stays on your device by default. Turning on Backup & Sync sends your personal language model to Microsoft for storage and cross-device syncing; product-improvement sharing is a separate opt-in. The evidence here is Microsoft’s support documentation, not an independent technical audit, so its statements describe the company’s account of how SwiftKey works.
What SwiftKey learns by default—and what changes when you sync
SwiftKey personalizes predictions based on your writing style and keystroke patterns. Microsoft says that, by default, what the keyboard learns remains on the device. Its support FAQ puts it this way: “By default, nothing Microsoft SwiftKey learns about your typing leaves your device.” That statement applies to default local learning; optional features create separate data flows.
If you sign in with a Microsoft Account and enable Backup & Sync, Microsoft says your personal language-model data is stored on its servers and synchronized across devices where you have opted in. This can preserve learned language data after an app update or reinstall, or when you replace a device, but it also means that data is stored in the cloud. Microsoft’s current account guidance says SwiftKey Accounts have been retired in favor of Microsoft Account sign-in for backup and sync, with OneDrive storage. Microsoft’s privacy and data FAQ, Backup & Sync instructions, and its account guidance explain these distinctions.
Which information might be sent to Microsoft?
Product-improvement sharing
Microsoft describes product-improvement sharing as a separate, optional choice—not the same thing as backing up your language model. Its FAQ says sharing may include occasional snippets of typed phrases and keypress behavior, such as whether words were deleted or changed. For signed-in users, it also describes fragments about words and how likely they are to occur together. Microsoft says these fragments are anonymized and that personal or unusual words are removed. Those are Microsoft’s descriptions of its process, not independently verified guarantees. The company says you can change the choice in Privacy settings under “Help Microsoft to improve.” See Microsoft’s typing-data sharing FAQ.

Usage and crash information
Separately, Microsoft says SwiftKey may periodically send anonymous usage statistics, such as character totals and keystrokes saved, and that crash information may be sent to Microsoft and Google. These are distinct from both language-model backup and product-improvement snippets. Microsoft summarizes these categories in its data-collection and transmission guidance.
Does SwiftKey learn passwords or credit-card numbers?
Microsoft says SwiftKey does not learn from fields correctly designated as password fields and does not remember long numbers such as credit-card numbers. The protection depends on the app or website correctly marking a field as sensitive; Microsoft notes that this classification can fail, or change if a “show password” option is used. A password typed into a message or email is ordinary text to the keyboard, not a protected password-field entry. Text entered in other contexts may also have been learned already.

If SwiftKey suggests a password or other sensitive word, Microsoft advises deleting the learned word and reviewing where it may have been typed. Its privacy FAQ describes both the protection and its limits; it does not establish that password capture is impossible.

How privacy controls differ on Android and iOS
Android Incognito mode
On Android, Microsoft documents an Incognito mode that stops SwiftKey from learning while it is enabled. It can be switched on from the keyboard toolbar, and Microsoft says the keyboard may also activate it automatically when it detects a private browser session or a field marked private or sensitive. Incognito is a learning control; Microsoft’s documentation does not say it stops every keyboard or device data flow. Microsoft says the feature is not currently supported on iOS. See the Incognito mode explanation.

iOS Full Access
On iOS, Full Access allows the keyboard extension to communicate with its host app and gives it network access. Microsoft says it uses that permission for language models, personalized learning, preferences, themes, and related app components. The company also says granting Full Access does not itself transmit everything you type, and that words typed are not transferred unless you create a SwiftKey account. Because the permission technically enables network access, it is a meaningful choice; the explanation of what SwiftKey does with that access is Microsoft’s own account, not independent verification. Details are in Microsoft’s iOS Full Access guidance.
Optional features that create separate data flows
Clipboard sync with Windows
Microsoft documents Cloud Clipboard as an Android feature for syncing clipboard content with Windows. It requires a Microsoft Account and a supported Windows PC; Microsoft says clips are transmitted securely and are not permanently stored or processed on its servers. The company says clipboard syncing is unavailable on iOS. Because copied text can be sensitive, enable the feature only if you need it. See Microsoft’s clipboard-sync instructions.

Voice, camera, and other Android permissions
Microsoft’s Android permissions guide associates microphone access with voice typing and camera access with camera-dependent features. It also describes internet or network access for optional cloud services, themes, and error reports, alongside permissions connected to vibration, notifications, startup, and device behavior. Review the permissions actually granted on your phone and consider which features you use. Permission descriptions may vary across operating-system and app versions; consult Microsoft’s Android permissions page for its explanations.
How to review settings and delete SwiftKey data
Menu names and paths can change between versions, so check the current SwiftKey app’s Account and Privacy settings rather than relying on an old screenshot. Microsoft documents an in-app data portal for account preferences and personal data, and guidance for deleting a cloud backup and removing a local language model. Use the appropriate deletion control for the data you want removed: deleting local learned data is different from deleting a cloud backup. Microsoft’s Data Portal guidance and privacy FAQ cover those controls.

Who should use SwiftKey?
Whether SwiftKey is an acceptable choice depends on your platform, account settings, and tolerance for optional data sharing—not on a single blanket privacy label.
- For local personalization: leave Backup & Sync off if you do not want your language model stored in Microsoft’s cloud.
- For product-improvement sharing: review “Help Microsoft to improve” in Privacy settings and leave it disabled if you do not want to opt in to the described typing-data sharing.
- For private typing on Android: use Incognito when you want learning paused, while recognizing that it is not a general network or device privacy mode.
- For iOS: decide whether the functionality Microsoft associates with Full Access is worth granting a keyboard extension network access.
- For clipboard or voice features: enable only the optional capabilities you need, and review the associated permissions on your device.
Microsoft’s documents explain product behavior and available controls, but they are not an independent audit. If your standard is independently verified privacy or a guarantee that no sensitive text can ever be exposed, these documents alone cannot establish that standard.
