No—Minecraft is not confirmed to be becoming an Xbox console exclusive. A report from Windows Central describes a survey shown to Xbox users who own multiple consoles. The survey asks how they would react if nearly every Xbox-developed franchise, including Minecraft, stopped receiving new PlayStation and Nintendo releases. It is a hypothetical market-research scenario, not an announced policy.
What Microsoft’s reported survey asks
The reproduced final question presents this scenario: “Imagine it was announced that all future title releases from every XBOX-developed gaming franchise except Call of Duty will be console-exclusive to XBOX.”

“For Minecraft only, existing titles would no longer be available for purchase on PlayStation or Nintendo consoles, and would not receive any new content updates. However, there is no impact to any of the existing titles or content you already own. Nothing changes on PC in this announcement.”
According to the report, respondents are asked whether they would move to an Xbox console they already own, buy an Xbox, switch to PC or skip the affected games. The survey also tests reactions to individual franchises, including Fallout, The Elder Scrolls, DOOM, PHYSINT, Diablo and Minecraft.

What the Minecraft scenario would mean if it ever happened
Existing owners could keep playing
The wording protects Minecraft titles and content already owned on PlayStation or Nintendo consoles. It does not describe a forced removal, a shutdown of online access or a requirement to repurchase an owned copy.
New purchases and updates would stop on PlayStation and Nintendo
Under the hypothetical, existing Minecraft products would disappear from sale on those consoles and would receive no new content updates there. That is materially different from making the game immediately unplayable: an owner could retain access to the version and content already purchased, but would be cut off from future releases and updates on that platform.

PC would be unchanged
The reproduced question explicitly says there would be no impact on PC. The scenario therefore distinguishes console availability from the broader Minecraft ecosystem rather than proposing a universal Xbox hardware lockout.
Is Microsoft testing Xbox exclusives again?
The survey is evidence that Microsoft is studying player reactions to a more aggressive exclusivity strategy. It is not evidence that the strategy has been approved. The available report does not publish the survey’s sample size, field dates, respondent geography or weighting, so it cannot show how widely players support the proposal or predict sales.

The timing reflects a real strategic tension. In an April 2026 strategy post, Xbox said it reaches more than 500 million players worldwide and described a platform spanning console, PC, mobile and cloud. The post listed hardware and accessories as priorities, identified Minecraft among its creator-focused platforms and said the company would reevaluate exclusivity and release-window decisions.
That position sits alongside earlier leadership comments. On an official Xbox podcast, Phil Spencer said exclusive games tied to one piece of hardware would become a smaller part of the industry over the next five or ten years. Matt Booty said first-party games would be on Xbox and day one in Game Pass while the company continued considering how to bring more games to more players. The same discussion treated Minecraft and Call of Duty as community-driven franchises whose value depends on where players and their friends are.

Why an Xbox-only strategy would be a difficult trade-off
The survey appears designed to measure whether the hardware benefits of exclusivity outweigh the costs of shrinking established communities. The main decision factors are:
| Question | Potential benefit of exclusivity | Potential cost or risk |
|---|---|---|
| Player reach | More people may choose Xbox hardware to access major franchises. | Removing PlayStation and Nintendo releases reduces the addressable audience for each game. |
| Hardware switching | A highly valued game could persuade a player to use an existing Xbox or buy one. | Players may switch to PC or skip the game instead of purchasing a console. |
| Updates and engagement | Xbox can concentrate future content and services on its own platforms. | Stopping updates on another console can frustrate owners and split communities. |
| Game Pass | Exclusive releases could make Xbox and Game Pass more compelling. | Games built around large, active communities may lose engagement when access narrows. |
| Cross-play and cross-save | A tighter platform strategy may simplify some first-party priorities. | Fragmented player bases can weaken cross-platform play, progression and friend networks. |
Those are strategic possibilities, not forecasts. The survey does not disclose the conversion rate Microsoft would need, or whether respondents’ stated intentions would become purchases.

What players should do now
PlayStation and Nintendo owners do not need to buy an Xbox based on this survey. Continue using the version you own and watch for an official Microsoft or Xbox announcement before making a hardware decision. If a policy were announced, the practical questions would be whether your edition remains supported, which updates are affected, whether cross-play and cross-save continue, and whether PC access meets your needs.

What to watch next
The most meaningful confirmation would be a dated Xbox announcement specifying affected editions, platforms, update support, online services, cross-play, cross-save and the treatment of previously purchased content. Until those details appear, the reported questionnaire should be read as a test of player sentiment—not a roadmap.
